Convenient location

My wife and I have been using the site for the last 10 years, to visit our family who live nearby. It is well laid out and there are plently of water etc. points aroung the site. The wardens are always helpful whne I have needed them We have a non awning pitch which is hard standing, i.e. gravel and suits us whatever the weather There are various places to visit locally inc Harfield House for the house and /or the children's play area, It is close to the A1 by the A414 junction sp easy to get to.

Peaceful stay

When I first read the reviews for this site I was very apprehensive. but after staying here for the weekend I had nothing to fear. The site was very peaceful and the wardens were faultless at there duties, the toilets and showers were impeccably clean. I would stay here again within a heart beat. All credit to the wards and a great start for our first club site visit :-)

Serves a purpose but worst site I've been to...

I have stayed at many Caravan Club sites this year and I have to say this has been the worst. Upon arrival I was greeted by a lovely gentlemen so before I go any further I would like to point out this is no reflection of the staff. Went and chose my pitch from what was left of hard standing and i must say some were quite muddy, not what i expect for hard standing but found a decent one in the end. Pitching the caravan there was a strong smell of Cannabis from another pitch which i have NEVER experienced at any other CMC before which leads me to my next issue. There we're so many pitches with contract workers using them as a base, typically they were older caravans, battered and just generally not what you see on a CMC site and that's not being snobby. These workers were leaving at crack of dawn even at the weekend, coming in late, staying up until early hours ( this was someone in the next pitch ) making so much noise i could hear it laid in bed. Generally entirely different experience to any CMC I've been to before and certainly not what i want as a leisure break!

Nice site, but.....

After staying at Commons wood recently and now reading the other reviews, I sort of agree with both sides.. Its a great site in a great location with clean refurbished toilet block, still slightly dated looking and could of been lifted / modernised maybe a bit more, but all the same clean and tidy. As for 'commercial' vehicles, did see a bit of this too.. Also saw people that seemed to be almost residents but that left site and returned the following day... Hence not breaking any 21 day rules I guess.. What I felt was more of a problem was a noisy droning rattling noise coming from an American RV air con unit which was all through the night... Or the quite noisy American pick up that the owner had to drive to the toilet block in at 10-30pm and return just before 11pm.... Or the vehicle that used to leave his caravan at 4-30am every morning.... I can only advise of what I see / experienced... I would return to the site but I would consider where I pitched a bit more next time and hopefully not be bothered by these problems again... I would also say... its not just this site, as it seems to be happening a lot more on 'CL's and Club Sites nowadays.... Which is a shame for us that go away as a leisure break....

Will not be staying again at this site

We have been using this site 4-6 times a year for the last 4 years. We booked in over the Christmas period. The Wardens made no effort to welcome us to the site. We found the lady warden to be almost surly. It was Christmas so you would expect there to be some decorations and lights or an effort made. There was none made. However, the new washrooms were extremely cold - ventilation system was blowing in cold air overpowering the radiators. Each time I used the toilet I had to clean it before use. On the positive side the new showers are a vast improvement. There has been a deterioration in the site over the years - TV points are almost useless. We were so dissatisfied with the site - that we went to the Caravan and Camping Club site in Hertford. Total difference - the wardens were friendly and made an effort in their welcome. The Wardens office was decorated with Christmas decorations. We shall be using this site from now on. I have to say that we are very disappointed with our stay at Commons Wood.

Our 1st ever motorhome overnight: PERFECT!!!

This was perfect! We could not believe how full the site was in November - we then found that many had travelled for Remembrance events in London (which underlines how convenient this location). Our pitch was perfectly quiet, however - this is a VERY tranquil location & we should know: we actually live in Welwyn Garden City! (& know this to be on the very quiet edge of this garden town). The toilet & utility facilities are sooooooo clean (& warm). We really felt at home from home (even if home was not very far!). Many thanks.

A good stay for us

We had a week here for some "enforced relaxation", exploring the vicinity and walking our dog. The site staff were extremely cheery, helpful and efficient. The site was well kept and the amenities block was right up at the top of the Club's standards, having just reopened after a refurbishment and fire damage. The location is very good for getting about, just off the A1, with lots to do and convenient both for local and supermarket shops. There is a good dog walk just outside the site that tracks through woods. The atmosphere is noticeably different to most other Club sites due to the high number of those working from site, with very quiet days. This didn't bother us at all - everyone was friendly when they were present - but might be a factor for some.

Be aware of a couple of things.

We have stayed here twice while en route to sites further afield. As a stop off it’s a great location. On both occasions we noticed several commercial vehicles on site, and from talking to other caravaners it seems that some of the caravaners/ motorhome users are basing themselves here whilst working in the area. (why else would you have sign written Transit sized vehicles with either a motorhome or caravan with different reg plates on?) It seems that a lot of vans are empty on a weekend which further suggest this to be the case. Wasn’t there once a club rule about commercial vehicles only being allowed on site in certain circumstances? Site is very well kept and as you come to expect from the Club. The wardens are excellent.

Good site!

First, I must say that from the moment the toilet block became unusually due to a recent fire, the fact was well publicised on the website. Only an idiot could have missed the publication of the fact that the toilet block was unusable, and there are pitch fees to reflect the fact. So I would ignore the comments of the member who DID manage to miss it. The site is mainly storage with some touring pitches, some of which appear to be long term. It is a lovely little site, tucked away, and useful for London, Leavesden (Harry Potter fans, please note) and nearby National Trust locations. The wardens, as ever, we’re cheerful and helpful. My only critique, and this is true of CC club sites in general is the internet service provision! Caravan And Motorhome Club, seriously, you have to do better...much better. Every single site I’ve visited has had overpriced, and achingly slow connectivity. If you can’t speed up the connection, then at least stop charging us for it!

Suburban site with suburban problems

The site is a typical Caravan and Motorhome Club with all their usual standards, which are always impeccable. The toilet block was out of action due to a fire. I am not sure how the fire started. I should have asked really. It was not a problem that the toilet block was closed, as we were informed about this by the wardens in advance. There are a surprising amount of things to do in the vicinity so whatever your taste for leisure activities you will be able to find plenty to suit your personal tastes. There are some woods which are great for walking dogs right by the site. I did notice some evidence of rough sleeper camps, although one could not see them from the main paths. We arrived for the Spring Bank weekend. Next door to the site is a hospital and a cricket club. On the Sunday there must have been a party on at the cricket club, as there was loud music until late into the evening. It was really loud until 10.30pm and they must have shut some of the doors then, as it was quieter until the party finished at 11pm. Then everyone began to leave rather loudly, as they had all had a skin-full by then. Just before midnight there were fireworks from elsewhere in the town. Whilst the party at the cricket club annoyed me slightly I think if I had had young children with me I would have had stronger feelings. Would I come back again? Probably, as there is a lot to discover here but possibly not a bank holiday weekend.
