As we travelled southwards from Scotland, this site was conveniently located for a short stop off and was a wonderful surprise, on a bank holiday weekend as well, as although full with plenty of coming and going during the three days we stayed, the site was very peaceful and the view of the sea and shipping beyond the lighthouse, spellbinding. Many hours seemed to pass with us just watching the sea and sky change moods and colours.
The WC block whilst compact was kept spotless and was more than adequate at peak use times whilst the general site condition, during such a busy spell was excellent and reflected the hard work, care and attention the friendly wardens put into the site.
As noted elsewhere, beware that the site has a steep slope that affords views to sea from almost all pitches but definitely requires levellers for those of us motorhomes, if the eggs are not to run into the downside of the frying pan each morning.
There is not much spare site once everyone is parked up and those pitches at the bottom of the site are more level and have a brilliant grandstand view of the sea but a public footpath is immediately on the other side of the site chain link fence, so when you look out, others maybe looking in.
T'was so good, we have already booked a longer return next year and hope to spend time discovering nearby Whitley Bay and Tynemouth. Will also share one of the enormous portions of Fish and Chips from The Harbour View next time though.....be warned - they do serve huge portions of fish !

This is our second visit to Old Hartley. This is one of our favourite sites given the amazing views and great bus service within walking distance of the site. We also strongly recommend a visit to the pub close to the site, the food is excellent . The standard of cleanliness of the facilities is a testimony of the work performed by the wardens . During our visit we had a visit by bus to Newcastle and drove to the Belsay Hall and Gardens. We will most certainly visit again
Fabulous views.
When travelling north, we always try to have a few days here. It is a beautifully kept site with a a small but immaculate shower is nearer to Seaton Sluice than Whitley Bay.
However, the main attraction for us is the beautiful view of St. Mary's Island with its stunning lighthouse. The scene changes with the tides but never fails to lift the spirits.

Warning ⚠️
Magical views, fantastic coastal walks that goes on for miles, clean facility's,lots of pubs serving food, our weather was amazing even the thunder and lightning storm, but folks be aware this is a site on a very steep slope, getting your caravan level takes time, bricks, wooden boards, and a wheel wedge and if you don't have a step with 2 steps on it then your in trouble.
Weather and walks made this site great 😀
Like war and the cinema!
Like war and the cinema, the best places at Old Hartley are high up and at the back.
This is because the only waste water emptying point is at the top of the hill!
Other than that this is an excellent site, especially as it’s a no-awnings site, Pity there aren’t more of them.

Must visit
Really enjoyed our visit to Old Hartley. Met by a lovely friendly warden who gave us the choice of several pitches, some were on quite a slope but we found a beaut with lovely sea views.
Site is a wee bit tired but I can forgive that as it’s in such a lovely position on top of the cliffs with amazing views of St Mary’s lighthouse and out to sea. Will definitely return
Desperately needing a upgrade to the site
When this site is full which is often, its very undulating ground and small pitches can be very tricky to access which totally spoils what could be a beautiful site with great views.
There needs to be a circular road to allow better manoeuvrability around the steep site.
We left early due to the site being overcrowded with little room between vans making it noisy and tricky to depart due to the poor terrain.
In conclusion it either needs a revamp or removal of at least a quarter of it’s pitches.
First Stay
We have just returned from our first visit to this site, fantastic views from all pitches, great location for walking or touring, frequent bus service nearby.
The site is managed perfectly by the on shift wardens, they all worked extremely hard on The Royal Wedding day celebrations, it was a great atmosphere, (the cream scones where delicious)
thanks for making our stay perfect.

A lovely site .
Had my first visit here last week, what a lovely site, perfect location, yes you do need levelling blocks, but that’s clearly stated in the site description, lovely friendly welcome off the wardens, toilets and showers up to the usual high standard, spotlessly clean, a pleasant walk to St Mary’s island, and then onto Whitley Bay, canny pub just on the doorstep, and a few local shops nearby, it was my first visit, but it won’t be my last,
The hi and the lows
First of all a big thanks to the wardens who must have had the worst week ever of running a site, from 2 consecutive nights of power cuts to only half the site to late comers arriving on site at 2230 for the warden to get his tractor out and site them they deserve medals so big thanks.
Now what a site compact and bijoux to say the least but the views stunning the walking fantastic and a pub within 100 yards now what a bonus coop store for all the goodies you forgot to pack also a daily paper. Will I return you bet cheers
