Lovely quirky site..

Been several times in the past when it was a private site. Pleased the Club has not changed it too much so far and enjoyed the absence of signs and arrows so familiar on club sites. I pitched in one of the many paddocks and found that people tended to park as they wished, some to left of peg and some to right. One member said it did not matter as long as at list 6 metres from neighbours..quite refreshing for the Club to allow this. Enjoyed the bar facilities and the varying daily visiting mobile takeaways.

Our stay

Very early arrivals being allowed. Bit confusing being given two site maps on arrival and having to check first with the office if a vacant pitch was actually available. Sainsbury in turo has warning signs of height barriers and tesco being near the town was rammed.plenty of space for MH s at Helston Sainsbury 12 miles away on A39. Excellent for regular buses to Falmouth and turo and beyond and safe access to bus stops. Surprised that the cycle route leaflet says it is suitable for children due to on return steep hill on narrow road, no pavement and quite busy when we were there. There is a very very steep hill back from trellisic gardens, my electric bike struggled. The Bisscoe trail becomes rough track from cafe at Bisscoe, more suited for mountain bikes, narrow and rocky. We will return as the site is lovely. Although disliked shower curtains clinging, but liked the bigger combined cubicles with wc. Also beefeater just across the road.

Well didn't expect this..

First visit here and it is quite obvious this is not like most Club sites. It is beautifully landscaped with all the plants and trees you expect in this part of Britain. It is quiet even though there is a pleasant cafe/bar area too. What really stood out though are the totally different shower blocks compared to the usual dimly lit ones you find on club sites. Beautifully tiled in bright colours and with plenty of natural light much more typical of sites abroad. And totally free WiFi that actually works like home why are all Club sites not like this. An excellent location for touring Cornwall that is easy to find and access. Only one negative observation is that white peg pitches are not plentiful and several are very small here. Most hard standing pitches are fully serviced and will cost extra so if you want a larger pitch and more choice you might be better booking a red peg pitch. Otherwise it's a real pleasure to stay here and one of the best sites we have found in forty years with the club I hope they don't mess it up. Interesting to compare this recent addition to the network with the Cayton Bay site we stayed at last month. That has a huge shower block that is quite dimly lit inside and lacking very much space. Very little new planting either yet so hope that improves.

Good but very expensive

I echo the views of The real BFM. As a private site the value for money and running was excellent. As an example I booked the site for a week when it was privately run, following the take over by the club the cost increased by some £50. I always thought that the club was run for the benefit of members, not for excessive profit. Some where along the line I think the club has lost its original ethos. After our last stay I do not think we will return. There are other sites which provide better value for money.

Spectacular - in more ways than one

I should preface this by saying that we have been Carnon Downs regulars for at least 10 years. Make no bones about it, this is a super campsite; spacious, good quality cloakroom facilities, in a marvellous position near Truro with a bus stop in easy walking distance, a beautiful modern licensed bar/cafe, storage facilities, a large dog walking field and sympathetic and intelligently designed landscaping. However, this was all put in place by the original owner and has simply been taken over as a going (indeed, thriving) concern by the Club. We have now stayed twice since the takeover, and I do have some concerns about the new direction, and some of the old aspects that need urgent attention. The first major concern is safety. The site is designed in paddocks, and the far paddocks are the other side of a lane that runs right through the campsite to properties and other facilities. This lane is completely open so that people can access the campsite from the road. Previously there was an understanding that this lane was off limits to users of the site and this was briefed on arrival. but I saw several campers simply access the site bypassing the reception. This is terrible security. This has to be dealt with before something worse happens. There is also no barrier at the entrance; there never was, but that’s not acceptable any more. The facilities are great but starting to look tired. They need redecoration – simple things like varnishing the doors to stop the wood deteriorating. One toilet block is permanently shut. The staff mow the grass every other day - which sounds fine until the entire day is full of loud, droning lawn mowers and you are cleaning grass cuttings off everything all the time. Not quiet or relaxing. We weren’t allowed to choose a pitch beforehand – but once we arrived little signs started appearing on pitches saying that they had been prebooked. I don’t understand how that can happen. However, the most spectacular change must be the pricing. The prices used to be higher than most, but fair. The prices have risen stratospherically since the Club took over. Stay on a serviced pitch in high season, which is most of the summer, and you are paying almost £45 a night for two people and a caravan or motorhome. Add £12.50 a night for any additional person, add for another car and it all mounts up very quickly indeed. You can get a hotel room for that! And really - what are you getting - a piece of a field with a tap and a power point and not even one you asked for. I have to be honest and say I think Carnon Downs is no longer value for money.

Nice site, a few minor niggles

Pluses: Nicely located - close to Truro, close to King Harry Ferry which gets you on the other side of the bay, right next to the road to Falmouth and the Lizard. Reasonably quiet. The road is barely audible. Lots of places to cycle and walk nearby. Kayaking and other water sports need a car to get to the closest place for portage (5-10 mins drive). Gigantic pitches. Width is same as usual, length is a meter or two longer than most campsites. Reasonable facilities which have unisex cubicles and do not fully close down for the usual two hour cleaning like on most UK campsites. Food van with good quality food on site every evening. Minuses: All sinks use the ancient 1960-es style dual tap arrangement. While the toilet/shower blocks are quite nice, I have some doubts about them having sufficient capacity in high season. Though, on a second thought, the site is mostly serviced pitches for large caravans and motorhomes which have their own facilities. So, maybe, it is enough after all. Notes: The water pressure at the serviced pitches is several bar, if not the maximum 8. Make sure you have good hoses and connections and turn off the water while away from the rig. All water taps terminate with a 3/4 screw, not a quick connect.

Top Site - perfect for touring

First time to this site, located 5 minutes outside Truro, which having a Motorhome was fantastic. Being so close we picked up a hire car as we passed on way to site. Hired for 2 days to allow us to explore. Just outside the site is the bus stop which takes you down to Falmouth etc. The site was very quiet when we went there just before Easter. I cannot fault this site, I can see why this was purchased by the club…..there are hundreds of sites for us to try but this will definitely be a returning one

Attractive, spacious site

A friendly welcome from the receptionists greeted us on our arrival at the Carnon Downs C&MC site. There was plenty of choice when it came to locating our motorhome for our six night stay. We were on a full serviced pitch which would have been large enough for an additional car and a small/medium sized awning. We were close enough to the spotless facilities and recycling/bin area. The attractive grounds were, as you would expect on a C&MC site, beautifully maintained. Bus stops near the site to Truro, Falmouth, Helston and beyond. Fish & choos/pizza van came to the site late (7.15pm onwards) on Wednesday. On the negative side - no site wide WiFi - although some people may regard this as a positive - and, as you would expect being next to the A39, some background traffic noise.

Very nice but

It’s a lovely site but it is expensive. I looked forward to using the cafe/bar for a morning coffee or an early evening drink. Sadly it wasn’t open and upon enquiry I was told it would probably open sometime in April. When the cafe/bar isn’t open a lower price should be offered and more importantly, the lack of opening should be on the website. We were very disappointed, as the cafe/bar was one of the reasons we booked. The site is what you want from the club otherwise.
