I stopped at several places on my road trip, and this one was my favourite place to park my caravan for sure. I’m a private person so I loved the way there were trees and logs laid out to mark out your pitch making it private! And all the pitches were so big and spacious! Ofcourse it doesn’t have a toilet and shower block but it didn’t bother me. And the way you can walk through a gate and walk out into the wonderland of the lake is lovely. Wardens very friendly on arrival! It’s a really difficult drive to the site even if you take the right way, and don’t do what I did and take the wrong road to it. It left me on the edge of my seat! But very worth it once you get there. Only massive downside to this site is how it’s closed so much of the year. A real shame, if love it if the club could make it an all year round one. Only other downside was even in November the nearby lake was covered in blue green algae so my doggy couldn’t swim but hardly the sites fault. Will definitely be coming back.
Doesn’t get better than this!
I have visited Borrowdale site many times and absolutely love it. Having read the previous review it appears we don’t all appreciate the same things.
The approach to the site can be a tad interesting but not too difficult. Once on site the wardens are wonderfully helpful and friendly. The views outside the site are amazing and being able to walk through the gate out to the Lake is wonderful. Walks abound from the site and there are ones to suit all levels of fitness. We have been fortunate to sit in our caravan and watch deer, hare, red squirrel, woodpecker and lots of other birds. In the evening listening to the screech of Owls on their nightly hunt.
No there are no toilet blocks, the pitches are pretty shady and the WiFi non existent on the pitches but non of that matters a jot compared to the peace and quiet, outstanding scenery and walks and the wildlife. We can’t wait for our next visit!
A glorified CL
I have absolutely nothing detrimental to say about the Wardens. They were very welcoming and helpful. The site however was poor. Although very quiet and peaceful the general facilities were very poor. It is a big site with many pitches but there were only 2 drinking water and water waste areas. I rely on my internal motorhome tank and I had to unplug everything and then drive to the water point to fill up each time. I don't have space for an aqua roll.
The pitches are of a good size but are overshadowed by the huge number of trees that blocked the few glimpses of the sun that we did have in the week and also blocked any views. It was wet and took along time to dry out due to the darkness and overshadowing.
There were none of the facilities that you generally expece on a 'Club Site'. No Toilets or showers as a minimum.
This really is just a very large CL, of which I have stayed on many with much better facilities than Borrowdale.
It’s as god as it gets
This is our third stay at borrowdale. The peace and tranquility along with the most beautiful woodland walks alongside Derwentwater are spectacular. We have been so lucky to have had encounters with both red squirrels and roe deer’s. This site is for people who want explore the area by walking Cat bells is a great circular walk from the site as is the walk around Derwentwater. Lots of stops for refreshments along the way.
If you are ok with no toilets and shower block, but love walking and nature this is a site you have to visit. The management team are so helpful and knowledgeable, they are a great team.
peace, quiet and nature
We stopped here in our campervan to break our journey up to Scotland, we liked it so much we stopped for 2 nights on the way home. It is nestled in woodlands very close to the shores of Derwent water and if you like walking there are various routes you can take from here, or just have a gentle amble along the shore to Portinscale and the café there or the other direction to the Lodore Hotel. The reception sell discounted tickets on the Derwent water launch for that lovely sale round the Lake. The site does not have toilets or showers but as a self-contained unit that was not a problem for us. Every section has its own toilet waste disposal, grey water and fresh water points and these are kept immaculate. The whole site has that back to nature feel and is very peaceful, you are encouraged to feed the birds and some caravans had their own feeders which was lovely to see. The road to it could be tricky for a car and caravan in busy times but we had no problems. There were some big motorhomes and varying sized caravans there so obviously no too much of a problem. The wardens were lovely so friendly and knowledgeable. We have worked out we can do long weekends here from Suffolk so we will be back as we love the Lakes and this area.
Our favourite club site of all
this site is perfect. it is set in national trust woodland right on the edge of Derwent water with lots and lots of dog walks directly off the site. we walked along the lake to the local pubs for a drink and sat in the sunshine admiring the stunning countryside. The beauty of the place, the peace and tranquility are just what we want in a holiday. Yes it is in woodland so if you are a sun worshipper the pitches don't get a lot of sun, there is no toilet block or showers, but we never use them anyway as our caravan shower and toilet are fine. The journey into the site is interesting!!! but its so worth it when you arrive. The site staff I think were emergency staff so had only been there a couple of weeks but they could not have been more helpful and what things they didn't know they found out for us. We had such a lovely time we have booked to go again in October, My only criticism is that it is not open all year round.
Access
Marvelous site but tortuous access through Grange, especially when cars parked up the mainstreet.
Almost Back to nature
This was our second visit to this site and we can highly recommend it if you are looking for great woodland walks, stunning walks around the lake, and even a few roe deer 🦌 stopping by to say hello. The site team, are extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful, nothing seems to much.
Beware there is no toilet block, when considering th3 price this is disappointing, but would not nor will not stop us visiting again.
The perfect site
If we had the ability to create the perfect landscape and put a site in the perfect location it we couldn't do better than Low Manesty in Borrowdale. In our opinion it is the perfect site in the perfect location. It is a dream for walkers: walk out the site entrance and you're at the foot of Cat Bells and have a choice of footpaths in various directions up the mountain or on the level, all of which offer great views. Walk out of the site through the gate at Lakeside Gardens and the short walk to Derwent water and you are rewarded with the best view in the Lakes looking south into Borrowdale and Castle Crag. The final exit from the site will take you through woodland to the lake launch landing stage at Brandlehow. We visited in June and saw loads of nesting birds. There are several tearooms half an hour's walk from the site. In fact you could stay for a week and visit a different one every day. This is the one site we return to time and time again and are already planning our next visit.
There are no shower blocks or toilet blocks but all modern caravans and most campervans have these facilities. The last few miles of towing are a bit narrow especially through the village of Grange where parked cars can be a problem. We've visited this site 7 times to date and once did have a bit of a squeeze through Grange. The bridge has a 6'6" width restriction but our 7'3" van fits with the best part of a foot either side: it is the village itself which is a problem. The site is in woodland. You can't see the site from outside which means most pitches don't have views and some pitches are dark.
We didn't have an awning on our most recent visit but because all the non-awning pitches had been booked for one night of our stay we had to book an awning pitch. We didn't particularly want an awning pitch and were happy to take a non-awning pitching leaving the larger awning pitches free for someone else but the warden insisted we take an awning pitch. We've never had to do that before at any club site.
Just Perfect
Secluded, amazingly peaceful & stunning location. Absolutely love this site for the access to Derwentwater, the walks from the site & being so close to nature. Have not slept so soundly for a long time...we will be back again and again. Thank you Phil & Bev for looking after this beautiful campsite so well.
