Exceptional
Mains of Machermore is an exceptional site run by a delightful family.
We have just spent a wonderful two weeks on this site after lockdown and were greatly enamoured by the reception we received. Isabel and George are two of the most pleasant people you could wish to meet. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are well organised in keeping everyone safe after the pandemic. Understandably, the toilet block was closed; we would not have used it, had it been open, for obvious reasons. The facilities available were more than adequate with one of the cleanest, easy to use chemical toilet emptying points we have ever seen. Each pitch has water, soiled water drain, electric and level hard standing. It is evident that the site has been planned with much thought, and expense and is a credit to Isabel and George for taking good advice as to the layout.
During our stay, we saw a variety of wildlife including the magnificent red kite floating over the site on a number of occasions with a fox strutting past one early evening.
It is an excellent base for visiting the many attractions in the area. Notably Kirroughtree and Glen Trool Forests not forgetting the coastal fringe of Galloway with many attractive locations. Seek out Carrick Bay south of Gatehouse of Fleet, Drummore on the Mull of Galloway peninsula and the RSPB reserve at Crook of Baldoon near Wigtown each providing superb walks and lovely scenery.
I highly recommend this site to fellow campers.
