Very warm welcome upon arrival and a very comprehensive information sheet. Yes there are potholes on the approach road but no issue avoiding them in our motorhome and I gather there may be measures to sort them out soon anyway. Facilities very clean and in good condition. Site is on many levels with privacy from mature woodlands which was fine for us and added character but may be a struggle for others with any mobility issues.
We did have an issue with the TV booster outlets not working on the pitch we chose (The lakeland Heights pitches) however the antenna on our van worked fine so not an issue (reported to the site staff at the time).
Would stay again.
Note: If using Waze as a GPS then the postcode takes you to an estate in Kendal !!
Beautiful and Relaxing
Really impressed with this site. Staff very friendly. Facilities cleaned regularly. The site caters for adults mainly (which we really liked) very dog friendly, lots of dog walks. 1hr 10mins walk into kendal, 30 mins walk to Sizergh Castle and the Strickland Arms. The site has lots of different little named areas, we stayed on pitch 100 near the Riverside walk. Great pitch. We loved the site that much we have re-booked for next year.
Quiet site in woodland setting
This was our first time at the Club's Kendal site. It is very similar in character to Coniston Park Coppice, hard standings spread amongst a number of seperate areas within the heavily wooded site. It's not the easiest site to find your way around or to select your pitch on arrival, particularly if you have a large unit. Care is also needed on the final approach road to the site as it is narrow and quite heavily potholed. Navigating to the site for the last mile (from the A591) is no problem though, as there are large and very clear Caravan Club signs at key junctions. The wardens are very friendly and helpful and keep the site in good condition. The facilities are clean and well maintained. However, my partner reported that there are no windows in the ladies' facilities in one of the blocks. This meant there was little effective ventilation and everything got damp and steamed up, particularly at busy times. Not a good situation in the current climate (i.e. Covid infection prevention). This is the reason we have scored the 'Facilities and cleanliness' as a 3. Other than this, the facilities were well maintained by the wardens and the score is no reflection on their efforts, as the problem is outside their control.
There are a number of walks from the site and the old gunpowder works and adjacent river add character. Kendal is a couple of miles away and well worth a visit. For serious hill walkers, the Kentmere horseshoe is about a twenty minute drive away. Oxenholme railway station (on the west coast main line) is a fifteen minute drive away (best approached through Kendal I would suggest). Access to Windermere and Ambleside is easy, approximately 6 miles and 8 miles respectively along the A591
The site is not the best if you like sitting in the sunshine, as many pitches see little sun due to the trees (although this is what you would expect on this type of site). There are not a lot of grassed areas either. Take care when parking near some of the trees as they have berries on which 'bleed' and stain your unit (not easy to remove).
Overall, a good site, well looked after by excellent wardens but not one we would come back to other than for access to southern Lakes hill walking.

We had never been to this site before and the previous reviews totally correct when the potholes on the lane were mentioned and additionally the difficulty in finding the vacant pitches (not wanting tricky manoeuvres in a dead end). The site is set in woodland and many pitches under the canopy of trees, our caravan was filthy after a week's stay as an amazing amount of residue was dripped downwards.
The wardens were excellent, the facilities immaculate. The dogs enjoyed the numerous walks from the site. Free range eggs were being sold just over the footbridge and the local farm shop within walking distance was selling very good quality food. The caravan club needs to be alert to competition as there was a small fully serviced caravan site adjacent to the farm shop with easy access straight off the dual carriageway!
Good site, but some issues
We have used this site before for one night stops en-route to and from Scotland. We like the area, so may well use it again for a longer break. But, as the major user, the Club has to do something about the approach lane, either itself, or bring significant pressure to bare upon the local authority. The potholes are of a frequency and depth as to not only risk damage to both motorhomes or caravans entering the site, but they also represent a serious trip hazard for members walking back from the nearby pub, when even by torchlight, they can be missed. The lane has never been brilliant, but it is now downright dangerous. Wardens are excellent, correcting an initial error with pitch allocation, the site being exceptionally busy. Some pitches are not at all level, and very awkward to get onto, even with a mover. Whilst the site is quirky being pitched within an old gunpowder factory, and it is nice to be in the forest, from a quality viewpoint many of the pitches fall significantly short of what you usually get at CAMHC sites, so a bit of a mixed bag. The nearby pub is quite excellent, representing good value, with friendly staff, excellent food and beer, also, I understand it is dog friendly. There is also no escaping it is in a lovely area, with several walks from the site and easy access to the wonders of the Southern Lakes. So, all in all, a bit of a mixed bag.
Not Great
The access road is terrible, littered with very large and deep potholes. Busy site and hard to find unoccupied sites, many of which are not level in either plane ! Simply not good enough. Would have been restful aside from barking/yapping dogs and Wardens blowing leaves around the site, like painting the Fourth Bridge.
Ok site
Roadway full of potholes, difficult to find vacant pitches, only 1 washer and dryer in each toilet block, pitches under trees, very noisy when it rains. Ok for transiting but not for long stay.
Total aside: ban Small VW type campers, no better than tents, we were located between 4 of them, all night long the continuous rumble of sliding doors then bang as they shut followed by the rear tailgate slamming,
Lovely site
We booked one night as first stop from Sussex to Scotland. Great quiet site clean and well run with really friendly helpful warden team. Good dog walks along side of the stream. Well worth a visit.
One of our favourite sites
First time we had been here and it’s definitely one of the best sites we have been to. Beautiful location set in woods with some lovely secluded pitches. Its close to Kendal for supermarkets and petrol and less than half an hour to Windermere , Ambleside etc.The road in does have a lot of potholes but is easy to drive along with passing places.
The wardens were superb ,very friendly and helpful and keep the site immaculate. Plenty of water points around the site. The laundrette was very useful , tokens are bought at reception.TV reception was poor .
Lovely farm shop and cafe a short walk away and a longer walk along the river into Kendal.
Will definitely go again
Bank holiday fun
We booked this site over the bank holiday weekend and it was full so everything was tested to the max.
The wardens where always flying around ready to help and kept a smile on there face even when people where turning up 2 hours early and expecting to be accommodated ! I watched one getting irate and rude to them but he just stayed polite and smiled.
The pitches are set in bays in the woods so it is dark all the time they are also over three levels so if you struggle with your legs I would give this one a miss.
There is a great pub that takes dogs and does nice food 20 mins away and there is a farm shop you can walk down a track to that serves amazing milkshake so give it a try.
We also booked a taxi into Kendal they take dogs so we had a day out there we really enjoyed are stay and I would return but if your a sun worshiper it’s not for you.
