Excellent Site

A beautiful and quiet corner of Cumbria. A well maintained and managed site. Friendly and extremely helpful wardens, well done to them. Tremendous for dogs, with interesting walks and a 'playpark'.

Beautiful well kept site

Stopped here recently for 2 nights returning from our holiday in Scotland. The site is beautifully situated in the Eden valley. It is extremely well kept. The wardens were very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area and the history of the site. The site is set in mature woodland and is mostly surrounded by trees so a lot of the pitches were in shade a fair amount of the time. Also there seemed to be a number of seasonal pitches in use which reduced the number of available pitches. As mentioned by other reviewers, there is no toilet block on site you need to use your own facilities The site is very peaceful as it is well off the road.

Pleasant stop over

We stayed on this site for one night only during the stormy weather we experienced in July-August our pitch was completely flooded within one hour of arriving due to my wife saying that pitch 7 was her lucky number lol. The reception staff are more than accommodating and said we could move to any other vacant pitch which we did. This is a lovely well kept peaceful site surrounded by countryside and would thoroughly recommend it. Please don’t forget you will need your own loo and shower.

Great weekend in a great camp site.

We stayed here in our motor home on our drive south from a holiday in Scotland. Great camp site on the location of an old stately home, Englethwaite Hall, now demolished. Lots of trees and adjacent woodland. No ablution facilities. The people at reception were wonderfully helpful. Ours was pitch number 60, the sunniest pitch on the camp site we were told (although the weather forecast was not good), it was what reception called a “serviced” pitch which essentially means that it has its own water tap and grey water drain, really designed for caravans but we found it useful to have these connections to our motor home. Went for a walk in the woods once we had sorted our selves out, the entrance to the woods is behind Pitch 9, far side of the site from Pitch 60. Afterwards we sat around under the awning eating and drinking. More rain during the night but, next day, decided to go for a walk up the Eden valley despite the threatening weather. There is a footpath marked on the OS map. We set off at 11:00. Various possibilities but we turned right out of the campsite along the road till we got to Froddle Crook where we turned left and followed a path steep down to the river. This is an official foot path, but much of it is overgrown and thus hard going, often pushing through undergrowth (I was wearing shorts and there were a lot of nettles). At one point we had to crawl under a fallen tree. Not a walk to do with small children, too many prickly things. We intended to walk all the way up to the priory and pub at Wetheral, but progress was slow; after a couple of hours of slow going it became clear that at the current rate it would take a good five hours to get to Wetheral, so we cut it short and “bailed out” at Coathouse Tower and walked back to the camp site by road. This was a nice walk with great views of the river, shame that the path is in such poor condition. Sunshine in afternoon, sat around in the sun reading books. Then at 18:00 decided to walk through the woods to Coathill for a pub dinner in the Greyhound. Takes about 30 minutes. Nice church in the village with unusual bell tower. Great pub serving great pub food, nice beer as well. Played pool when we had finished eating. Walked back through the woods before it got dark. Sunday a cloudy but dry start to the day. Packed up and set off for Carlisle via Wetheral where we had tried to get to the day before. When we got to Wetheral, few minutes drive from the camp site, they were having some king of Apollo moon landing 50th anniversary celebration with a talk by the vicar! We gave the talk a miss and had a interesting walk round the priory instead. Then onto Carlisle, only short drive. First car Park we aimed for in Carlisle would not allow camper vans, so went to another beneath the castle walls; need to put “Devonshire Walk” into the sat nav. Great weekend in a great camp site.

Great as stopover and longer stay if you have a car

I stayed here for one night only and it happened to coincide with the site’s 50th anniversary – to the day evidently. The staff did marvellously with afternoon festivities including a lovely celebration cake, champagne and other drinks, tombola and other games and a bric-a-brac stall as well as some wise words from a lovely lady caravanner from the very early days. A tidy sum of over £660 was raised, presumably for some good cause though I know not what. Really good to see and witness. The site itself is wonderfully rural and very well laid out in a non-regimented way. As per, high trees surround the site so do not expect views. One part of the site is quite open and most of the rest amongst or under trees. On arrival choice of pitch was limited but I took a spot in the open section – much more to my personal taste, but, too late, I came to realise the entrance to the dog walk was behind with the consequence of a regular stream of passing dog walkers - a few of whom thought it was OK to use my pitch as a thoroughfare, but this could happen anywhere (and often does). As a motorhomer, who prefers to stay put once pitched, this is not a site I would stay at for long as it is isolated, with no public transport nearby. Armathwaite station, on the wonderful Settle to Carlisle line, is about 4 miles; I did manage to cycle there, but this was too much of a challenge for me, hill wise, to adopt for a day’s outing to Settle or elsewhere. Afterwards I worked out a longer route with fewer gradients that might work instead. Fitter folk may have no issue with a hilly 4 miles. For those with a car, not concerned about the lack of facilities, which I have come to see more of an advantage than anything, I would see this place as ideal. It is easy to misinterpret the carefully chosen language on the web site description of Engelthwaite Hall and assume that the Settle to Carlisle railway runs close enough to the site to view the trains therefrom. This is not the case at all although the track can be reached in about a third of a mile walk. There is no “bus within one mile icon” on the web site; however, under transport links, it states: “Buses go to Carlisle and Dalston”. Again this is highly misleading; the nearest bus that I could work out was over 2.5 miles away – not that I relied on this as I did my research before I went. The site is beautifully kept, ideal for a stopover due to its proximity to the M6, and really one of the most attractive sites I have visited.

A star of a site

We only stayed booked two nights here as we weren't sure how we'd cope with no facilities block. However we shall be back! The lack of facilities gave us the opportunity to be brave and try out our rather small shower in the van - a success, an adequate ablute was had by all. The dogs loved the extensive dog walk and off lead facilities. A visit to Hadrian's Wall is of course a must but be warned, Vindalanda (run by the Vindalanda Trust)is not dog friendly, apparently due to its being a 'Scheduled Ancient Monument'! Go to Housesteads Fort (National Trust and English Heritage) - the views are superb and dogs are welcome and I do believe that too is a 'scheduled Ancient Monument'.....

Peaceful, welcoming and immaculate site

This is our first visit to Englethwaite Hall and it certainly won’t be our last, we received a very warm welcome from the wardens on arrival, the site is extensive, beautifully maintained and so peaceful, great for walking our dog in the woodlands next to the site. This site doesn’t have a toilet block but that’s really not an issue for us, we knew this when we booked it. All in all one of the best sites we’ve stayed on.
