Great site.

Visited this site in April 2022. The site is very easy to find and has good access off the A75. An easy 30 minute walk will take you into the centre of Newton Stewart. However there are several local walks that start from the centre so you may wish to drive in. In which case you will find that the car parking is free! Sainsbury's and Aldi are also down there along with some good tea shops. The Galloway Forest offers some great cycling and walking and is a short drive away. The pitches on the CL have their own water supply and waste drainage plus there is a spacious shower / toilet room. The site offers open views across the fields. The water pressure is a bit low but this is common on a lot of farm based CL's. Not a problem, just requires a bit of patience. This is a working farm so expect some noise from the sheep and cattle from time to time. Isobel and George are a very friendly couple and are usually around to offer advice on the area. Galloway is a bit of a hidden gem. We hope to return for another visit soon.

April 2022-Young Galloway Belted Bulls on View!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very well-kept CL with its stunning backdrop of the Galloway Hills. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Isobel who even brought mini eggs to all of the campers on Easter Sunday! Bikes are our preferred mode of transport once we have pitched up the motorhome as long as there are cycle paths which are not too rigorous. The location proved great in this respect with an easy ride into Newton Stewart and a little further away Wigtown with its independent bookshops and views of the Solway Firth and also the RSPB Wood of Cree which was more challenging but had spectacular views along the route. Being 'townies' the highlight of our stay was the early evening ruckus of two young bulls in an adjacent field-I'm not sure whether they were warning the other bulls or trying to win the heart of a cow but it was certainly impressive! I would wholeheartedly recommend this site to other club members.

Great CL site highly recommended

Mains of Machermore was our first stay at a CL site in our campervan. Although we have stayed at large sites and camped all over Scotland. The location was excellent, we cycled to the mountain biking 7stanes at Kirroughtree on minor roads (quite hilly) from the site and walked into Newton Stewart (25 mins). Loch Trool and Cairnsmore of Fleet walks as well as cycling to Creetown on Sustran route 7. The hosts were great, Isobel was extremely helpful. The wee hoose was spotless. Pitches had all we needed, fresh water, grey water waste and hook up for each pitch. It was also very quiet, all 5 pitches were taken each night. Being on a working farm there’s lots going on, end of the lambing season as well as 2 mischievous Belted Galloway Bulls. We would definitely recommend Mains of Machermore and hope to be back.

Great little CL

Stayed at this site for 10 nights late Sept, great amenities with terrific views. Isabel & George very helpful if you ever need them. The site is in a fantastic location for visiting all the amazing locations in Dumfries and Galloway, not to mention Newton Stewart which is only a 5min drive away (or a 20 min walk) with all the supermarkets, shops, pubs, tea rooms and various takeaways you could ever want whilst on your hols. The 5 pitches are all well sized and spaced out with electric, water and waste. The "Wee House" is very well kept and has an local attractions information section. 10 days wasn't enough, still so much left to see and do. Big thanks H&K 🙂

Very good site

This site is a real find having excellent road access but being far enough away from the A75 road to avoid noise nuisance. Facilities are very good with serviced hard standings and the shower in the “wee house” a bonus. The owner is very friendly and welcoming.

FANTASTIC CL SITE

First time we have stayed at this site on our way to catch the Stenna Line Ferry to Belfast. It is just off the main A 75 and approx 45 mins from the ferry A pleasure to have visited, the route in is a little narrow but no problems. Site pitches (5no) have all facilities water waste and electric. There is a small toilet and shower block which is spotless and well maintained and could be used as an example in provision for other CL's

A Perfect CL Site

This is our second time at Machermore Farm, two weeks both visits, in bad weather & good. Isabel & George are very welcoming & offer to help if needed. It is a very quiet site with views all round, Belted Galloway cattle & sheep in the adjacent fields. There is plenty of space between vans, water tap & grey waste disposal at each pitch, a superb “Wee Hoose” with a shower etc which accommodates disabled guests. The site is perfect for exploring the area East & West, great walks, cycling on & off road, beaches & local history. For the more adventurous there are the mountains including the Merrick. We love our holidays at this site, finding new places to visit & each day coming back to the peace of Machermore Farm. Thank you Isabel & George. 5*.

But when we arrived we had a great welcome and I wish I could attach the video I took from the caravan door one word Spectacular !!! All hard standings . water close by and all the facilities a caravanner needs I'll not go over what others have said but it all still applies Happiness ! Thanks for having us Mike and Vi

Excellent Site

Due to the current situation with Covid we were looking for a quiet site and discovered Mains of Machermore. This site suited our circumstances perfectly. Centrally located for all areas of Wigtownshire. The Galloway Forest park is only a short drive away. Newton Stewart is a couple of minutes away by car and has all you need for local shopping. The site itself is on a working farm but the noise from the farm was minimal. It has an open outlook and an added bonus of your own water tap and waste on each pitch. The chemical waste is one of the best I have seen on any CL. We really enjoyed our time there and will certainly return in the near future. Mike & Ivy Dodds

Exceptional

Mains of Machermore is an exceptional site run by a delightful family. We have just spent a wonderful two weeks on this site after lockdown and were greatly enamoured by the reception we received. Isabel and George are two of the most pleasant people you could wish to meet. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are well organised in keeping everyone safe after the pandemic. Understandably, the toilet block was closed; we would not have used it, had it been open, for obvious reasons. The facilities available were more than adequate with one of the cleanest, easy to use chemical toilet emptying points we have ever seen. Each pitch has water, soiled water drain, electric and level hard standing. It is evident that the site has been planned with much thought, and expense and is a credit to Isabel and George for taking good advice as to the layout. During our stay, we saw a variety of wildlife including the magnificent red kite floating over the site on a number of occasions with a fox strutting past one early evening. It is an excellent base for visiting the many attractions in the area. Notably Kirroughtree and Glen Trool Forests not forgetting the coastal fringe of Galloway with many attractive locations. Seek out Carrick Bay south of Gatehouse of Fleet, Drummore on the Mull of Galloway peninsula and the RSPB reserve at Crook of Baldoon near Wigtown each providing superb walks and lovely scenery. I highly recommend this site to fellow campers.
