Break down cover

Unless Brittania will give you double recovery and collect a caravan from a site if you breakdown on tour then it is inferior to Mayday. Mayday gives very wide cover and has an excellent reputation so I would not risk the others for at best a very small saving.

We left the AA and moved to mayday as they have (or did have) a maximum combined weight limit.  As we have a discovery and Swift Elegence 580 they would not recover both in an incidient.  They said they would only recover one and leave the other behind?  We also found that the Mayday was much cheaper than the AA.

Have a look at a Nationwide flex plus account, it covers Caravans and trailers - 8 metres in length (including A-frame)  U.K. and European cover, it cost £10 per month but you get 3% on balances upto £2500 so it works out less than £4-00 per month if you get the maximum back. Also gives other benefits, well worth a look at their website for full details and exceptions of course

+1    WW travel insce upto age75 and includes skiing at no extra charge...best I could find that fitted my circumstances/requirements

We use Mayday and got a free site night voucher which was useful for our stay on club sites.

DougS has made some good points.

Earlier this year we looked at options to cover us in Europe and UK and Safeguard  was clearly the best for us as we were also renewing the van insurance.

Initially there appears to be many options but once you excluded the ones that would not recover a van over 7m or a van that was not being towed at the time of breakdown it became a very short shortlist.

I contacted by phone those that appeared to offer the cover I wanted and ended with a choice between Ped Pennant and Safeguard. Safeguard offered the same double journey cover n the UK but also cover the van if not attached to the car which many others,ADAC included, did not.

Also on the first contact the lady I spoke to clearly knew about the issues around such cover and confirmed in writing what the cover would be both here and abroad.

If only either MayDay or Red Pennant gave both Uk AND European coverage in the way that  AllenandJean have discovered with Safeguard.....If only...But neither of them do.

I may check out Safeguard to see if they will also cover caravans stored in France. Whilst we have ADAC at the moment, and are happy that it provides what we want, it's always wise to look for alternative options.  Our current insurance for the caravan is with Towergate, and they will (in certain circumstances which we've accepted) provide repatriation of the caravan for insurance-related repairs.

Hi ValDa, As you know a very very helppful lady provided me with info in English for ADAC.......didn't you!

I just wanted to stress that I have used RP on a number of occasions-and was prepared to do so again-but, having looked into it more closely realised that other providers I had used, for cost reasons, were not going to provide the cover I now needed for both UK and European use and the specific issue of cover when the car was not attached to the caravan.

I thought it would be RP, or possibly ADAC, but thanks to a post on here looked into Safeguard.

P.S.-One of the many odd things that came to light when I looked into this was that Safeguard cover is via the AA but the cover you get is better than AA members do!
