Pub Chain Bans Use of Phones

If it is the case though, and I was only speculating, I think it a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Quite so Steve and quite frankly the tone of the memo is dreadful for a customer facing business. If the problem is indeed about Performing Rights laws that should be explained so the staff know what they are really dealing with. There is a world of difference between the law mentioned and whether customers should be banned from using phones and devices. The crucial judgement should be whether that use is causing real annoyance to fellow customers.

Given the frequency with which some people would like to control other’s activities I’m disappointed to learn of Sam Smith’s dictate. If I want to use a smart phone in a public place, with the caveat that it’s not affecting others, then who has the right to criticise or judge what I’m doing. However, audible use of a phone, through conversations or beeps etc isn’t acceptable because, like smoking, they impose on others.

Maybe, by way of a small exception, we could be permitted a stifled groan when reading about politician’s statements while reading our newspapers on line.

Maybe these laws could be used by the C&MC to control the over loud music & TV that is regularly complained about👍🏻

Most pubs are sufficiently noisy that one would need to go outside to conduct a phone conversation anyway.

It doesn't matter what Sams reasoning behind it is, it's his pub chain and just maybe it's a personal pet hate of his. He seems not bothered if it loses him custom and the public can like it or lump it, go in and abide by his rules or walk on by to the next pub, he's just not bovvered.

Me, as its not a permanent attachment I would leave my mobile as I always do, in the car.

They are his pubs and if he wants to ban the use of phone etc ,then so be it,,  the only major problem with it will be, as usual, the abuse the frontline staff will get from those who think it is their "right?" to be able to do what they want when they want, and "bo**o"ks to othersundecided

I suppose the ridiculousness of the blanket ban on phones means that customers can't pay for their drinks with Apple or Google Pay?
