Holidays 2019

Just returned from our three week holiday and this was our third visit this year. Our pitch was tidy and clean, hedges trimmed and grass mowed. It was nice to see that the sparrows and rabbits were still in residence. On one occasion in the three weeks I had to queue for a shower so I don't think this is anything to worry about. My daughter came to stay for a few nights who is a wheelchair user, she found travelling on the surfaces around the site challenging as it is gravel. Her comment about the disabled washroom was nice that it was only used by radar key users so was always available when needed, however the room was small and would not have accommodated a larger wheelchair. However, it was spotlessly clean and the water drained quickly in the wet room style shower so the floor did not remain wet and slippery. We are aware that renovations are due to take place and would recommend having a visual alert e.g. flashing light, in all the showers for the fire alarms in case of guests with hearing impairments. We didn't use the restaurant but that was our choice but it was nice to know it was available and heard a lot of people remark favourably about it. Maybe if the dog had been allowed up in the bar we might have gone for a drink in the evening. Really reassuring to see the dog walk remained unchanged and well looked after by campers and staff. As on previous visits the wardens showed professionalism and friendliness. We like to think that the changes that need to be made are made but at the same time keeping the character and atmosphere of the current site which enhances the peacefulness of this location.

First timers very well looked after

This was our first trip away in our motorhome, so obviously a bit apprehensive when we arrived, but we had no need to worry. The owners were extremely friendly and talked us through all the site options and where to go etc. and even came to check we were OK. The view from our pitch was stunning ,overlooking rolling hills and countryside. Site was very quiet and relaxing. There is a fantastic pub about a mile walk away with live jazz playing and showcasing local beers and ciders, and was a perfect way to spend a few hours! Just want to say thank you for making our first trip a great one.

A Marmite Site

We arrived at the site on the Friday before the August Bank Holiday weekend. The site is layout is very tight with culdesacs leaving little room for manoeuvring. so the Wardens sensibly allocated new arrivals a pre-allocated pitch. While waiting for the wife to book in, I spoke to the warden who explained that the site had received mixed reviews. It was a bit like Marmite you will either love it or hate it!. While many of the comments about the site are valid, Limited facilities which need updated and very tight pitches (Which is where a motor mover is a godsend) we liked the sense of privacy afforded by the Hedges around each pitch. Wel liked the quiet peaceful nights no traffic noise, lots of wildlife; bird song in the mornings, with an on-site on-site bar whats not to like? If you have your own facilities onboard your caravan or motorhome then the facilities are a minor concern. We would especially like to thank the staff for their hard work trying to keep clean and maintain a site which has its challenges, while still managing to be friendly and welcoming. As for location, the site is ideally located for visiting West Bay, Charmouth, Lyme Regis and Dorchester. If If you take a look at some of the more commercial sites located nearby with rows of Caravans with little character, then this site is a gem. We would be happy to return it is just a shame we will have to wait until after the refurbishment.

Happy campers

We have visited this site for the last 4 years we cannot understand any of the negative feedback. People moan about the staff cutting the grass & hedges but it’s only once a week & they would moan if it was untidy!! It is a nice quiet quirky site the wardens are brilliant & could not be more helpful, the facilities are spotless, so please ignore the negative feedback & come & look for yourself. Sue & John Day

A pleasant and relaxing few days at Bingham Grange

Having read all the negative reviews we weren't sure what to expect but we were very pleasantly surprised. The Wardens are very welcoming, cheerful, hard working and helpful. They keep the site in lovely condition and we certainly had no complaints about their need to use power tools to keep it looking like that. Whilst the toilet and shower facilities do need to be expanded they are kept in pristine condition. We never object to being allocated our pitch and can understand why it is done here. Our only negative on the pitch is that access is tight, impossible to get our motorhome in or out without crossing the grass areas. We were happy that the vehicle needed very little levelling and the gravel caused us no problems. We didn't use the motorhome dump point as it looked a little small and not easy to access. The Chemical Toilet Disposal point does need upgrading but was clean and usable on the 2 occasions we needed it. The food in the restaurant was of a very high quality and at a reasonable price but the portions were far too large both for our 8 year old and for us Wrinklies. This criticism has been said to the Bar Staff before and the Chefs really do need to sort that out. Like so many people we hate to see food thrown away! The bar really does need to offer a real ale, especially with a local brewery just down the road. Not wanting to take the motorhome out whilst we were there we used the local buses and hired a small car. We've never met so many cheerful and helpful bus drivers!! The great attraction for us was the Jurassic Coast. We learned much from the staff at Lyme Regis museum and our grand-daughter went home with lots of the fossils that she found! We look forward to seeing how the Club will develop the site and bring it up to the usual standards across the board and we expect to return there in a couple of years to enjoy another stay.

In need of refurbishment

The facilities were poor and not up to usual club standard, insufficient for the number of pitches. We understood the need for pitches to be allocated and were not unhappy about it. The location is not ideal for motorhomers as the only cycle access is along a very busy road. There’s a footpath across fields to Bridport but it’s quite a distance to the centre and beach. The local buses are not very frequent. There are plans for some refurbishment so hopefully the site will be brought up to standard.

Not up to standard

We stopped off here for a night to break the journey down to Devon. We had no choice of pitch despite booking 6 weeks in advance. The pitch we were given was too small even for our small campervan, partly due to a trough of "flowers" placed across it which we weren't allowed to move. The trough was full of weeds & obviously hadn't been touched all season! We thought we might eat in the restaurant - but it was closed (in August? Really?) - this is not mentioned when booking. We had a drink in the bar instead, but noted this this closed at 9.00 p.m. (in August? Really?) - again, not stated on the website. We only realised the next morning whilst drinking coffee outside that our pitch was right next to the only chemical waste disposal point, which was "busy" that morning - lovely! There are nowhere near enough toilets / showers for what is quite a large site, so we had to queue for both, in the rain. The last straw was, that whilst eating our breakfast a man appeared & started trimming the hedge right by our van with a petrol - driven hedge trimmer! He had ear defenders - we, unfortunately did not. I complained, but was simply told "it needs doing" - but the hedges were fine (his time would have been better spent replanting the "flower" trough!). I complained at reception that we hadn't been given any warning of this work, but no discount on our fee was forthcoming. At over £30 for 1 night I felt this was a rip off & way below what I expect from the club. I know this site is new & due for refurbishment, but until this has taken place & it is up to the usual club high standards, it should be offered at a much - reduced rate. We will not be returning!

Great potential

Bingham Grange. We stayed on the site in July for 7 nights. We had read the various reviews of the site and were pretty well prepared regarding what we could expect. We found that most of the negative comments about the site's infrastructure were basically correct. The toilet / shower facilities are, given the size of the site, inadequate to say the least. They were however kept as clean as the strange layout and general construction would allow. The wardens seem to come in for much praise and we can only add to that. They were helpful and very friendly. There was only one chemical emptying point for a site of around 140 pitches and that was near reception. However, the site slopes down the side of the valley and, as I understand it, there are no drains below the entrance area. Clearly it is a major task to install new drains but the club apparently has plans to do this and install pumps to raise the wastewater etc back up to the level of the existing sewer system. Plans are also afoot to provide new toilet blocks to the club's high standard, pitches are to be leveled and proper hard standings laid, (the small pea gravel is a nuisance and is too deep). What will happen to the miles (literally) of hedging? It's rather a nice feature, but then that's subjective. The down side to the hedges is the constant need to keep them trimmed; but it's like painting Blackpool Tower................some part always need doing, and it is very demanding on time. The bar is handy and we had a decent meal at a fair price. There is a very handy bus service into Bridport or one can walk through the fields. It takes about an hour. The 10 amp electric supply is not a problem as we are in a caravan and not a house. The lack of club wi-fi was irritating having just renewed my subscription but again, I was aware of this beforehand. What I find difficult to come to terms with is the fact that the infrastructure falls well below the standard that we expect from the club and yet they are charging us full whack for the use of those facilities. Though I look forward to seeing when it is finished, I shudder to think what the charges will be when all the work is done. We enjoyed our week at Bingham Grange and I have tried to be fair and objective with my comments. The site has great potential.

Rest and Relaxation

We just had a really relaxing week at Bingham Grange, yes I agree with other comments regarding not being able to take dogs to the bar, but it's not the end of the world. lets hope that the caravan club sees sense and moves the bar and restaurant, as they do state dogs can not be left in the caravans. After all that, We are looking forward to our next visit.
