great views but needs an upgrade

Ive just come back from old Hartley and i must say i had a lovely weekend but unfortunately i do feel this site needs an upgrade so many things are needing attention the pitches need attention very uneven The road through the site needs tarmac the road itself needs extending through the site towards the far side of the pitches not stopping after just going half way down the hill When it rains its too boggy to reverse off the pitch so extend the pitches .....if there was a proper road this would help Toilet block needs stripping and painting Chemical waste room needs sorting as very very smelly Need another water and chemical waste point at the bottom of the hill where the bins are all in all an total overhaul of the whole site to make it more user friendly as such a pretty spot its a shame at present needs attention as this is one of my favourite sites

Beautiful, but steeply sloped!

A lovely location, with stunning sea views BUT many of the pitches are unusable for motor-homes as they are steeply sloped - My van is only 5.99m long, but the first pitch I tried, my levelling system told me I needed 330mm of adjustment to get my motor home level - that's a ramp 13" tall! I chose a different spot which was better, but still needed the full height of my LevelUp Jumbo ramps to stop me rolling out of bed. The motor-home service point is also sloped, so don't make the mistake I did and allow your Thetford cassette cap to roll away and fall into the drain. The pitches themselves are gravelled, however they are not connected to the roadway, so visitors may find it difficult to manoeuvre on and off over the grass if it is wet.We arrived at about 6:48, but the site staff had left and left us a key in an envelope, so we didn't get to interact with them, I'm sure they're nice though, most are!

Happy at Old Hartley

We had a lovely time on this small site with sea views. The walks are great in all directions, we visited St Mary's Lighthouse and Seaton Sluice on foot, both worth seeing. Handy Co-op a few minutes walk away for a food shop and NT Seaton Delaval Hall walkable too. Had a family meal out in the larger Spanish City restaurant in Whitley Bay, catch of the day listed by boat, it's very popular so worth booking. Slight hiccup when leaving as a foreign rental motorhome was attempting to fill their water tank with a watering can at the MHSP which held everyone up. We gave up and then found the next site at CAMC Cayton had no working MSHP!

East Coast trip - Early October 2018

What a fabulous site! We stayed 4 days and it could have been so much longer. The views are fantastic and the walks available equally so. We saw seals basking on the rocks by the lighthouse, had a day in Durham and another over at Vindolander and all with the beauty of watching the birdlife and the ships coming into the Tyne. The site is well kept, the wardens helpful - what more could you want.

Another fantastic stay at Old Hartley

Just spent another three night stay at this fabulous site. The Wardens are really friendly and helpful and the site has probably the best views of any site. It was very very windy when we stayed but we thoroughly enjoyed the stay as the site offers plenty of cliff top walks, beaches and a good walk over to the Lighthouse. Our dog enjoyed the beach! The facilities are exactly as you would expect from a CAMC site - the only thing is TV reception is not good and it would be a finishing touch to provide TV aerial points on the electric bollards which the CC has on many other sites. Highly recommend this site - we have stayed several times before and will do so again.

Well worth a visit

Yes, all that you have read in reviews is true. The location is fabulous, the views are amazing and the wardens are probably the friendliest we have encountered. The pitches are too small for many motorhomes. We were fortunate to get a pitch at the top of the site that did not involve driving over grass and all four wheels were on hard standing, but ours was the only pitch that could offer that luxury. An upgrade to pitches and facilities would be very welcome. The site offers great opportunities for walkers and cyclists. For the less active a Coastliner day ticket offers unlimited travel on a couple of local bus routes for under £4 (free for those of you lucky enough to have a bus pass of course). So you can visit Blyth, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Newcastle without having to move the Motorhome or pay parking fees. Well worth a visit. Enjoy!

In need of some TLC

I agree with the reviewer who commented on the poor pitches. Improved access would resolve pitching problems. The toilet facilities are in need of repair / maintenance / upgrading. Site location is very good with great views, easy access to walks and close to shops. Whitley Bay and Blyth within easy reach and worth a visit. Aircraft noise was annoying and not mentioned anywhere so be prepared for an early morning wake up call! Although all Club prices are increasing and on the high side, the price at this site seems excessive for the facilities when compared to commercial sites of equivalent standard.

Great as always, but additional parking charges this time

As ever the stay here is excellent. Yes, the hard standings are small and the gravel means caravans tend to bog down a bit and need two people to align properly, but the views are unbelievable and the facilities are great. Excellent pubs nearby, recommending The Kings Arms at Seaton Sluice and the Deleval Arms right outside the site (cash only). Don't bother with The Waterford Arms. What has annoyed me is that I was charged £2 a night for a second car. My tow car and 5.1m caravan and the additional Mini fitted on to the pitch without any issue and was only 1m longer in total than the huge tandem axle rig next door, but the Club insists on charging for the privilege of an extra car.

Missing an Opportunity?

I am sure there are many members that will hate me saying this but Old Hartley needs serious attention in my view. The site has a lot going for it in terms of location and stunning views from each pitch and is rightly popular with members. Whilst the pitches are all hardstanding those hardstandings are quite small. Maybe OK for caravans but not so good for larger motohomes as you have to overhang the grass at each end. The fact that you also have to drive over grass to get on and off a pitch, often uphill could be interesting in wet weather. In my view the site needs a serious redesign to provide better access and proper sized pitches. If the Club need an example of how this might be done I would suggest having a look at Waverley Park on the IOW at East Cowes where the topography of the site is similar. Having said all that it is a wonderful location with easy access to public transport into Whitley Bay and Newcastle in one direction and Blyth in the other. A must is a visit to the newly restored Spanish City at Whitley Bay. For those that knew the original in their younger days it is now very different inside I am assured! Lots of walks and cycle rides direct from the site. I would like to thank the wardens for helping when I had to have a spare part for my motorhome delivered to the site, it certainly lessened the stress.
