Site Shops

Just read a review of Wirral CP site that mentions that the wardens are no longer able to sell basic goods from the reception. They told the reviewer that it was a H.O. management decision.

Is this a regular occurrence elsewhere as I've not seen it mentioned before and not being a regular attendee on club sites would not have come across it?

Should imagine it would affect some members more than others.

The point is JK being able to buy a pint of milk or an ice cream from reception was once quite widespread and part of the Club offer. It was a nice extra touch on Club sites appreciated by many. Understandable during COVID that such offerings had to be suspended. Now it seems that we won't be going back to pre COVID arrangements on quite a few sites. I think that is a shame and it does diminish the Club offer. I am less likely to run out of toilet chemicals than I am milk! OK it's not the end of the world but what was once an easy option has now become more difficult. The price of a site and the facilities on that site are all part of how we view value.

It might have been widespread but not universal. I guess in the past the running of a shop was very much down to those members who had became wardens for whatever reasons, in a very different era, to organise and stock in their own time. It never was a job expectation, a contractual obligation, just an aside run voluntarily. I remember those whistling milkmen who delivered doorstep milk across every UK town. Times change and the world moves on. Unless the club officially run these site shops then who are we to question what essentially has become a wholly voluntary act, one where responsibility falls squarely on the staff’s shoulders? If the membership want shops I guess the club must evaluate, address the legalities, staff and then remunerate those running them according. That is the time we now live in, not yesteryear.
Yes, there are now a ‘couple’ of club sites which do have site shops run by properly employed persons but size and occupancy of site must determine the economics and validity I would think. I’d reckon for many sites the economics just won’t add up.

You are making generalised disparaging personal comments about genuine contributors to the forum. There are no "browbeaters" on here and people are just questioning what has happened and why it has happened. It is a CAMC matter not about any individual action but I must say I have now learnt quite a bit how these things are managed by CAMC.

Correction-I am supporting an honest hardworking member of the CAMC workforce who happens to be a site manager who in my dealings with them have proved to be excellent people who are dedicated & unbelievably tolerant of those they serve. I will continue to support them(JK in this instance) against those who abuse & exploit the fact he is honourable & respectful to the very browbeaters on CT he helps with his honesty.

I think the demographic of club membership (or at least club site users) must have changed a lot since we gave up 3 years ago! If I was a warden/site manager reading some comments on this, and other threads, I'd be very tempted to say "s*d the lot of you, there's easier ways of earning a meagre living"! surprised

What I fail to understand is, on one hand, the howls of anguish about the loss of "basic, no facility" sites alongside complaints about now having to make the effort to get off site and buy basics at local businesses who are probably desperate for the trade!

No pleasing some folk!  undecided

Sounds great, DD, and an ideal candidate for addition to the "small private sites" thread which has done so much to publicise and promote non club sites! 👍

But do they have a free shop, DD? After all this is what this thread is all about.

Fortunately moulesy life in the real world on sites is really nothing like this and other forums. Unbeknown to them but I've met a couple of the regular critics on this forum and strangely they're nothing like what they portray on hereundecided. Give someone a keyboardyellyell

No, no free shop. As I always look at the broader picture rather than get hung up on one very narrow subject.  To me this thread is more about VFM, even perceived VFM, rather than whether an actual shop is available on site.

WN's OP is very much about provision of site shops.

“We plan for all our Club Sites to offer a simple and consistent range of essential products.

As we work hard to implement this, not all campsites will have products available, so please arrive with all your essentials needed for your stay. You can see which Club Sites have shops through the shopping basket icon on each of the campsite pages”

The above is in this months ccc news letter, so what is the real reason why this club is doing away with them
