Well located for Bolton Abbey and the river

We wanted a site for a quick two night break, and this was a good choice. We had not been before, though we like the Bolton Abbey area with walks on the river, partly not attracted because the site seemed rather cramped and under trees. Both these were true, the pitches rather close together and close to the driveway. However, it also proved a very good handy location for our main purpose which was to have a day walking the river up to Burnsall. Fine weather helped. Finally I agree with the reviewer who commented on the very narrow arch lower down on the road - my towing mirror suffered here.

A lovely site but with some reservations

We've just got back from this small and quite intimate site. I agree with a previous reviewer that the site is rather tired now and the shower block is much in need of renovation. The wardens are delightful and very helpful and we had a lovely stay. But some niggles. The site is on the Bolton Abbey estate and we rather felt that the estate was a bit money grabbing. Plus, the CMC obviously have to use the estate signage. So you have to look out for the tearoom sign which has the site sign at the very bottom. We very nearly missed it and at least one couple drove up and down for an hour looking for the site (how they turned on those narrow dale roads is beyond me to imagine!). There is little waiting space and there's a problem. Because arrival time is 1pm - and those in the know arrive much, much earlier than that. Hard for the wardens to turn them away because where do they go other than block the access road. Then those of us who stick to rules get the worst pitches. There was a LOT of grumbling about that. We arrived at 1.35 and only had the choice of two pitches - a number of rigs had arrived well before us. Bad, very bad. The site has a lot of trees so unless you are lucky, you can get stuck on a pitch that gets very little sunshine. Also, it would have been helpful to mention that to access the site means going through a very narrow old arch. Terrifyingly narrow actually - it's immediately after a bend and caught us out completely. My husband is an excellent 'tower' but was convinced he had banged the van (he hadn't). Forewarned would have been forearmed. Last things - the most gorgeous walks, along the river, up the dales, endless paths. Brilliant. But we have a young dog and there was hardly anywhere she could go off the lead. Either it was leads only or there was stock. But a great stay and we loved the area.

Lovely location, but the site is looking tired

This is a lovely site in a wonderful location, but is now in need of investment. It is small and intimate, and is very relaxing. The walks in the area, particularly down to the river, are spectacular, and its worth visiting just for these. This site opened in 1982, and in some areas it feels it. The shower block is in need of renovation, possibly even replacement, with rust and cracked panel evident The mirrors in the men's privacy cubicles are so ridiculously low, that I had to get on my knees to shave. Yes, I know that the window prevents them being put higher, so why not put them on the side walls? The towel hooks in both showers and cubicle are also so low that towels drag on the floor. In truth, these are minor as we had a great time, and would visit again.

Clean, peaceful site great for walking

Wonderful location, well maintained & a really friendly reception. Site is well sheltered, quiet, peaceful & relaxing. Great place for walking - straight out of the site; gentle walks along the River Wharfe or more strenuous walks on the surrounding moors where you will get fantastic views. Will definitely return. Pubs are a few miles away so OK to visit when walking during the day but would need to drive in the evening; or be self sufficient on the site.

Small site in the forest

This site is quite pretty being on the edge of a forest. The trees perhaps make it a little dark. There is a small dog walk which is a help. We went here in the hope we could get to the Embsay Railway at Bolton Abbey but unfortunately we got our timing wrong as no trains were running. We felt this site was ideal for the fit and active person/dog as there were miles and miles of walks. You could go to Bolton Abbey and pay £10 per car and this enabled you to go into the grounds of Bolton Abbey and walk in the lovely grounds there. Quite a long walk from the campsite though. I don't think it is a site that would be suitable for smaller children although fine for the active older ones who love walking in pretty countryside. The staff were really friendly and helpful.

First visit

Our first visit to this lovely site. Very quiet and peaceful, a bit of in the middle of nowhere, but beautiful scenery. Skipton a lovely market town, Grassington a compact little village. Try a visit to Billy Bob's Ice Cream Parlour on the Skipton road its done out like an American Diner, 50's 60's music on the juke box, just our era. Great place for kids too. The site is as always spotless, tidy and well maintained and Janet and Brian couldn't be more helpful. The birds, ducks and squirrels kept us amused for hours. A lovely relaxing break

Lovely and peaceful

Only stayed 2 nights at this site and it was our first time, it was really peaceful and it was nice to see the rabbits, squirrels and ducks winding up our dog. There are lots of walks around the site and i must say the wardens are really friendly and helpful and i appreciated the help with my caravan, if only every site had wardens as nice as this.

Pure peace.

This site was pure bliss. So peaceful and quiet. It showed us another side to Yorkshire. Skipton was only a short drive and such a lovely town and market on several days. For walkers this site would be heaven. The facilities were up to usual club standards with hard working wardens always at hand. They really do a wonderful job none of us fully appreciate. Regarding families here, feel, probably not the place for children. Let us have some tranquility!
