Well worth a visit

Nice flat pitches, friendly helpful wardens...what's not to like? Location is great for a stopover or a longer stay, there are miles of dog walks and the views are super. Facilities are basic but very clean. We have stayed on several racecourse sites and this is easily the best.

Super Location

The location of this site is brilliant - so much to do nearby, including Dawlish, Teignmouth and Exeter, with Torbay near too. Lovely wardens and although the facilities are basic, they are clean and do the job well. BUT - the wooden draining boards in the dishwashing area need changing; they certainly look a bit of a health hazard, I wouldn't put anything damp on them ! Come on CC - these need changing to stainless steel !

Handy for Haldon Forest

We often use this site as a stop over when travelling from the the East Midlands to Cornwall, as it is very convenient being situated just off the A38. The facilities are basic but clean and the pitches are nicely spaced to make the most of the open vista across the racecourse. However, the main attraction, if like me you are into mountain biking, is Haldon Forest MTB trails - just 5 minutes ride away with trails suitable for all abilities. There's also some great walks and a nice cafe at the visitor centre.

Good site made better by best wardens!

This is a good easy to access site. In our case near a friend who lives down a lane impossible for a motorvan! The wardens really added value, they are very thoughtful and helpful.

Lovely site

I have used this as a stop over as few times. The site is lovely and situated right in the middle of the racecourse. The wardens were lovely, and always on hand to help. The only downside was the toilet blocks are rather old, but were clean. I will be staying again on the way to devon, maybe new toilet blocks have been built ?, will see.

excellent site

v. good site, stayed for 1 week.  Clean facilities although wet floors were a problem in the disabled facility.  Traffic noise from busy A38 but not noticeable after a while.  Good bus service into Exeter. Lovely walks around the racecourse.

Pleasant surprise!

Site is managed (not owned) by the Caravan Club, yes, facilities are dated but spotlessly clean! We pitched in the paddock so lovely and peaceful. Main area is mostly used by overnighters to/from Cornwall. Staff were extremely helpful. Used the bus service into Exeter and enjoyed the local walks.

Not the best !

We stayed here for one night on our way home to Cornwall. Although only two hours from home we wanted to visit Dawlish and Teignmouth before going back so overnight-ed at Exeter. I am only comparing this site against other Caravan Club sites. In my opinion Club sites are the best in the country, Exeter doesn't reach that high standard but none the less is a good site. The main issue is the ageing toilet block and outside plate washing area. On a late September evening this was rather chilly. The toilet block itself was warm and very clean (normal for the Caravan Club) just a little cramped and no privacy. The pitch we were on was very exposed and the wind whipped around the van with a vengeance. I would stay here again because although a little sub standard it was a lot better than most non Club sites.

Disappointing

Pros:

Very pleasant heathland setting

Good forest walks and bike rides nearby

Toilet/shower facilities kept spotless by wardens

Helpful wardens

Cons:

Although very clean, toilet block needs some serious money spent to enlarge facility and bring it up to date

Very few hardstanding pitches for size of site

Hilltop site is very exposed so catches winds

Long way out of Exeter

Has a transit camp feel, probably because that's how many people use it - just a night on the way to/from deeper Devon or Cornwall

Site sits between A38 and another major road - expect traffic noise (but this is not unbearable)

We were unable to use a CC 'free night' voucher since CC only manages the site, it doesn't own it

Exeter racecourse

A pleasant surprise, although a major road is within walking distance, you hardly notice it, the site is located in amongst some beautiful heathland, we stayed in the 'paddock', surrounded by trees, you feel very alone here, true the toilet block is a bit of a walk and could do with an update, but overall I would be happy staying for a few days instead of one night.
