We usually visit CLs so when my wife booked Crossways I wasn`t looking forward to it..
Hang on though, this site isn`t laid out like a normal club site. If you think of Crossways as a collection of CLs grouped together then hopefully you`ll get the idea.
Access is good and the staff were excellent in this Covid transitional period. Showers were locked but the toilets were open and were clean. The wrist-band entry process for toilet entry is a bit hit and miss....my son waited outside a toilet that was supposed to be occupied (two wrist bands hanging up) for ages until another `vanner came to collect his wristband having forgotten to remove it after his visit had finished...
All in all I really enjoyed our visit to Crossways, and I`d go again.
Excellent spot
After what seemed an indeterminable winter and period of lockdown we headed for Crossways on the first day restrictions were lifted. Staff were very helpful and given so many people also wanted to visit on the same day they managed the sudden rush of arrivals professionally and without fuss.
There are lots of quiet little glades to pitch in and where we stayed all we heard was the occasional train horn. (Take a torch as the site is pitch black at night) We used the nearby station to visit first Weymouth then Dorchester and had a great day out, lots to do and see. One tip, if you want to visit the nearby grave of TE Lawrence, (Lawrence of Arabia) and the Walled Garden at Moreton either on foot or by bike, turn left out of the site and then take the next left into Redbridge road. This is a very lightly trafficked route. After a mile or so cross the railway bridge and follow your nose, down through the woods across the valley and bear right by the equestrian centre. From there its a short distance to St Nicholas church and the garden. (The grave is actually in a small separate cemetery next to the walled garden). If you want to drive there is a free car park on the corner before the church that that will accommodate motor homes as well as cars. Would definitely use this site again.
Fabulous friendly site where staff go above and beyond.
We had a 6 night stay at this site over the October Half term. We found the site staff so welcoming from the start. They were battling against heavy rains which had resulted in the closure of certain pitches but there was plenty of advice on where best to pitch and regular checks to make sure everyone was Ok, with flexibility on where to park to ensure you weren’t in the mud. During the week we visited Wareham Forest and managed to lose our dog which was very traumatic. However the wardens couldn’t have been more helpful printing posters off for us and putting them in plastic wallets because of the weather, as well as delivering them to our caravan. All this well after the time they should have been “open” for assistance. We can’t thank them enough. The posters and help of the local community (equally fabulous) meant we got our boy back the next day. We love this area and the site itself is charming. We spotted several deer and the kids loved playing in the wooded areas. Don’t be put off by the compost toilets. The cleanest, freshest smelling facilities we have seen in a long time! We will definitely return.
First visit and now my favourite campsite
I found this campsite by chance whilst looking to stay near the sculpture lakes at Pallington. I booked two nights but could happily have stayed all week. Please don’t be put off by the composting toilets. The cubicles are spacious and spotlessly clean. There is no smell at all. The only difference is that you don’t need to flush (or brush), and there is absolutely no risk from toilet plume. There is a railway crossing close by and yes you do hear the trains and the horn blast as the train approaches the crossing, but it is not intrusive and it did not wake me during the night. The plus side to this is that the station is a leisurely ten minute walk with trains to Weymouth, Dorchester, Wareham and Poole etc. so no need to drive or worry about parking. I did see deer on the site, it wasn’t a problem, and as with any wild animal, you must give them space. There were notices reminding people not to feed them. The pitches are set in small clearings surrounded by woodland and there are plenty of clearings to choose from. This gives the feeling that you are on a very small site with many campers totally hidden from view. The site wardens do a fantastic job here, and you will be assured of a very warm welcome.

Something to consider when visiting this pretty site
This lovely site is prettily laid out with a variety of small areas in a beautiful wooded setting. Over the years we have had many very happy trips here. Not this year. I’m still not sure if I can bring myself to go there again just yet... I love this site and by all means please do give it a go, but after reading the several reviews mentioning the attractive deer roaming on site I feel I should point out my experience: Sadly last year my (adult) daughter and I experienced a traumatic and (honestly) totally unprovoked attack from a doe as we walked closely past her whist chatting to each other unawares. To my shock and stunned disbelief the doe suddenly ran and attacked me, knocking me to the ground. The attack was severe and fairly prolonged before I was rescued, I don’t want to go into detail but I still have a noticeable scar on my back to this day. Really, This is NOT an alarmist deterrent to visit this lovely site. Something like this could happen in many places and I certainly intend to go back to Crossways one day. But amongst all these reviews mentioning deer, It is a warning and reminder that wild animals are just that, and should be admired from a respectful distance. I believe the doe was behaving unnaturally due to duress (the site was very busy and she may have had a fawn nearby). The Club were made aware of the incident and have, I understand, put up signs. They have also since ceased the selling of deer food (really! ) on-site. But please just remember that in all lovely sites close to nature, wild animals are unpredictable, not tame, and admire these pretty deer from a safe, respectful distance.

Very peaceful site
I have to say that this is probably one of the prettiest sites that CAMC have. It is a very unusual site and due to its situation I can understand why there is a dry compost toilet, not to my taste, but nonetheless I understand why. I also understand that they want the windows in the shower blocks open but this does mean that I had to share my shower with an endless supply of daddy long legs, what looked like large mosquitoes and a few spiders. What I don't understand is why shower curtains have to be removed from the shower cubicle (there is also a door on the cubicle though but your stuff does get splashed) and from the privacy cubicles (no doors on these so really unusable). I know the reason will be because of Covid but not sure why. The shower block (one closest to the office) is old and in real need of modernisation/refurbishment just decent quality shower heads would help. These facilities were very disappointing. The other major issue is the lack of lighting on site it really is almost pitch black and difficult to navigate around once dark. On speaking to other people staying there they too raised the issue of poor site lighting and shower facilities and was told the site is only leased and CAMC are reluctant to invest any money in the site. I don't know if true or not but if it is the case then I feel the fees should be adjusted accordingly but more importantly standards should be maintained for members regardless of the status of ownership of the site.
The wardens are very nice, the site is different to other CAMC sites but couldn't help being a little disappointed with some aspects of the site. The train station is very close and the local pub Frampton Arms is great, excellent food and staff.

Lovely Quirky Site
We have just as a lovely few days at Crossways, what a lovely site. Spacious pitches, service points were ideally situated for each area. Facilities clean, staff really friendly, cannot fault the site at all. We will be back. The added bonus of the deer wandering around the site was a great sight.
We visited the Sculptures by the Lake a beautiful sculpture park, it is just a few minutes away.
Delightful stay
We stayed at Crossways for a week immediately after 'lockdown' ended and returned for three nights recently. The layout of the site is great - it's a wooded area and the pitches are arranged in 'clearings' so you never feel surrounded by lots of other vans and motorhomes. We were not far from the railway line and of course, on our first visit, didn't notice it at all because there were very few trains running at the time. It was slightly intrusive early in the morning and late at night when the train crossed the nearby level-crossing and sounded its warning signal! Not a huge problem.
The composting toilets are interesting and not perhaps to everyone's liking, but I have to say, they were scrupulously clean and there is absolutely no smell of any kind. But probably not ideal if you have young children. We have a good shower in our van and didn't make use of the facilities on site, so can't comment there.
The dog walk is very good, the area is beautiful and there are plenty of places to visit. It's an ideal location for walking, cycling and getting to the coast, and seeing the occasional deer grazing on site is a bonus.
Finally, we have to mention the wardens, Graham, Dawn and Chris. They are extremely efficient, friendly and helpful. We had an 'unfortunate incident' with our van just as we were leaving and they could not have been more helpful, practical and understanding. They were very kind, made us a hot drink and checked that all was ok before we departed, so a big thank you to them. I am sure we will return.

Fabulous landscaping, great for dogs
We stayed here for 4 nights, meeting up with friends in their motorhome, We managed to get pitches next to each other and because the site is divided into glades, each area feels quite intimate even when the site is full as it was for 2 of the days we were there. The dog walk is the best I've seen in any of the sites we have stayed at - a decent length with trees and bits to snuffle around in.
The compost toilets were a bit strange but fine. Only negative point was that the showers were rather weak. Will definitely come back
Good location but poor facilities
Lovely location and a pretty site but we were really disappointed by the facilities. The composting toilets are a nice idea but in reality are pretty grim. There is a warning that young children should be supervised when using them which wouldn’t suit some young families, and it also means the door code still needs to be used which isn’t entirely Covid-friendly. The showers are in a separate block and very dated with poor water pressure. We had no mobile signal at all and the WiFi only works on hotspot near reception (slowly), very frustrating that we could only use our annual Caravan Club WiFi connection if we drove to reception and sat in the car (weather was awful, couldn’t sit outside). There are so many signs dotted around the site telling us what we couldn’t do but it would be nice if that was countered by up to date services we could enjoy! Sadly it was also pretty noisy as we discovered too late that we were very close the railway, freight traffic trundles by all night, so it wasn’t the most relaxing of stays. Sorry it is mostly negative but it’s how it was for us.
