We’ve just returned from 4 nights at New England. We arrived around 1.45, after a missed turn, and were happy to be told there were free pitches in every area so could choose our pitch anywhere. Pitches 1-10 had been recommended so we headed there first. Pitch 2 was free and had a great sea view so we parked up. We had no van in front of us all week, possibly because the pitch in front is non electric, so a great choice and probably the best view we’ve had. After setting up we went for a walk along the beach but were so disappointed. It was nothing like the picture on the CAMC’s webpage. There is a small amount of sandy beach but the majority is rocky in both directions. Over the week we did walk both directions and whilst walkable it is hard going. The Mull of Galloway trail at the end of the site was very overgrown so also difficult. Despite this disappointment we found some great walks in the area. There are lots of suggestions in the information room but some were empty wallets where the last one had been taken.
The walk to Port Logan is very easy, along a quiet lane and only took 40 minutes. If you cut through the top car park just outside the site there is a path to the main road and the lane is directly opposite. This saves having to walk on the main road. What a difference this bay is compared to New England Bay. We loved this little cove, with its harbour at one side and fish pond at the other. If you walk past both of these there are some beautiful little coves at either end.
The following day we drove 10 minutes to Drummore and again enjoyed this little village. There is a lovely path from the top of Drummore down to the bay. 10 minutes drive further is the fabulous Mull of Galloway lighthouse. The panoramic views are breathtaking. The Mull of Galloway trail starts here and we wandered along the coastal path to the next bay. We had lunch at the coffee shop at the lighthouse and the scones were so delicious we had to buy another to take home.
The next day we drove to Sandhead, which had the beach we were expecting at New England. From there we drove on to Stranraer and Loch Ryan was much nicer than we were expecting, with a great path to walk along the water’s edge as the tide was in. We had lunch at a chip shop in the town centre but wished we had waited until we reached Portpatrick. This is a lovely harbour town, which was the only busy place we had encountered. The South Upland Way takes you onto the cliff tops where there are spectacular views. Another place where we could have walked further, had we had the time.
The site facilities were as expected but the showers were a little small with no shelf. Having 2 blocks was useful as we always knew one was open, particularly on departure day. We enjoyed playing table tennis in the playroom each day and would like to see more of these on club sites.
Wonderful location
Had an overnight stay here on our road trip. Lovely welcome from the staff. Had a wonderful pitch with easy access to the beach. The facilities are spotless. The Mull of Galloway is stunning and well worth a drive. We will definitely be back. A wonderful site.

Fantastic Site
Stayed here June 22 for 10 nights. Lovely site right next to the beach. Good choice of pitches with lots of room between them. Wardens were really helpful. The facilities were good and kept spotlessly clean. Visited Portpatrick and had a lovely lunch outside the Harbour House hotel then a walk up to Dunsky Castle. Really lovely countryside with amazing deserted beaches. We will be back
Fabulous site with real character
We stayed here for just one night as part of a 2-week road trip and will definitely return for a longer visit. What a beautiful location! We particularly liked the non-standard layout of the site and the different areas, that all had a different feel to them.
The facilities were okay. They were clean and fit for purpose, but could do with updating, and at the time of our visit, one of them had run out of gas, so we were advised not to use it. The laundry room was great - plenty of room for me in my wheelchair and my assistance dog to help me. The accessible shower room was okay, though a couple of other campers seemed to use it as a smoking room and afterwards, it stank of cigarettes!
The beach is lovely, with stunning views over the bay. With my off-road wheelchair, there were a couple of paths wide enough for me to get onto the beach. The top half is pebble, which was difficult to travel over but it was nice to just sit and look at the sea. If they ever wanted to put in a wheelchair access ramp though, that would make it amazing!
The site staff were very friendly and helpful, with good local knowledge. Looking forward to planning a longer holiday in New England Bay.
Quiet Site with Great Beach
The site is in a great location with a nice beach - a mix of pebbles and sand. Despite the site being busy, the beach was very quiet. For the two days we were there, there were only ever a handful of people on the beach when we visited.
As newbies, we opted for a pitch with proximity to the sea and definitely felt quite buffeted at points. You have to balance being closest to the sea with being more exposed to the elements.
Although we didn't use the toilets or showers, the facilities seemed good and there was a regular cleaning schedule.
There's a small park and a games room for children but we didn't see many children or teens on-site when we were there. It skewed to older clientele and lots of dogs.
Staff were friendly and efficient.
It is quite remote so it's probably best to stock up before you go. The site does have a shop but it's small and expensive. However, you should definitely try their amazing Yorkshire chocolate loaf!
Very peaceful
Stayed here many times now, always very peaceful spotlessly clean and staff are very efficient , friendly and hard working. Great for kids and dogs. A bit exposed at times as you would expect with a costal location no shops pubs within walking distance so make sure you stock up before you go . Would highly recommend a visit.
Wonderful location if you want peace
This is a delightful site for peace and quiet, for walking and cycling - when the weather is kind. We had mostly "Scotland at its best weather" and cycled to Drunmore, for a friendly, simple pub lunch, which although along a main road was less busy and safer than a country lane in the south east of England.
An excellent Site but ……
We recently spent ten days at this excellent Site. The staff are friendly, welcoming and efficient. The facilities, which are perhaps looking a little tired - but perfectly adequate, are maintained very well and in our experience are kept very clean and tidy.
There is a relaxed atmosphere and wonderful sea views and walks along the coast directly from the Site.
I would suggest there is not a lot of interest for those with young families : the beach is generally not sandy and places to visit require a vehicle to reach.
But ….. and I say this as a dog owner, many people staying did not keep their dogs on leads when being exercised or tethered next to the pitch when sitting outside. As a result we and others were pestered by wandering canines when walking our dog or sitting outside or in even in our awning. As I have said this is a friendly, relaxed Site with good staff but perhaps their style of management is a little too hands off.
However, we will certainly return to New England Bay.
Wonderful Location and Site
The location of this site is wonderful, overlooking the bay. The staff were polite and helpful and gave good information about things in the area. The site was clean and tidy but was not very busy when we were there. The facilities block was spotless and the laundry was easy to use once tokens were obtained from the office. The Washing Up area again was spotless and was also partly enclosed. On request we had an electric hook up pitch behind a lot of Gorse bushes which was ideal as it turned extremely windy so we were a little protected. There is not much in the area but it is worth visiting the Mull of Galloway which has a lighthouse and RSPB Reserve, the drive to it has wonderful views. Logan Botanic Garden is not to be missed, Pheasants roam free and Red Squirrels dart about, the Formal Pond has seating and the whole Garden is tranquil and is disabled friendly. The Potting Shed Tea Room is a great place to have lunch or just a cup of tea, they do wonderful scones either plain, fruit or cheese. There is a general store at Drummore which also has a Post Office. The beach at the site is pebbly but Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers roam freely. All in all a great place to just unwind and relax.
Lovely location but exposed
Lovely location, right on the shoreline. Toilet facilities very clean and the whole site very well maintained. Friendly staff.
Apart from Logan Botanic Gardens, there's zero "to do" in the area; 5 miles to Drummore and the single shop, or ten miles to Stranraer, which is a town in decline since the ferry terminal moved.
But it's an exposed spot, and the ground is sandy soil on top of pebbles; effectively an old part of the beach. This means it's really hard to get pegs into the ground, and when they do go in they don't stay, Combined with the exposed site, this means any awnings take a real pounding.
Note that there is very little sand on the beach, its mostly pebble. The beach a few miles away at Port Logan is much better (for dog walking, anyway).
In summary, it's a nice site but the location isn't the best.
