Good location but somewhat cramped with more than 5 vans

When we arrived we noticed that there were already five vans pitched on site but there was one pitch free. However the tightness of the site meant that we could not reverse into the pitch and had to unhitch a short distance away and use the motor mover. The reason is that an area is cordoned off for "volunteers". These volunteers increased to two during our stay meaning that there were seven outfits using the site facilities. Not strictly CL standards. The overall site is large enough bordering the grounds of the adjoining school and it is somewhat surprising that the pitches have been put so close together at one end when they could have been spaced out giving better standards. That said, walks from the site are really good and the area is beautiful.

Good location but not what we expected

Just spent two nights at Patterdale Hall CL site. The positives: Really easy to find, very friendly helpful estate staff, great walks from the site, short walk to pubs, cafes, shops and pier for boat trips around the lake. The negatives: Site right by the road, not able to relax on the site during the day due to road noise. The site sounds like it is on the edge Ullswater, but actually it's a walk across a road, through the estate holiday cottage area, and then through a couple of fields. It wasn't very nice to sit down by the lake here either as the area is basically a field full of sheep and their droppings. (I am a farmer so quite used to this environment, but I felt even with sheep grazing here this area could be made more family friendly and attractive). We made the most of our time here, but we were pleased to leave after 2 days. Would I go back to this site, probably not. Would I go back to Glenrididng / Patterdale, absolutely.

Walkers and climbers

Location is superb for walking around Ullswater. Don't need to walk all 20 miles, as you can walk 7 miles to Howtown and catch the Steamer ferry back to Glenridding. A beautiful area, but just to clarify, the views are awesome in the surrounding area, not from the CL. Pitches are on gravel, under huge trees - red wood pine type (not sure exactly what, but all we could see out of our window was a massive trunk!). Over the wall was main road, which was popular with motorbike tourers, but quiet at night. CL is in grounds of big old house that belongs to Bolton School - where the private kids do their school trips. We were visiting in school holidays so all was quiet.

Perfect base for exploring

This site is in a lovely location with spectacular views all around and plenty of options for the keen walker or wildlife lover. The estate office staff could not have been more enthusiastic, informative and helpful in making our short stay very enjoyable, so thanks to them for that! The site itself is well organised with the facilities clearly marked and well maintained. Although it is not recommended to follow the SatNav the instructions we were given made finding it very straightforward even in the dark. As we were preparing to leave we were delighted to catch site of two red squirrels darting about in the trees next to our motorhome. What a treat! We will definitely return and set aside more time to explore this lovely spot.

You're My Favourite!!!

We just love this CL and could stay here all year if it was allowed!! If you love walking, then the location is fabulous. Situated at the foot of Grisedale, there are so many walks to choose from, there is never enough time to do them all. We had some blustery weather during our stay but the site is very sheltered so the awning stayed put! John and his staff are really friendly and helpful. Made use of the free WiFi over by the office and the laundry facilities are second to none. Thanks for another great stay.

Another great visit

This is our second visit to this site, and as last time the reception was lovely. We had a storm and high winds our first week-end there but because the site is sheltered it didn't cause us much of a problem. The walking is superb as are the surroundings.Because of the storm there was on-going work in the beck which was fascinating to watch and didn't intrude into our holiday at all.We can highly recommend this site and will definitely be coming back soon,as it is only a hop skip and jump along the A66 for us. Suffering withdrawl symptoms already!!!!!

Charming site

Peaceful and picturesque site. Handy for pubs, shops, walks without moving the vehicle. Good recycling. Very friendly and supportive manager. Perhaps the only tiny negative was that it was difficult to wheel the toilet and water containers on the gravel. We managed to find some phone signal in Glenridding not too far away which was handy for the odd call required but we didn't really miss the TV or internet! Hope to come back soon.
