Lovely for walking

If you like to walk/run/cycle then this site is in the perfect location. There are endless paths through the trees, across the heaths and into the beautiful villages of the New Forest. There are ponies at every turn, and the area offers plenty of opportunities to explore. The toilet and washing facilities on site are dated but clean. The site was pretty empty when we were there, but I am guessing there are queues in busier periods. We were not put off by the rather grumpy demeanour of one of the warden who shouted at us out of his caravan window when we pulled onto the site. What a pity. The welcome from wardens can make such a difference to your perception of a site.

What A Shame

We have been visiting this site for the past three years and love its location and surroundings and the previous staff. The wardens have recently changed, WHAT A SHAME the new head warden, Mark, is extremely abrupt and dismissive of the "mayhem" that he admits will be caused by permanent access restrictions which have been imposed by the Forestry Commission to the car park at the entrance to the lane leading to the site. The deputy is extremely nice, friendly and polite, what a difference the wardens can make! Will be reconsidering where to go next year.

Simply Brilliant

The only negative I have is that the facilities are out of date, but this does not stop them from being kept immaculate by the wardens. If you want a break from the hassle and bustle then this site delivers, with lovely walks starting at the gate. The wardens are really good.  We were in a group and had made a mistake with our booking, the wardens were extremely helpful and patient, and the result was we were able to transfer to this site.

Lovely peaceful Site

We spent the Easter Weekend at Black Knowl, and although the site was fully booked, nothing was too much trouble for the Wardens. We ran out of gas one evening, and the wardens offered to help us replace our gas bottle with another and the price they quoted us was very competetive in the area. We also had some issues with the electrics in our van and on the site in general, but on both occasions the Wardens were on hand to offer help & guidance. The individual washing / toilet pods are a little basic and need updating, but the main toilet block is very modern and is comparable with toilet blocks on other sites. All in all we had a lovely weekend and will definitely be returning later in the season.

Small changes

We stayed at black knowl for three nights. One of many occasions we have stayed here. We love it here but were quite surprised at a few changes . Firstly , the new wardens that have taken over do not do newspaper ordering for the next day . The site is a good half an hour walk to the shop and part of our holiday is having a lazy morning with the paper. We have a motorhome so it's inconvienient to pack everything up everytime . This is the first site we have stayed on that do not offer this . Also previously at easter the wardens do some kind of easter competition for the kids ,colouring , Egg hunt etc but there was nothing on offer this year.  The site was full , again this time of year with the ground not fully dried out we were surprised to see this. They were almost "crammed in". We saw a caravan with four cars on the pitch , another motorhome next door with three cars , it just seemed quite lax from the wardens. We felt sorry for people arriving as some pitches were a mess with muddy skid marks where previous people had tried and failed to get on. Again this should have been monitored by the wardens . The location is fantastic and we will return but the wardens really do need to be around the site more to be aware of what's going on .

Forest-astic !

We had a 13 night stay in the last two weeks of March, and found this site to be an excellent base for exploring this lovely area. At the time we visited, the grass pitches were not yet in use, and the site had a very spacious feel about it. The hard standing pitches are fairly generous, accepting a twin axle caravan, tow van & awning with ease.

Service points & bogs

Contrary to some earlier reviews, I found the service points to be quite conveniently spaced out, close enough to use, far away enough not to be a disturbance. Also , some previous reviews didn’t like the toilet block, we thought it was great, and a nice change to have separate rooms that are not gender specific, particularly useful if you’re travelling with someone who needs assistance showering. At some point, these will be redeveloped, and for me, that’ll be a loss, but I understand the present facilities are probably high maintenance. If you’ve stayed at Chew Valley, the shower rooms are a similar arrangement.

TV & data

Some pitches have TV hook up at the power bollard, and some don’t, we found reception through the vans standard antenna very good. There’s no wifi on this site at present, but mobile phone signal is pretty good, and we found tethering through the mobile (EE) gave good data for email & general browsing.

Getting about

By foot, Brockenhurst is about 30 mins walk, but the forest itself is right at the site entrance, fantastic for cycling and walking (the cycle maps from reception are a good investment ). Local towns that are easy to visit by car are Lyndhurst and Lymington, both very nice, though Lymington would be our favourite.

A day out on the IOW is very easy too, we drove to Lymington and parked at the ferry (£6 for 16 hours) and went over as foot passengers. It’s £21 for a combined ferry & ventis bus ticket through whiteline, purchased on the day. If you book online the day before, return is I think £8 using a CC discount code available from the site info room, and then ventis bus daypass is £10 purchased on the bus. Either way, you can have a good long day there quite cheaply, and the last ferry the day we were there was 21:40. It’s also possible to walk into Brockenhurst, and catch the train straight to the ferry, not sure of the fare. Excellent ventis timetables are available free from the ferry booking office on the IOW.

Too many local attractions on the mainland to list, but for any motorcycle anoracks, I have to recommend Sammy Millers museum, a really unusual collection and good value.

We’ll be back again, I have to say, the site wardens were very good, and the Local Indian in Brockenhurst, Dynasty, does excellent Balti & Biryani dishes.

Missing it already!

Peaceful Site

Our first visit to this site although we have been coming to the New Forest for many years. Ideal for walking from site as you are virtually surrounded by forest and our dog loved it. Site appearance and facilities were excellent and staff made us feel welcome. Well done! We will certainly be returning

Second time visiting this site and enjoyed it as much as the first, top site for dog walking and local attractions the site facilities were in great order and really like the separate bathroom for privacy.
