What constitutes an awning?

Hi everyone,

Still new to this game. :-)

We have an IH panel van conversion, 6.4 metres long. If we book a 'Pitch Without Awning' does that mean that we would not be able to use our wind-out awning at all? Forgive me if this seems a stupid question, but I do feel there is a difference between those luxurious and enormous awnings that effectively doubles the size of a caravan, and which takes some time to erect and dismantle, and our simple wind-out affair which just takes minutes to open and strap down and which just provides a bit of cover from the weather.

What is the official take on what is an awning, please? If I book a pitch without awning and then wind my awning out, and perhaps put a windbreak side on, will I be breaking the rules and find myself in trouble with the site wardens?

Many thanks,

Mike.

There are reviews for old site on UKcampsites, nothing after 2005, mentions NT taking it back.

Could be a photo of an image hence questionable date. I've taken similar photos myself one of my parents and 'us' brothers as kids on a camp site time dated 2017. Some 50 year out of date but a cracking digital record of past times now stored up in the 'cloud'.smile

I would doubt the awning on the back of a very short caravan would be a problem on non awning pitches. The rule there is no awning on the side of an outfit. One on the back does not cause a problem provided you have the outfit within the length of the pitch. Possibly best to speak to the warden first though.

I thought NT took it back in around 2006, because there was a big thing in some of local papers

I think that you could well be right about the date, tda. I can only find Reviews for the C&CC site from 2005 and before.

Just to throw in another perspective:-

At Bunree all the lochside pitches are non-awning. As they also are at Garlieston. I thought this was so that people didn't spoil the view of the row behind.

Up at Bunree a couple of years ago, a large motorhome on the front row pulled out the canopy and zipped in the sides. Mmm. Isn't that an awning?

I didn't say anything. I was up there for several weeks and had benefitted hugely from all the motorhomes that went off during the day, giving me an uninterrupted view.

But canopy + sides - isn't that an awning? undecidedsealed

I suspect that the front row no awnings is more likely to be “it’ll blow away” rather than blocking views. As some using StAgnes found a few years ago.

It’s unclear, to me a roll out with a side in is a windbreak. Of course you might only be able to put a side in if the roll out is fully extended. To avoid any issues, until Club clarifies this, best book an awning pitch. Fine at moment, there’s no difference in pricing.

Thats exactly what we do, book an awning pitch, as we have a privacy screen that blocks a side view into our sliding door.Which we often have open. Whether we put out the canopy we still always book awning pitch. Except at Bunree.

 Prefer the lochside pitches.

Yes it is, and should not have been allowed, been to Bunree many times.

This is all really helpful, thanks. I've never done this before either, and I was wondering the same thing. My little Go-Pod has a sun/rain canopy that fixes at the back, but I haven't yet had a chance to put it up. With the Go-Tarp up the total length is around 7m but the Pod is less than 2m wide. I'm going to assume, therefore, that I don't need an awning pitch although I understand it'd be sensible to make sure I get an 8m long pitch.

I wouldn't want to book an awning pitch if I don't need one as I might be taking the place from other campers for whom it's essential.

Er,  I  think  that  might  be  the  wrong  decision,  HeatherPod  !!

My  camper  is  only  5.41  metres  long  and  does  not  need  a  car  obviously  so  I'm  a  small  unit  in  caravanning  terms and  I've  taken  to  booking  Standard  With  Awning  pitches.  I'm  sure  I'm  not  robbing  other  folks  of  a  pitch,  but  a  bit  of  room ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
