I don't want to criticise this site at all because in truth there isn't that much wrong with it if you like this sort of site. We thought it would be handy as a stop over on the way back from the highlands of Scotland. However the access road is very narrow and the surface very uneven so care needs to be taken driving up the lane. The pitches are in little glades sort of if they had grass on them instead of hardstanding and the site is on different levels with there being some quite steep slopes to drive up and down. You are in the middle of woodland so it can be quite dark. The river running by is really lovely and there are some nice walks.
If you go in school holidays be very careful because children were racing down the hills on their bikes with great gusto and not worrying too much about who was in the way.
For walking it is lovely and handy for Kendal and the other lakes and to be honest it is no better or worse than any other site in the area. After all it isn't called the lake district for nothing and most sites seem to be in trees.
I think many people will love this site, its handiness to many places.
The staff were friendly and kept the site nice and clean but sadly not a site for us.
We have stayed here several times. The site is big but due to the layout being in small pockets you can only ever see a couple of other units and so feels smaller.
Yes, there are lots of trees - it is in woodland! You won't get a satellite tv signal but each pitch has a tv point for freeview.
Staff are nice and friendly and the information room is excellent. Its a 3 mile walk into Kendal on a route that needs sturdy boots but is quite level. We usually walk in and get a taxi back as we have a toddler.
The only thing I would like improved is that the kids play area is for older kids only really.
We used the site as a stop over returning from Devon to NE Scotland. Very well situated just off the M6 for a stop over. The road inside the site does have some tight turns but we managed with a pick up and T/A caravan, so a pretty long rig, just take your time and you'll get round no problem. Warden was very helpful by saving us a pitch that was suitable for a T/A caravan as we ended up arriving late due to traffic on M6. Would certainly consider a longer stay here next time. A 10 minute walk takes you to the Strickland Arms which serves good food.
We have just visited this site and were so disappointed. Do not be misled this site is on quite a substantial slope in places, and has many tight turns to navigate. It is a large site with about 140 plots, and is full of families. If you are looking for peace and quiet this is not a site for you it is very busy with people and caravans in quite close proximity. The toilet/shower blocks are not always close to your caravan and can involve a good walk to and from up steep slopes, not the best if you have to rely on pot washing and showers.
We have a 50' unit and rang in advance to enquire about booking, we were assured that it would be fine. When we arrived it was on the hottest day of the year and they decided to put us at the furthest point away from reception!! Not sure if this is because we own a Hobby caravan. We to navigate the site over tiny bridges and sharp turns with absolutely no room for error, fortunately my partner drives large vehicles for a living and just managed to get us through. We arrived at our site only to fine two other caravans had blocked the access off, leaving us just a 9' gap to get an 8' wide caravan through which had to be reversed into as it was at the top of a cul-de-sac. My partner tried to reverse through but the clutch was burning and smelling as he couldn't get any grip due to the steep slope and the gravel. Went back to reception and they then offered us a plot right at the bottom of the site, next to the river!!!! WHY NOT HAVE GIVEN US THIS AT THE BEGINNING!!!
However by this time it was late evening and I have poor health anyway, but after all the trouble trying to sort out the navigation on site, we decided enough was enough and that it was way to late to try and set up that night, so we asked for a refund. They charged us £60 to literally try to park the caravan and have a drive through the site!!! What a rip off. So disappointed with their attitude especially as they are part of the caravan club. I went into the shop to cancel and was so hot and poorly and had to buy some cold water, they charged me 75p for a bottle of water on top of everything else!! Talk about money driven.
I would not recommend this site to anyone wanting a quiet time its great for families but make sure you check it out before you book. We have learnt a very expensive lesson, that not all site owners are very understanding or bothered about their visitors. Even having rung to let them know we would have a very long unit, they showed no consideration as to our location, and we feel that because of our ringing beforehand that they bear some responsibility to our leaving and as such should not have charged us as much to cancel.
We keep returning to this site as we love the setting in the woodland. The site is spread over a large area and had a different feel to most other sites as you don't feel like you are in a field with lots of other caravans. Instead you are amongst trees in little areas, usually with a handful of other caravans at most and this makes for a very peaceful stay. The facilities are usual CMC standard - spotlessly clean and there are two shower/WC blocks on the site. There are lovely walks; down the river to Kendal or through the woods to the farm shop where we usually get our breakfast and sit outside with our dog (there is an indoor cafe for those without a canine companion). A little bit further on is a great pub serving food: The Strickland Arms which has a beer garden, great on a sunny day. The only downside is that a lot of the pitches on site are shaded by the trees. However we feel that the superb location and beautiful woodland is worth it.
Just a short drive to this site for us, but never been before. A good 6 nights stay, we did have storm Hector whilst there, so plenty of debris about on the roads , caravan and car, but must admit the wardens did a marvellous job clearing up. We were aware the site is in a national trust woodland so we were prepared for not too much sun, plenty of trees, some picthes better than others. The site is a minefield to find your way round , nooks and crannies, so hard choosing a pitch really as it's quite large too. Good wardens and well stocked shop. Good walks from the site by the river. Short walk or drive to Strickland Arms, good food and 10% off for CAMC members. Sure we will visit this site again maybe early spring, late Autumn, when not expecting sunshine and also wanting a short journey.
This is a quiet, secluded site amongst woodland, yet only minutes away from the M6. You wouldn’t know it was there. A very interesting site, with ruins of an old gunpowder factory, with water diverted from nearby River Kent onto water wheels (no longer there). A friendly welcome, and dogs are allowed into Reception. You will need a car to visit local pubs and eateries, and maybe not a site for sunbathers. But we will certainly come again.
What can i say, a warm welcome, absolutely stunning site, peace and quiet and great location. There was a nice little play area that our 4yo daughter loved, she made lots of friends and was exhausted every night.
only slight negative is we are still new to caravanning and haven't yet built up my arsenal of blocks and chocks. due to this we struggled to level the van but thats probably more to do with lack of experience.
Look forward to returning.
