Exceptional

Mains of Machermore is an exceptional site run by a delightful family. We have just spent a wonderful two weeks on this site after lockdown and were greatly enamoured by the reception we received. Isabel and George are two of the most pleasant people you could wish to meet. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are well organised in keeping everyone safe after the pandemic. Understandably, the toilet block was closed; we would not have used it, had it been open, for obvious reasons. The facilities available were more than adequate with one of the cleanest, easy to use chemical toilet emptying points we have ever seen. Each pitch has water, soiled water drain, electric and level hard standing. It is evident that the site has been planned with much thought, and expense and is a credit to Isabel and George for taking good advice as to the layout. During our stay, we saw a variety of wildlife including the magnificent red kite floating over the site on a number of occasions with a fox strutting past one early evening. It is an excellent base for visiting the many attractions in the area. Notably Kirroughtree and Glen Trool Forests not forgetting the coastal fringe of Galloway with many attractive locations. Seek out Carrick Bay south of Gatehouse of Fleet, Drummore on the Mull of Galloway peninsula and the RSPB reserve at Crook of Baldoon near Wigtown each providing superb walks and lovely scenery. I highly recommend this site to fellow campers.

Returning Home

Just spent 3 nights on this beautiful site booked it on our return home from North Wales. Glad I did what a beauty. Site is in a lovely spot on a working farm Full service pitches and a first class toilet and shower room which was spotless. Isabel made you very welcome on arrival and gave local information. We will definitely be back for a long weekend in the very near future. Good luck with the rest of the season hope ur busy. Mike

Mains of Machermore, Newton Stewart...Just the ticket!

As this relatively new site is situated just over 1/2ml from the A75, and a couple of miles from the town of Newton Stewart, it is ideal for touring the the SW corner of Scotland. To the East lies Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkudbright, to the North East New Galloway, N. West to Glentrool and onto Girvan, to the West Stranrae and the Rhinns of Galloway, and to the South the Machars and Whithorn. The site has 5 large level H/S pitches with EHU, drinking water and a drain at each pitch, a combined shower and toilet in the information room, and free WiFi, and extensive views towards the north in particular. It is located down a narrow but mainly straight single track lane and being close to the A75 there is some traffic noise when the lorries from the ferry pass, but is not sufficient to cause much disturbance in my opinion. Newton Stewart has both a Sainsburys and and an Aldi as well as the usual smaller shops and hotels/pubs. For cyclist, in particular mountain bikers, the 7Stanes MBT Trails are close by at Kirroughtree and Glentrool, and also within easy driving distance are those at Dalbeattie, Mabie & Ae Forests, and all 5 forest have way marked walking trails. The site owners are very friendly and keen to help if needed. They also have a 4 bed cottage on their property which they rent out. We will not hesitate to return as there are many more place in the area for us to visit.

Well Located Site.

Spent two weeks on this site in June 2019 and its an excellent location for exploring this area of Scotland. Being relatively close to the A75 (no problem with noise) its straightforward to travel west to The Rhinns, south to The Machars and east to Castle Douglas and beyond. Newton Stewart is within walking distance and there are great cycle routes accessible in various directions (in addition to the cycling trails in the Galloway Forest). The toilet and shower area is very well kept and the owner, Isobel, is friendly and helpful. Wifi is a welcome extra. We were disappointed not to be able to correct direct to the tap on our pitch as is was too far from the water input and likewise with the drainage, our pipe could not reach the drain so it was back to the using and emptying the tank - it seemed to us that for some pitches the tap/drain was on the wrong side. It was also a major effort to get the awning up as the hardstanding was too coarse to insert and then hold the pegs; nails, a lump hammer, strong gloves and a lot of patience was needed. The grass around the pitch was also quite long and perhaps overdue a trim.

very good site

The site is near the A75 so easy to find road noise did not disturb us. good hard standing, toilets outstanding. You would have a job to improve them. Approx. 20min walk to Newton Stewart. we had booked into he Crown Hotel for a meal so we dove down in camper van easy parking at night. The meal was excellent and moderately priced. Nice place for an evening meal If you wish to park a camper van during daytime plenty of room down by Sainsbury's, Aldi, park in main car park. Nice café near by toilets etc What all c/l should be like well kept at reason price.

Beautiful CL with lovely owners

Just spent 5 nights on this wee gem of a site. We were treated to wonderful views and kept entertained by the lambs in the field next to us. The site is well laid out with immaculate facilities. The shower and toilet are spotless with nice touches like fresh flowers and hand towels. The Chemical waste disposal was clean and easy to use and the bins were emptied every day. The pitches are fully serviced and well spaced apart. The owners Isabel and George could not have been more welcoming and friendly and were very helpful with recommendations for local places to visit - would highly recommend going to the Mull of Galloway as well as Portpatrick. Cannot praise this CL enough and we will definitely return.

Excellent CL

Warm welcome from Isobel on arrival. She and her husband have worked very hard to provide the ideal CL for their guests. Little touches speak volumes about their very hospitable attitude to catering for we caravaners and motorhomes. Others have mentioned them in previous reviews and they didn't go unnoticed by us either! Really liked the individual water and waste facility to each pitch which do make a difference! Thanks again for a lovely stay. Hope to be back!
