Site Shops

Just read a review of Wirral CP site that mentions that the wardens are no longer able to sell basic goods from the reception. They told the reviewer that it was a H.O. management decision.

Is this a regular occurrence elsewhere as I've not seen it mentioned before and not being a regular attendee on club sites would not have come across it?

Should imagine it would affect some members more than others.

Assuming a set of wardens want to, instead of struggling to stock and run a shop alone perhaps they should consider doing much the same as is often done abroad.  Forge an alliance and become an offshoot of a local mini market or other local provider.

We have stayed on many a (private) Site that had a van and driver going round stocked with milk, eggs, bread, tea, sugar, cream, cakes.

Ferry Meadows has a daily ice cream van doing the rounds, or it did the last time we visited, last year. We got delicious fresh pizza at Clumber last year, and could have had Fish and Chips if preferred. It’s not all gloom and doom and enforced frugal living😁

Really😁 Live in some lovely locations, often with alternative accommodation included, and get paid for doing it? Granted, there can be some ignorant and awkward so and so’s to deal with, but it’s still not a bad way to earn a living if you enjoy being in the outdoors, sharing your working life with a loved one, and like a good bit of the year off to explore other parts of the World.
Any work will have its down side, but whilst not particularly highly paid, possibly a good vfm choice for some? We had Warden friends who did it for year after year, it gave them chance to live in a place they couldn’t afford to buy a home in, and they lapped it up.

Birdseye and Walls for example, who will often provide equipment FoC if their products are being stocked.

One problem with that:-

On one site we stopped on a few years ago, the Walls fridge was devoid of ice cream in mid September. On talking to the warden it was because Walls would only supply in large quantities and as the site was closing in November they couldn’t risk getting stuck with a load. As it was a Walls fridge they couldn’t just nip to the cash and carry and buy small quantities, it had to come from Walls or they were in breach of their agreement for the provision of the fridge.

Getting into bed with a supplier on C&MC sites would need to go thru official Channels I’m thinking rather that than going full Del Boy👍🏻

KS, yes RA’s really do work👍🏻. They are used as a learning & safety tool. I used them in a previous life, when an accident occurs they are used to learn what to do & what not to do going forward they focus the mind knowing if you get it wrong you are the one responsible. Personally it gave me peace of mind.

Agree Steve. You might also need a back up storage freezer as well as the POS freezer. We had an ice cream vendor at one of our Pools, that blasted thing caused more wastage due to breakdowns than all the other vending machines at our other 15 facilities put together. You can’t take risks with defrosted food. As JK has pointed out, behind the scenes, what looks a fairly innocuous service does have a lot of hoops and hurdles to think about for staff.
