This was stop 5 on our multi-stop tour from Lincolnshire to Scotland (and back) with 6 nights here after a 2 hour drive from Bunree.
The site sprawls along the banks of the river Lochay at the end of the village with snow-topped mountains making a dramatic backdrop. At times they are shrouded in mist creating a magical ever changing scene and in the evenings deer can be seen roaming along the other side of the river.
During our stay we visited the Falls of Dochart Inn which was an absolutely charming place. We tried Shutters Restaurant and the Capercaillie for food with both offering good value. After an evening walk we called at the Coach House across from the site which is a very welcoming pub with real ale and great live entertainment at weekends. Also tried the Courie Inn which had decent beer but seemed to be the place where locals meet up to loudly shout and swear at each other over a drink. OK for a pint but didn't fancy trying to eat in that atmosphere. On the Sunday we had a lovely traditional roast lunch at the Bridge Of Lochay Hotel (recommend by the wardens) which gives 10% discount for club members.
All of the above places that we visited in Killin provide free WiFi for their customers.
Travelling further afield we visited Callander which was a nice place to look around and nearby Aberfoyle which has the Scottish Wool Center with large cafe and a pleasant river outlook. Things to entertain kids here too.
At the far end of the loch is Aberfeldy with a few shops and Kenmore where we enjoyed a picnic on the loch side. Very nice.
A very big thank you to the wardens for their help in extending our stay from the original 2 nights, we had asked several times if we could extend but it wasn't possible. Brent came over to our pitch on our last morning as we were winding the legs up to let us know of a cancellation. Ann made the booking changes and also ammended our arrival date at the next site on our round trip. Along with Ian and Barbara they make a great team who look after this site and it's visitors very well.
Summary: A site which offers a peaceful stay in a pretty riverside location. The large central grass areas make it feel open and spacious. Definitely worth another visit.
Next stop: Berwick Seaview
This is an ideal site to end and extensive tour of the highlands as we did because if you don’t want to drive anymore for a while then you don’t have to everything is within walking distance there is a pub a lovely village with a great Co Op shop that was always open and great walks all around along the river Tay and besides Loch Tay along old railway lines now used as cycle ways and for walking the site is next to the river Tay with Deer roaming on the far bank good dog walking off site but very nearby
Warden was lovely
A site with everything to make a relaxing time, A great welcome, clean and tidy site. on the opposite side of the river deer can be seen, at night owls can be heard from time to time. There is also a dark enough sky to see a myriad of stars when the weather allows! Ben Lawers offers spectacular views.
The village of Killin has a welcome, with cafes, pubs, hotels, a coop, a chemist amongst other facilities. A chip van is parked in the village hall car park. Canoes and bikes can be hired in village.
Travelled from Glasgow only took 1hr 35 which I’d great since we have a 2 year old. Friendly welcome from staff, picked our own pitch. Clean facilities and overall just a lovely well kept site. We’ll be returning on s frequent bases.
We stayed here the weekend before the close for the season so it was quiet on site. It’s a beautiful site right on the riverbank and we enjoyed watching the ducks and the sheep on the other side. We stayed here to break our journey further north. We stayed for two nights but wished we had stayed for longer and will definitely return for longer next year. The wardens were very friendly and helpful and helped us enjoy our holiday even more. The shops of Killin are easily reached with cafes and pub/ hotels along the way. A largish Co op is there for provisions. We went to the pub opposite for food but wouldn’t recommend it. It was mediocre at best and so was the welcome! The site is superbly placed for touring the area. We called into Glen Ogle and walked along the viaduct on the way up to the site. The Autumn colours are stunning. You can also walk here from Killin but we left that for next time. If there was a negative there is no dog walk on the site but there are walks directly outside. Looking forward to returning.
Left the wife at home & went away for a boys week to celebrate our 65th birthdays & retirements for the week 14/10/18 - 20/10/18. My mate Nigel & myself (Marc) arrived to be met by Barbara & Ian who welcomed us & briefed us on the facilities, including showing us to our pitch. We were very impressed upon arrival, with the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff, plus the excellent facilities & this impression stayed with us all week. Beautiful scenery, along with a short 10 minute walk into the village of Killin which has a good co-op general store & various other shops, pubs & resturants. The Coach House opposite the campsite greeted us warmly on our first night & we enjoyed a hearty pub meal there. We ventured further afield using a hire car to take in some distilleries, Gleneagles Hotel, Oban & other attractions which were all within approx. an hour or so. This part of Scotland has some stunning scenery & the Maragowan site is the perfect place to explore from. The autumnal colours surrounding this area are quite spectacular. My wife is very jealous after seeing the photos & hearing of our adventures that we plan to come back together next year.
This is our favourite site. So peaceful and great for fishing. Beautiful walks too. Wardens are lovely. Barbara and Ian so friendly and helpful. We will be back time and time again. Can’t fault this site!
Beautifully kept site in a stunning location. 10 minute walk to centre of lovely Killin with excellent Cooperative, cafes and outdoor hire shop. Do the friendly locals a favour and stock up in their local shops as a thank you for putting up with our vans on the way to the site. I've never seen so many large motorhomes pulling tow cars in the one area. I take my hat off to you - my 7m van is plenty long enough for my blood pressure on these twisty roads! Anyway back to business. This area is fab for walking, hill walking, history buffs, kayakers, fishing, nature lovers. Highly recommend.
We stayed here for 6 nights at the end of August . The site is next to the river Lochay, and has beautiful views of the surrounding hills. If you have a kayak you can launch it from the site and have a leisurely paddle to Loch Tay for a picnic on one of the islands. We also managed to attempt some fishing on site but caught nothing. Not a skill we really possess. There are numerous walks along the Rob Roy Way and towards the Loch which are interesting, and exhausting.
Our welcome was very friendly and professional and the site is well laid out and tidy. Its close to Killin with its numerous pubs and restaurants and Co-op, and the Falls of Dochart.
There is also a fish and chip van near the tennis courts that makes fresh fish and chips to order.Worth a visit.
There is no real bus service so you either have to have transport or just enjoy the immediate amenities, which we did.
Overall a lovely site in a great location.
