Camper van visit June 2016

Wonderful peaceful location with lots of walking and cycling opportunities. Not your typical CC site! Wardens extremely helpful and welcoming. Need to carry waste water uphill to empty and replenish fresh water.

Loved it!

We were so lucky to have had a pitch right by the loch and could hear the gentle lapping due to the wonderful tranquillity there. Nature and wildlife were all around and fortunately the  midges had not yet made an appearance. Our 3 dogs loved it too, including our 2 very old dachshunds, who unlike our youngster couldn't walk far but still enjoyed a sniff outside the site gates. The wardens were extremely friendly  (to our 4 legged babe's too!) and we can't sing their praises enough, enjoying some lovely chats together. The roads there are only single track with passing places, but scenery is stunning and well worth the trouble.

Great location but not for old dogs

The location and isolation of the site makes its a fantastic get away. Walking and cycling routes are great. We visited with our 15 year old dog and she loved it however been warned the wardens are not dog lovers. You cannot walk along the loch side on the site with you dog you MUST leave the site to walk your dog.  This took the shine off our visit and won't be returning because of this. I think if you like fishing then they are much more welcoming. Such a shame.

The middle of nowhere

We stayed here for 3 nights in the second half of May. This was our first visit to this site, and we chose it because of its isolation. It is a truly wonderful place with stunning views in every direction. We decided to book a no services eco pitch just for the fun of it, and had no regrets. These were (in our opinion) the best appointed pitches on the site. The walking in the hills is great, and also along the B road running past the site. There were also plenty of opportunities to see the deer and lots and lots of different birds. There is free fishing on the Loch from the bank adjacent to the site. Fly and spinning are the only methods allowed, but conditions were not ideal during our stay, so once again no fish for the bbq. The wardens were also great, and really helpful. Despite there being no toilet and shower facilities on this site they put a lot of effort into keeping the site looking good.

Peace & tranquility

Stayed here one night on our tour of Scotland. Wardens extremely helpful. This is a rustic site, where you are pitched up by the shore of a loch, but you do get electric hook up, water taps & waste disposal (including toilet). If you want to get away from it all in stunning scenery with peace & tranquility it's the one for you. Ensure you take everything with you for your stay as its miles from anywhere, although the wardens do keep a few essentials.

Beguiling

Perfectly described by the CC including the distance to the supermarkets! Pitch prices are no longer cheaper if you choose an economy pitch like us although we did get a stunning view.  Three days of wind and rain, and a glorious fourth with an unbelievable sunset. Deer wander down from the hills in the evening whilst sheep and their lambs mingle with the economy pitches during the later evening and early mornings [wardens clean up the muck]. Great walks - beware of going on the hills because the weather changes quickly and the paths can be boggy - with stunning views. Even walks along the road by the loch are worthwhile as the scenery changes with the weather. We went for a walk along the loch at 10pm in daylight for an hour or so. The Strathaven trail is worth following for an insight into the Clearances. Bird life abundant - two twitchers say they spotted 63 different species. We managed 12 and we're not twitchers. Wardens in a class of their own for being personable. They charge up batteries if needed, sell gas and other basic items. Access is by following roads with passing places but we found these easier than some of the main roads! Avoid the midge season. Quite simply, we were overwhelmed by this site.

Unbeatable

This is unquestionably one of the best sites in the network run by Kenny and Laura who are a great credit to the Caravan Club of how wardens should run a site. Although I have only rated it 3 for families, it depends on what you want for your children, mine (grown up now) would have loved this place as they did not need entertaining but could create their own 'magical place' and this is the site to do that. Our pitch was just a few metres from the waters edge overlooking a magnificent loch with mountains behind. If we looked behind us, there were red deer (usually at dusk) freely grazing. The scenery in this part of Scotland is just magical and well worth the drive from Cornwall.

Four Seasons in 9 Days

Wonderful welcome from the newly promoted  wardens who were coping well with the extreme weather, snow  hail heavy rain high winds and many of the pitches waterlogged but despite this they remained cheerful and very helpful. A wildlife haven unsurpassed on the network. Thankyou Kenny and Laura for a very enjoyable stay.

Heavenly haven

Kenny greeted us as we arrived and showed us the available pitches. We then met his wife Laura, and the "boys". Both lovely, friendly people, who gave us all the local info. After chatting for a bit, we pitched up and admired our view. The drive in, is single track with passing places and the views are spectacular. The Strathaven trail is on your doorstep, cameras at the ready, for red deer, squirrels, pine Martins and birds too numerous to mention. As dog owners, we'd like to point out that ticks are a problem. So please check your dogs after your walks. As per guide book, the site has no toilet block, but does have chemical disposal, motorhome service point and electricity. What more do you need to enjoy life. Thank you Kenny and Laura for making us feel so welcome.

Truly Peaceful

This is my second attempt at leaving a review, no idea what happened the first time.  We planned our trip to Altnaharra based on the location and after reading many of the reviews. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived until we left some 10 days later (end of April) we were made to feel welcome and special by the new wardens Kenny and Laura. We experienced snow, frost, winds (gales?), rain and sunshine, often all in one day and also found we'd pitched our 'van over one of the natural water run offs from the elevated site to the Loch (flooded awning) but the peace and tranquility brought on by staying in this fantastic place stopped us from worrying about it. The scenery is stunning, the fly fishing is dire (well it was for me). So many places to visit, we covered most of the route 500 whilst there. It was just such a lovely, friendly part of Scotland, at one stage we found ourselves checking house prices. There is very little for children to do on this site so I could understand families being frustrated staying here and the single track roads (with passing points) might put some caravanners off but we thought it all added to the natural splendour and pace of life of the area. For wildlife and bird enthusiasts, it's a dream. More red deer than you can shake a stick at and some fairly rare birds such as the black throated diver swimming past the caravan each evening (we were only 5-6 metres from the water's edge). Pine Martens have been seen and photographed actually on the site. Already planning our return trip.
