First Visit

Arrived Sunday 25/2 from Chichester, West Sussex, before heavy snowfall and blizzards from Tuesday and rest of week. Good practical location to get into Durham and visit area eg Beamish museum, which we did. Staff friendly and helpful, particularly given such adverse conditions. Facities immaculate and plenty of hot water. Amazed fresh water at service point worked in temperatures down to about -5. Could hear some traffic on A1 but this was positive as we knew it was open! Guess this might be a little instrusive if relaxing outside, but it is the price for the site being so easily accessible and convenient from the A1. Found yellow marker posts really helpful as they showed the edge of the access road on the site which was covered in an 8inch blanket of snow. Impressed with Park and Ride, £2 return per person. Enjoyed our stay and will return.

Spring visit

We have been here many times before so we know that there is always going to be a certain amount of traffic noise. This time though the weather got in the way with snow blanket. Could not fault staff who tried to keep essential access to services open. Service points totally frozen at various stages Staff did very well.

Snow

We’ve just returned from a great week. Lovely and clean as usual. The site was blocked by snow from Tuesday, the wardens kept everything running as normal. Were helpful when we thought that we may to leave caravan because of snow. You can hear the A1 in the background however this didn’t cause us any problems. The site is so handy for the park and ride into Durham. Looking forward to returning to this lovely site.

Our first motorhome trip

I took my 8 year old son here for our first motorhome trip. The facilities were spotless. The location is ideal for striking out to all sorts of places. We headed for Hadrian's Wall, as he is doing the Romans at school, then we visited Darlington. Being right on the A1 is great for access all over. I suggest readers of reviews of this site ignore the ones giving low marks and complaining about the noise from the A1 - it's not rocket science: site by motorway junction equals a bit of noise, what else did they expect. If you are a light sleeper, take earplugs, but don't bag the site because the convenient location means you can hear some cars. One useful piece of advice I read in a review, which I will repeat, was to position yourself in the right hand lane as you exit the roundabout off the A1, as the turning into the site is only a short distance down the dual carriageway into Durham

Very noisey

Its a shame really because the site itself is lovely and tidy. Sadly let down by the traffic noise which is none stop. Earplugs essential.

Durham based

For our five day stay during Spring half term, right on the A.1/690 junction, yes some traffic noise but no trouble, then again I take out my hearing aid. Park & ride 1/2 mile, great with a bus pass into Durham. So much in the area, second visit now and still outstanding places to see. Penshaw Monument worth the effort if you're fit, I'm not, but still made it. Excellent cafe at the equestrian centre at the base. Site well managed and kept with friendly and helpful wardens. Lots of National Trust and English Heritage along with private attractions in striking distance, as is the Durham coastline. Certainly an area to re-visit with Durham Grange as a base.

Ist Outing 2018

Durham Grange always a good start to our year. Site was up to its normal high standard for cleanliness and pitch conditions. Very busy for Ist. weekend of half term as expected. Wardens are a credit to the club, cheerful and efficient. Road noise from A1M is there but not too bad at night. Great site for stopovers and short breaks, we only have a 20 minute drive to site so no driving stress.

Nice site for a stopover.

Nice site for a stopover, but not for longer periods. If you have dogs very difficult too do a decent long walk local to site site, no pavements on local roads, the only path you can use is not worth the cleaning needed when you get back because so muddy. Taxis very expensive considering durham only 3 miles away, park and ride handy though. Easy access to Newcastle from durham also handy, once you get to Durham. The site itself is ok so such a shame.

CLOSE TO DURAM AND NEWCASTLE

We spent four nights on this site. Extremely well kept site by the wardens which is a credit to them all. Very friendly and helpful wardens. Close to Park & Ride into Durham, Close to Newcastle by car. Tesco supermarket close by. DOWN side the site is located next to the extremely noisy A1, We suffered loud traffic noise day and night keeping us awake each night so was happy to return home for a good nights sleep. I do not recommand this site if you are a light sleeper.

Another very good site

A very well maintained site with excellent facilities. Some noise from the A1 but not intrusive. Nice walk down to the River Wear, probably 1.5 hours into Durham. Park and ride for Durham close by although a motorway roundabout to walk over to get there.
