Great place to stay

We have stayed at Durham Grange a number of times to visit our son who was in Durham University. Our final stay was in June 2018. This is a great site located just off the A1. The park and ride is within easy walking distance or there is an excellent local taxi service, Phoenix taxis, who charge about £7 each way into Durham itself. The facilities at this site are spotless and we note that one of the wardens likes looking after the flower bed outside the office which is a credit to her. There is a little road noice from the A1, but nothing that will bother most. Well worth a visit, loads to see and do in Durham.

Stopover only

Second stopover on our way to Holy Island. Excellent stopover, as quite close to the A1. This does give noise, but its NOT excessive. But the site does sit next to a vehicle yard, so early morning there is localised noise as workmen do their thing. We used the advised walk to the Park and Ride to head into Durham..... The walk was easy but great care is needed to cross very busy slip roads....Durham was worth the visit for the town, and Cathedral. As we are a couple of motorhomers, we have no need to think of the family aspect of the site, so please use other revues We would not use this site as anything other than a welcome break on a journey, but it is clean, and well staffed, with for us the only downside the lack of a TV signal in the pitch we had chosen. Three pitches to choose from, but two looked problematic with the high trees and the Strong Wind direction, with the other in a less dangerous position from falling branches, but high trees stopping reception. Again a trip round the one way system to unload grey waste

Super site

This was our first visit here, we arrived and the wardens were fantastic. Really friendly and extremely helpful. The site is a great size and it’s super for the A1. We had our 2 children with us who had a great time. Lots of other friendly kids for them to play with. As usual the facilities spotless and everything you expect from a caravan & motorhome club site. Location is amazing for Durham, Beamish and exploring the coast. Well done all at Durham grange, you are doing a super job. We will definitely return. 😀

Good for Durham and Beamish Museum

We stayed for two nights and its well placed for Park and Ride bus to Durham and Beamish is very easily accessible , which is what we wanted from the site. The Beamish Museum caters well for M H parking. The usual good pitches, clean facilities and friendly wardens.

Lovely site, well worth a visit

A place we will definitely visit again. Friendly wardens, site well maintained, facilities spotless. Also a great location for Beamish and other destinations. Yes you can hear the traffic but it didn’t spoil anything for us and it was perfectly fine to sit outside and relax or read. (Speaking as someone who can easily get upset at excessive noise I don’t say this lightly!) I think some reviews are a bit harsh in this respect, which I feel is unfair when all other aspects of the site are to such a high standard.

Never ending noise

The wardens were very nice. The toilets and shower immaculate. The grass and pitches kept to a high standard. Easy to visit Durham and Beamish. BUT the traffic noise is horrendous. This site is within a couple of hundred metres of the A1 and A690. The traffic noise is 24/7 from these major roads. We had great hot and sunny weather during our stay but it wasn't relaxing to sit outside the caravan due to the road noise. A great site for anyone travelling north or south as an overnight stop. A great site to visit Durham or Beamish. BUT not a site where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet sitting in the sun outside the van. It's just too close to the A1. Go knowing this and it's ok. Go for peace and quiet and disappointment awaits.

Great location

I stopped here for two nights on my way back down south. Fantastic location just off the A1 although you do have to endure some road noise to balance out that convenience, but I pitched on the far side (away from the A1) and barely noticed it. Perfect for visiting Durham and the Beamish museum and local supermarkets only a ten minute drive away. Wardens, site cleanliness and facilities up to the usual high standards of the Club sites so it didn't disappoint. Will happily return.

Perfect site for Visiting Durham and Surrounding Area

We had three nights here to visit Durham and Beamish on our way home in the south from Scotland. We couldn't fault the site: very helpful wardens, immaculate toilet block and well-kept pitches. So handy for Durham with the park-and-ride very close (walkable, but we took our motorhome to avoid having to cross the dual-carriageway (free to 'oldies' like us!). Also handy for Beamish (highly recommended) and other local attractions. We didn't realise there was a 'noise problem' until we read other reviews - we didn't even notice it! don't let this put you off a great site.

Great wardens, nice site but the noise....

How this site gets such high star ratings is an obvious collation issue, the wardens are great, it's a nice site in quite a traditional way (big circle with a tenting area in the middle), it's great for getting into to Durham and as a North/South stopover, but the noise really is the worst in 30+ years I've ever come across. Yes it's no surprise as you have 8 lanes of traffic thundering past on 3 sides, the A1M issue is no surprise but you also have the main Sunderland to Durham dual carriageway next to the site as well. This means a steady drone which you might just lose after a bit doesn't happen and in any event the traffic level is not constant on either road and certainly never quiet for long. You also have a Highways England main depot as a neighbour but the road sounds actually drown out the gritters etc coming and going. Ear plugs are a requirement for a nights sleep which if you can live with them does work. The other issue has to be pollution, that many diesels etc is not going to be good for your health. It's no good saying oh well you know the road is there what can anybody do? Really you want to know just how loud it is before you think of staying. The tent area in the middle was not in use, though how you could possibly get a nights sleep in a tent is a moot point, I also would be wary of having tents and vans is such close proximity. On the positive side, it's a nice site in and of itself with good modern facilities, the wardens are lovely and you are just short drive from Durham - it's cheaper to park in town than use the park and ride if there are two of you. Armed with ear plugs it's a handy North/South stopover which I think is what most people use it for. I could not recommend it for sitting around having a BBQ and a nice chat. Of course if you are deaf, can turn off your hearing aid and not bothered by pollution risks you'll be fine.

left early

Unfortunately due to the beast from the east arriving we had to leave a day Early. we were given a very warm welcome and because the wardens had been given inside information that we were new to motor homing we where given some great advice with regards to best ways to pitch with predicted weather coming in. the facilities are excellent and the Wardens were excellent we will definitely be back soon
