Of course Club sites are dear - there is a big superstructure of Head Office staff and Regional managers included in the costs. Family owned sites here in the UK don't carry those costs.

Oh, good! I agree. πŸ‘πŸ»

Err, doesn’t that mean paying the going rate for site fees?πŸ˜„πŸ˜‰

Moulsey

We spend several months each year in Spain France and Croatia and rarely eat out so do  have a good idea of food prices and its not been our experience that Spain or Croatia are cheaper than the UK at the supermarket checkout  and France is much dearer, "eye wateringly" so at times but you may be right about those other aspects such as transport and visitor attractions.

Thanks David, totally agree.

The point I was making was that folk in the UK just seem to accept high prices for a bit of gravel on a site to park their van. Facilities are no better than over there, in some cases they are much worse. There is nothing on the sites like swimming pools, restaurants, etc so why do they charge so much.

The club is getting greedy not only with the prices but with the price bands as well. Public and Bank holidays are only for the best a Friday and Monday so why does 'this' club put the prices up for a couple of weeks. If you take a look at some of the price bands its a joke.

Whether or not the cost of club sites is justified, the comparison with foreign sites which is so often made, is patently too simplistic. We stay in Europe (not on sites) each year; in the last 3 years fortnights in Croatia, Spain and Italy. We have noticed that accommodation, food shopping, eating out, visitor attractions, public transport and more are all significantly cheaper in those places. So why should the cost of sites be any different?

I'm afraid I don't agree with you there M. I find France very expensive compared to the UK. I'm not sure about Italy as I've not been for a long time, last visit was before the euro. Croatia is probably cheaper again not been other than a day trip from a cruise ship. Spain I don't find it as cheap in the supermarkets as back here either, to eat out is cheaper but we rarely do that.

Why should the costs of sites in the UK be so expensive, the club have wardens on the sites that do all the work. Over there its employed staff to do the cleaning, reception, grounds work etc etc.

There is a far lower minimum wage in Spain and over the last 10 years, far higher unemployment. Just one of the factors leading to lower costs.

I wasn't talking about Spain Alan, I was thinking about France. Their sites are half the price of the UK and yet have more things on them (even if you are not interested)  wages are higher there as is the cost of living and the camping season is much shorter than over here.

The salient point Tammy is that CC sites can only be realistically be compared against nearby sites within the UK.

TG & AD - I didn't mention France, tend to avoid that country - too many revolting French folk around! (Strange dress code too - yellow definitely doesn't suit them! )wink

All I can say about Croatia and particularly Italy when we were there in September is that we found bread, fruit and vegetables and cheese in the markets much cheaper and eating in restaurants also.

It would if we ever stayed on them laughinglaughing

It's getting to the stage now that we only use CL's especially since going back to a caravan.

Don't get me wrong we can comfortably afford it, but I have an idea of how much I'm prepared to pay for something and if its more than that then I rarely do.

I wonder what Business Rates, utility charges and income tax/National Insurance, or their equivalents, cost in Europe. Anyone have an idea?

Unlike me. If I can comfortably afford it, I’ll pay it if the product is what I want. We can’t take it with us. πŸ™‚

I choose to caravan in the UK. The simple point for me is that of the types of site that I want I find that, overall CC sites better provide for my wants than the majority of similar commercial sites or C&CC sites. For the majority of the times that I tour I find little price difference between CC and commercial for my chosen sites. C&CC sites are cheaper due to age discount but for me are very much second best for several reasons.
