Newly acquired site

As some other reviewers have written, there are good and bad things about the site. Easy to find and well located for the area, well spaced pitches, good on site dog walking, 4 toilet blocks(see below too), helpful staff, but less good might be: No site barriers for security -unusual on Club sites. Two of the toilet blocks smelt distinctly unpleasant even outside them. The serviced pitches had no tv aerial. It showed the remnants of the previous commercial site too with the entertainment for example. I’m sure over the next year or so the site will reach the standard we expect of Club Sites but it does appear to need some tweaking.

Things to know

Site has some good points and bad points. Good Ideally located, spacious site, maintained well, small cafe/bar, visiting food vans. Bad No lighting in "greenfield" at night (need torch) fresh and grey water points need ramp as high lip makings it difficult for elderly caravanners to use (fit ramp) chemical toilet disposal only at toilet block. No entry barrier control which lead to random cars entering site and just viewing site. If site is brought upto CAMC standards it could be a premim destination. Seems to run on old commercial site rules unless CAMC staff involved.

Issues CAMC need to deal with

We stayed here end of July , there are positives and negatives The good , Large pitches , free and easy as to how you set you unit up ( we had serviced pitch ) , open or shady available , close to Truro with major supermarkets , handy for Falmouth and great seafood shop , very good washrooms / showers , daily food wagons ( which can be busy) café on site . a large dog walking area. Not so good , having spent a not inconsiderable amount on an annual CAMC wifi subscription , I find on site only free wifi in reception area , and not to pitches. The lack of warden control of dog owners letting their dogs run free and defecating where they please , and the owners not clearing up A left over from joint ownership was the number of reserved pitches , it took nearly an hour ( following an 8 hour drive ) to find a vacant pitch , I hope in 2023 things will revert to CAMC , and first come first served . The road noise from the adjacent main road can be intrusive , so pitch away from it And as usual SPEEDING by members on site roads In summery we did have a good time and would not be adverse to returning

Good site

We stayed for 13 nights over the last 2 weeks. Site busy but very well maintained. All dealings with site staff friendly and curtious. Facilities are shared but individual cubicles very good standard. This site has a small food and drink facility that was really appreciated and staff very good, various food vendors on site over the course of the week. We didn’t try them all but can recommend Pizza and fish and chips vans. Pitches large and some shade dependent on location we had a service pitch so all good. Bus stop at gates if needed for transport and seemed popular. Enjoyed our stay and the site.

Don’t change a thing!

We visited this site in June, initially booked for seven nights, but added an extra two once we were there, as we liked it so much. It was a last minute decision to go there and we’re glad we did. It’s not your average CAMC site, we were on a standard hard standing, not serviced, it was bigger than we’re used to with a good sized grass area between pitches and behind them. With the added bonus of a wooden picnic table if you were lucky, if not wait for a pitch to be vacated and walk off with theirs, it’s quite amusing to watch. The toilet block we used was the one furthest from reception and is definitely not the norm. It has individual shower rooms each with a loo and washbasin, or there are just toilet and washbasin for those not showering ( think Black Knowl before the update) I have mobility issues so used the adapted shower room, it’s one of the better ones I’ve experienced. There is a HUGE field for dog walking which our spaniel made full use of, she gives it five woofs. Plus there are numerous paths in amongst the trees round the outside of the site. The only downside we found was the dangerous speed that some people drove round the gravel tracks kicking up clouds of dust, not to mention the risk of hitting a child. If only it wasn’t so far from home it would be one for our regular visits list.

Very spacious site, central to so much of Cornwall.

Large, spacious, pricey but we had a really enjoyable 7 night stay on this site. So easy to find and enter being directly off the main Truro - Falmouth road. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, the site itself being quiet and peaceful with no road noise intrusion whatsoever. The maturity of the trees and shrubs helped add a pleasant feel to the place. We had an endless choice of places to visit and things to do. No hesitation in recommending it to other members.

Highly recommended

Fantastic landscaped site with mature trees. Airy clean toilet and shower blocks. Spacious pitches. Great dog walks and friendly staff. It also has a really nice cafe on site.

The Club has a Lot of work to do

Lovely looking site in an ideal situation, but the road round the site are terrible loose chippings no good for the Disabled like me with scooter or wheelchair, the facilities needed upgrading to Club standards, the Disabled room is terrible no seat in the shower or anywhere to your soap an shampoo etc, I know the Club has only just took the site over & it looks like there is a New Shower Block that has been Built, but we were allocated with a Disabled Pitch Witch was next to to out dated Block mixed showers, No it will be a long time before we return the Club has a lot to do but the Potential is there of it becoming a top site,

Great site

We've stayed here several times, both when under private ownership and since the club bought it. I'm pleased to say our club has only improved on what was a very good site already. The facilities are great and the pitches widely spaced. It's within easy reach of the bustling port town of Falmouth and the beautiful Roseland peninsula. It's also a great centre for exploring the rest of Cornwall, with so many great places within an hour's drive. As well as the usual information, reception hand out a really good set of information sheets with short walks from the site. When we were there in June there was a mobile food truck almost every evening: pasty & pint, pizzas, fish & chips, plus a quiz evening and sea shanties. Top tips: Chyreen Fruit Farm (a 20 minute walk away in the village) is a great place for fruit and veg, and you'll be surprised how up-market the local Carnon Downs Spar shop is. In Falmouth, don't miss Beerwolf, a real ale pub come bookshop.

June 2022

We have stayed regularly at Carnon Downs for several years, it is a spacious, well kept site. There is road noise but this is the penalty for easy access to the main road between Truro and Falmouth. Our dogs appreciated the extra mowed area in the seven acre dog walk this year and we appreciated the addition of 'dog poo' bins. The sea shanty evening was well attended & was a pleasure to attend with the licensed bar open/a beautiful summer's evening! The only downside was the extortionate cost for the pitches which is probably the reason for the site being less full than previous years. Surely it would be better to have a full site at a slightly reduced cost? There are nearby CL sites charging £20 a night for a full serviced pitch less than half the cost of this site.
