Slightly disappointed

Our third visit in as many years to Brighton, love the site, love the location & of course love Brighton. We've got fold-up bikes so take the opportunity to cycle either 'east' to Rottingden on the cycle-way then come back via the promenade which is most enjoyable. 'West' takes you down to the Marine Parade then onto the cycle-way right past the Pier, past the Grand Hotel [lovely afternoon tea at a reasonable price] and onto towards Hove & Worthing. Very gentle cycling, just have to watch the 'kammi-kazzie' pedestrians who tend to wander in & out of the cycle lanes. Sadly because of Covid-19 some of the pubs & restaurants, tea rooms & cafe's weren't open but it was still a great place to visit. The wardens on site, as usual, were great. Under extreme pressure trying to cope with impatient guests trying to book in under tropical temperatures. "Only one person at a time in reception" that's fine with me, just means a little longer checking in, please don't moan they're doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances. Facilities were spot on, I suppose you could query the way and/or number of showers/toilets/urinals were open/closed, but that's the CC's decision not the wardens. The 'band' system didn't really work but that was the 'inmates' rather than the wardens fault. One of my biggest gripes is the dreadful Wi-fi at CC sites & sadly Brighton was no different, Air Angel who run the wi-fi offer the most appalling service known to man. We were less than 35' from a wi-fi pole & could we get online, could we heck as like. 11pm or 7am one out of every 10 tries got connected & even then coverage was useless. I'll give Air Angel their dues, I called & complained & after checking my coverage etc gave me a full refund. Last grizzle, the state of the majority of pitches leaves a lot to be desired, We were there in the middle of the biggest heatwave in years, but the grass hadn't been cut for ages, was tall enough for a quick cut. The amount of weeds growing on the hardstanding was very evident, but the weed growth on the grassy area was dreadful. Can we blame Covid-19 for staff shortages I really don't know. Would we go back? I'm not sure, Littlehampton is down the road so we may try that next time. Lastly, the comments on the 'migrant campers' camped on the approach road is not really the CC's problem, allowing them in to use 'our' facilities is, so I would expect the CC to employ security from say 10pm to 7am to stop these infiltrators using our facilities which obviously doesn't help track & trace if a case of Covid-19 reared it's ugly head. Apologies for the rather long saga, just saying what I see.

Friendly site

We were on a secluded spacious grass pitch and found everyone very friendly on the site. You can cut across the common to avoid walking on the potholed road to get out to the main road, and can then get to the beach / Marina, in about 15/20 minutes. There is a beautiful cycle / walk path going along the undercliff which is well worth doing, and there lots of places to eat in the Marina. We walked into Brighton along the front which took about 50 minutes. Brighton itself was pretty full on and busy and we realised we prefer quieter locations! It's good to be able to get the bus back from the centre of Brighton to the site. Probably wouldn't visit again but this is due to preferring being more out in the countryside.

Disappointing

The site its self is nice and clean, quite open so had a nice feel. Toilet blocks cleaned every morning with limited access due to Covid19 which is fine. The only issue I have with this site is, on the approach to the site, there are a number of caravans parked on side road leading to the site, and then on 3 occasion the people stopping in these vans, not on the site, were found using the facilities of the showers etc. This really means there is no track and trace that can be trusted on the site, and people coming in and off the site, not paying to stop there, are using the facilities, so things are now safe to be left. This site needs a proper gated entrance to stop people just walking in. Very poor. That being said the staff did apologise, but said there was nothing they could do to stop them. If you still want to go. The site is a 15 mins walk down to the beach and marina with loads of eating places and a few shops. The pier is about 40 mins walk, but we got a taxi one way, so not so bad.

August 2020 Disappointed

Only my second Club site, and what a let-down. the approach to the site is down a pot holed road lined by cars and motorhomes making the approach difficult if you meet anyone leaving the site, sports clubs and college along the lane. check in was straight forward and staff were friendly the pitch was well kept and close to toilet block and bin's. I choose this pitch so no complaints about the bin's been emptied or noise caused by people in the toilet block. however nobody adhered to the wrist band rule and at one point a young lad decided he was going to have a shower with his girlfriend in the male ablutions. When I questioned a number of lads why they were not using the wristband system I was just told to f&%k off. We had the police on site one night to attend to some out of order campers. Cars speeding well above the site speed limit. Sadly just did not feel safe. Over all a very disappointing stay and will not be going back.

Disappointed

Very disappointed with our 5th visit to this site. We decided to make a short trip to Brighton as our 1st post lockdown motorhome trip. The booking in process was not what the Club had stated. A member of staff asked that my wife get out and queue to book in while I remained in the vehicle to move the motorhome as we moved up the queue. My wife had to wait Outside reception in 34 degrees of direct sunshine with no shade. Ridiculous! We were not informed of the toilet block Covid procedures, so had to ask at reception. The procedures clearly did not work. There were no wristbands in the jar even though there was nobody in the toilet block. The wristband jar contained no more that 1/4 of an inch of liquid and about half a dozen flies. All very hygienic!!! The pitch we selected backed on to trees. Under the trees was a number of pieces of rubbish, mainly plastic. Had obviously not been cleaned/checked for ages. We do accept that the staff have a tough job at the moment, but our experience was not what we expect from a Club site. Will not be going back!

August 2020

I concur totally with the above last 2 reviews. We did not actually feel safe in the site, my 12 year old refused to go out alone. The facilities were really very dirty and considering there is a global pandemic on I was surprised by this. Caravan Club Covid rules were broken and nobody did anything about it, regularly we saw pitches with external visitors on. The toilets were used by people not from the site, site wardens you really need to get a grip on behaviour and facilities management, it is really not acceptable for the Caravan & Motorhome Club. Noise & parties - these were never addressed by wardens even after complaints: the first few nights saw neighbours having to talk to another neighbour about the music they were playing extremely loudly. On the last night a large group of men partied until 6 in the morning...( 5 men arrived in a motorhome and yet far more men and women were at the party! - work that one out in terms of Covid rules and regulations). The large group were urinating in the grass verge in full broad daylight. Dogs - not everybody likes dogs, wardens never tackled the large amounts of dogs off the leads roaming the site, the dogs did their business on the grass verges and these were never cleaned up by the owners. The site was a mess...After months of lockdown and rules put in place for every bodies protection I feel let down by this site. We will not be returning! 😔

ok for short stay

This is an urban site despite its proximity to the downs. Busy when we visited and felt it. lots of hard standing and feels like a car park, a stop over. Well kept and clean facilities. The access road through East Brighton park is a potholed mess and the park itself was strewn with litter. Very tricky getting through parked cars. Brighton is a disappointment, grubby and run down. Sussex is lovely though. Ditchling offers spectacular views and walks. Only stayed because I had an event nearby. Would never choose as a holiday destination.

Not what we expected

Whilst we have had a nice holiday we feel like we have a few points to make...some of which we will write directly to the club about. The club website and site posters advertise that the site is COVID secure which gives you confidence.there is a system in place (wristbands in the bucket), however this system doesn’t not work. Unfortunately there seems to be several people who disregard the system which is there to protect us all and so when you use the toilet block you don’t know how many people are in, the bands go missing , people go in without a band, and I even witnessed a man blatantly coming in to use the women’s shower despite a queue of women being there. The toilet blocks were closed for 2.5 hours every afternoon for cleaning but several items eg a werthers sweet on the floor remained for several days. During our visit the cleaning times changed to add another half hour morning clean. The road through the park which is the entrance to the site is occupied by several and various motor homes, caravans and vans powered by generators which seem to be permanent residences for some and stopover places for others. They leave litter and a strong smell of urine. Goodness knows where they empty their toilets!!! I do feel site toilets should be locked as anybody could come in and use them. Brighton itself is quite scruffy , there is a lot of graffiti and litter. The marina is quite run down , many shops are empty possibly due to covid. The pitch and putt was good fun £9 each for 16 holes and the cafe was nice and not expensive. saltdean beach is lovely and there’s is a lido which we didn’t use , apparently during covid entrance times are restricted but normally you can go for the day. Would we return? We had a nice pitch, and possibly our trip has been affected by covid, but in all honesty, probably not.

5 night stay July 2020

This is a lovely tiered site, well maintained, with views of the surrounding downs. It’s location for Brighton is excellent, though if you’re still a bit nervous of large crowds as we emerge from the pandemic, might be best to avoid Brighton seafront. Social distancing seems to be hard to grasp for many. The approach to the site through the park resembled a travellers ‘camp’ when we stayed. Caravans, Motorhomes, and vans in varying states, litter etc. Plus, the approach road has some nasty potholes. Not the clubs fault, but they should be putting pressure on the local council to sort things out. We also found the decoration and external lighting on some of our fellow campers to be somewhat ‘over the top’. If that’s your ‘thing’ then great, but please don’t make the assumption that everyone likes it. I love the flashy poles attached to A frames, but not when parts of the site resemble the Las Vegas strip. Less is more; stay classy Brighton 😎
