Our new favourite site!!

Having just returned home from a midweek break at the Coniston Park Coppice site, Im fairly astounded by some of the poor reviews recently documented here. So much so that for once I will post a review of my own to try and balance the picture painted for the benefit of others. Its worthy of note also that some of the previous negative remarks made during this recent post-lockdown period are actually nothing to do with the site itself, more with the surrounding areas. Thats a shame as it unfairly impacts on the sites overall ratings score. Also I’d say the negative comments regarding restricted facilities and increased safety measures are in the main unjustified in these Covid-19 times, as they are in place to mitigate risk to all of us who are visiting. The site itself is unique in that the pitches are all positioned in separate enclaves within a large extensive wooded area. If your preference is to park up in regimented lines akin to a car park then this site definitely is not for you! For us this was an overwhelming plus point, hence this positive review. A short recce of the site on arrival (this was our first visit) led us to our preferred area, not too far from the entrance at the ’top’ quieter part of the site. A vacant pitch was selected among the trees, which needed no levelling blocks in our case. Its amazing for such a large site that we could only see three other vans from our pitch! No yapping dogs, no loud music, no loud children or speeding vehicles were experienced! The facilities were all well kept and everything functioned well even with all the social distancing measures in place. Not once did we have to queue to use the toilet/shower block. The site itself is a short stroll into Coniston village and an even shorter stroll to the nearest pub. Yes its somewhat hilly, but it is the Lake District after all! Thats what some of us go there for. All in all a great site in our opinion and we already intend booking to return next month. Look forward to it!

First Clubsite visit since Covid

We stayed between 7th and 15th August. It was our first visit to a club site since Covid. Having read the most recent reviews we arrived with some trepidation!!! Don't believe everything you read (certainly not the bad reviews!). The wardens were very friendly. After choosing our pitch we realised that we had probably selected the most sloping pitch on the site! The warden helped with advice and the loan of another couple of blocks as ours were not high enough. The site is perfect for walking and so close to Coniston Water. The weather was lovely, no complaints at all. Covid measures were very acceptable and clearly explained. Everything was clean and well maintained. Yes it would have been nicer to have more facilities available as the site was busy but really what do people expect in the current circumstances? We are lucky to have any facilities!! We had a lovely break and would highly recommend the site. We had been trying to book the site for a couple of years and were so glad that we managed to book before Covid! We didn't try the fish and chip van but we didn't hear a single complaint. We were pleased to note the locks on the lower toilet block particularly in view of 'Glastonbury' on the site adjoining the club site. Hope to return again in the future. Some visitors have mentioned noise. Yes we did hear some at times but clearly it was coming from the adjoining camp site and was not something we would have expected the wardens to deal with!

First time, might return

First time staying here - quite a large site with lots of different sized pitches in amongst the forest. When we arrived we thought what a lovely peaceful site. That is until everyone returned and for 2 nights running there was very loud music and partying playing late into the night - not sure where it was coming from. The 3rd night was like a different site - nice and quiet. We were not given any info about the site or area and wasn't told that you needed a key to access the toilet blocks. There are 3 blocks which all closed for cleaning at different times, but again you have to go round each one to find out the times yourself. There is public footpath to Coniston, however this goes right through the middle of another campsite with hundreds or tents jam packed into fields which can be quite disconcerting. Could be a nice site but feels a bit run down and very busy.

Dangerous cows on the footpath

We booked to stay from Friday 14th August to Wednesday 19th August. Unfortunately we had to urgently return home on Sunday 16th August as our dog was attacked by a cow (from a large group of cows and calves) on the public footpath leading from the site entrance towards the A593 and Coniston. This resulted in our dog and myself being injured. We faced a hefty vets bill for the dog who is still ill, but lucky to be alive and surgery and a two night stay in hospital for myself. I reported this to the wardens and hopefully they will be warning people on the site. As there is only the alternative of walking by Coniston Water or the dangerous A593, this is not ideal. Otherwise this is very a busy site, a lot of the pitches aren’t ideal and are tight for Motorhomes and the whole area was full of Covid campers by the lakeside. Good for bikers and walkers though if you don’t mind the crowds. We won’t be returning here for sure.

Campsite at capacity but less than half the facilities open

The campsite felt very busy, it was full to capacity during our stay. Due to Covid-19 less than half of the facilities were available, apparently to make people social distance, but actually making people crowd and queue to use the loo, wash dishes, shower, etc. The band system makes no sense as people forget to take them so others wait indefinitely for no reason. It felt like we were packed in cheek to jowl and there was no privacy. We've stayed in other sites since Covid-19 and they were operating at 1/3 to 1/2 capacity, so it didn't feel crowded, and it seemed safer. It was a good location in terms of access to Coniston but I think I'd chose a different site when I go back to the Lakes..

Quiet peaceful stay

Our first stay on this site for two nights this week and we will definitely come back. The site is ideally situated for water sports, walking and cycling. Easy access to the lake. Unfortunately we had bad weather which prevented us doing as much as we would have liked! The site was quiet and peaceful and we chose a good pitch. However due to the bad weather some pitches were waterlogged. The Covid arrangements were well thought out and effective. We felt quite safe using the showers and toilet facilities. Friendly helpful staff, many thanks.

Disappointed

I will start by saying that this was not my normal choice of site, we went to stay here to be with my daughter and family, we prefer CLs. I think I echo a lot of other comments about pitch unlevelness, neglect of the site and I found it very claustrophobic under the trees. We were very unfortunate with the weather, it rained every day and we had water running through our awning. Can I add to the other comments that the entrance is poorly signed from the south and you can easily miss it (my daughter did). There is no area in which you can let dogs off the lead, and unless you want to scramble through the wood it was a longish walk from the top pitches to the lake along the site roads which at times were really busy This was not ideal when one of my dogs is petrified of traffic. I think so much could be down to improve this site, such as some proper walks around the woods and the pitches being tided up. In the meantime I will stick to my CLs

Quiet stay at Coniston

We haven't visited the Coniston site for a couple of years and felt welcomed back by staff. We really like the opportunity of looking for our own pitch as this makes it personalised to us. We liked our pitch (180), it was very quiet and surrounded by all the trees. The new wrist band system for the toilets seemed to work ok for us. We cycled to Coniston and around the surrounding area. We had a mixture of sunshine and showers. We won't leave it as long next time before we visit again. Wardens helpful. Many thanks.

Nice site

Great site for walking, cycling, etc. Wardens very helpful. However this site epitomises what I dislike about the club pitch allocation structure. After a 5 hour drive to get there, I had to drive around the site for 20 mins to try and find a pitch, as did other people I kept passing. I pulled onto one pitch, only to be told by someone adjacent, that it was occupied but his sign had blown over. Wardens know which pitches are occupied, each pitch has a numbered fob. Let's start allocating pitches so we can drive in and pitch up straight away.
