We wanted a site that was close to a town or village and not too big. Dulverton met those needs admirably. Being on the edge of Exmoor provided some nice walks from the site, with plenty more available after a short drive. Dulverton is a nice little town, a few minutes walk from the site, with several eating establishments, a well stocked Co-op supermarket, butcher, greengrocer, bakery (get there early!), and a variety of other shops. The Town Hall has regular markets, acts also as a cinema, and hosts many events. It also has several an interesting churches. We enjoyed the Landrover Safari (mentioned in the site details). The site would probably not suit young children (in fact there were none visible during our stay).
We liked it so much that we extended our booked 7 day stay by a couple of days. This site makes a good base for exploring Exmoor, and would make a good stopover site for those travelling to Cornwall. For large outfits or motorhomes some of the local roads could be challenging, but in May we found the roads to be very quiet.
As usual, the site facilities were of high standard and well maintained.
Mobile phone reception is not good unless you are with Orange (EE).
I'm sure we'll return to this site in the future.
This site has the advantages of easy access to the village and local pubs, superb access to exmoor national park, the woods just over the river barley are dog heaven!
No need to move the car after arrival, everything is in easy walking distance.
If you enjoy river fly fishing and intend to fish more than 2 days it is worth joining the dulverton fishing association.
The site and facilities are immaculate, but it will never be described as picturesque!
Exmoor House is a small quiet site situated in the village of Dulverton. It pays to read the directions in the club handbook or online as the final approach is not obvious.
The site is well kept and maintained by the friendly wardens.
It may be better for caravans than motorhomes as once pitched, some of the routes from Dulverton are perhaps better in a car rather than a larger vehicle.
There are a number of footpaths with routes of varying lengths that can be walked directly from the site so a good location for keen walkers.
The town of Dulverton has a number of shops within easy walking distance, also pubs with good write-ups in the log kept in the Information Room..
There are no children's facilities on this site so perhaps not ideal for those with young children although there is a children's playground about 200 yards away accessed from a footpath by the river.
Lovely little site. Would return again if it was closer to home or where passing the area .Wardens were helpful & friendly. Surrounding area beautiful with lovely views. Quiet roads for cycling & some pretty pubs to stop at. Plenty of local shops for groceries very friendly locals. Tried the fish & chip shop best chips we've had for ages. Dog walkers paradise. Would highly recommend.
We had no problems approaching and accessing the site in our 7 metre plus van and would highly recommend a stay on this site. It was our second visit and we will be returning, towing our car, to explore the wider area. A very pretty & peaceful site with lots of lovely eating places within walking distance. We particularly liked Woods pub at the top of town & The Bridge near the site. It's a great place if you have dogs too, there's an enclosed dog walking area on site & loads of good walks all around, plus nearly all the eating places are dog friendly too. We find this site & Dulverton itself very relaxing & a good place to go, to chill out & recharge our batteries. Can't wait to go again.
Stayed on the site for 5 nights starting 20th April. Site is very tidy and clean with nice facilities. Wardens were very helpful and friendly. 3 min walk from site entrance into Dulverton Centre. Nice views of the forested hills surrounding the village. Good selection of shops in Dulverton including a well stocked Co-op. We used the fish and chip shop on one night - was good quality. We were going to buy fish - however there is no fishmonger but the fresh fish van visits the village Tuesdays and Thursdays. We did the "Julia Bradbury" walk from Lynmouth to Watersmeet along the Easy Lyn River. then up a steep forested hill to the Blue Ball at Countisbury, returning to Lynmouth via the south west coast path with magnificent views. One of the best walks (6 miles) we have done! Exmoor is also recommended for Astronomy as it has a very dark sky without much light pollution at night. Would certainly recommend the site.
Ok for touring vans, but if like us you're in a 7m motorhome it's probably not for you. Nestled in a tiny village its pleasant enough but a bit on the cramped side with not much open space. The village is lovely as is the river and local pubs, cafes etc but it's a bit of a trek up narrow lanes if you want to go to the north coast. Once you have done the village there isn't much else to keep you there in my opinion. If you're in a touring caravan and want a village location then it's ideal as it easy enough travelling the lanes in a car. We booked two nights but probably wouldn't have returned for the second night from Ilfracombe if it hadn't been for us leaving behind our hookup lead. Wardens lovely, facilities well kept but not really for us.
We stayed at this site for a week at Easter. The site is in a lovely setting surrounded by trees and is an excellent base for exploring exmoor. It is only a few minutes walk from the lovely little town of Dulverton with lovely independent shops and places to eat. Lovely farm shop which sold lovely bread and pastries which unfortunately I had to pass every morning when walking the dog and never did resist the temptation to go in. Well stocked co-op as well. Lovely walks for dogs in the woods from the site although quite steep to get to woods but well worth it. The wardens are really friendly and helpful. Nothing was to much trouble and they kept the facilities pristine. The site is very quiet with no facilities for children, although our daughter and son-in-law were there with their four children and loved the site and would return. Worth paying a visit to Withypool which has nice walks along river and a lovely little tearoom with homemade cakes and cream tea. Will definately be returning. One note of caution, the last five miles of the road leading to dulverton is very narrow and there is a funny junction where you can go wrong. We did.
Just got back from a three night stay, being our first visit. A fantastic quiet site and location on the edge of Exmoor. Wardens were extremely friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. Very clean and tidy site in close proximity to the town. Can recommend The Bridge pub for its grub and fine ales, and definitely a site we will return to for a longer stay.
Visited over Easter, again not disappointed, site was spotlessly clean, all the facilities were A1, warm and again spotless. New wardens, lovely people, so helpful, nothing too much trouble, added luxury of ordering your daily paper now available, think the only problem now will be being able to book because it is so popular everyone wants to go there!!
Thank you to both hardworking wardens for a lovely stay.
