Whittaker. We lost our old Victoria plum last year and planted another smaller type in it's place, a "Mirabelle," we nearly lost that too but we think it has survived. We have a damson leaning at 45 degrees so don't know if that will last another summer, we've propped it up hoping for the best.

DSB if you buy an apple now you'll be able to enjoy the blossom this Spring!

Millie, sound like a lovely idea, cherry blossom is beautiful. smile

ps TDA I always get a "chill" when I see Fotheringhay, there is something about the place.

What a thoroughly miserable day out there. It's that low cloud mizzle.

Did get a walk in but not exactly world beating.

Highlight of my day? Doing the ironing. Mrs WN has a frozen shoulder, MiL has a bad back. It's a poor show when I'm the healthiest in the household.😂

Brue we had to do a tour of the site of the Fotheringhay Castle last time son and family were over from NI. Grandson wanted to find the spot where MQofS was beheaded and also where her entrails are buried - blood thirsty little soul!! As son was an archaeologist in a previous life he walked round the site with a plan and map and made an educated guess as to where she was beheaded but as to her entrails who knows?!

i've just done some reading on plum trees, it seems my soil type, which is poor draining heavy clay would be a big problem. I'll investigate a bit further and maybe different fruit trees.

Yes I know what you mean brue. Some places are just so special, so full of history. Fotheringhay Church does it for me, but Tewkesbury Abbey is another place. I have been fortunate enough to see the plate armour that lines the inside of the sacristy in there, complete with the square arrow head piercings......very chilling, sends a shudder down your spine. There’s a few infamous characters buried in there as well, Clarence, he of the “butt of malmsey”, Hugh Despenser the Younger, and of course Prince Edward.

Love our early history, 1066 right through to death of  Elizabeth I. All downhill for me after that. War of the Roses era is my favourite period.

Exciting week here just keeps on giving....scaffolding down, last nights power cut, deciding which new bar of soap to have in bathroom, and it’s the dog’s birthday tomorrow🥳 He’s in a bubble with his Grandma and Aunty, so a fish supper is planned. Pooch can have a sausage if he’s a good boy. Then it’s present opening, a squeaky banana, although we know he will find the wrapping paper more interesting......😂

It can get very grisly indeed Millie😁 Eleanor of Castile is given as having two burial places. Her innards are in a chest tomb in Lincoln Cathedral, but after going on tour (Eleanor Crosses) her cadaver is in Westminster Abbey.😱

My favourite person from history is buried in Lincoln Cathedral .......Katherine Swynford.

I don't do "grisly" TDA I find some places have got a bit too much atmosphere! wink

I'm fond of some places, Tewkesbury I  like a lot, I had ancestors just over the river. I looked up the details you mentioned and the Sacristry door covered in horse armour from the Battle of Tewkesbury.

I read and re-read Anya Seton's book about Katherine when I was in my teens. I still have the very tatty copy somewhere. Such a wonderful love story. When a group of us went to Lincoln when I was doing a Medieval history course many years ago the first thing some of us (mostly the female members if the group) wanted to see was where Katherine was buried. It drove the tutor mad!
