Bristol Site

Hi everyone,

We wanted to keep you updated of the Club’s plan for a new site in Bristol. The Club bought a site in Clanage Road in 2016 as a replacement for the extremely popular Baltic Wharf campsite because the Club’s landlord, Bristol City Council, had been moving ahead with plans to redevelop the Western Harbour area of Bristol.

We would really like to be able to continue to offer a site in Bristol as we know many of our members love to visit Bristol and have fond memories of staying at Baltic Wharf. It will also have a great economic benefit in the local area with members visiting local attractions, shopping and eating out, as the City is easily accessible on foot and by public transport from the new proposed site. Having a Club Site will also extend the range of accommodation Bristol can offer.

We have resubmitted a planning application for a site on Clanage Road and would love it if any members can help this application by contacting Bristol City Council in support of the proposed new Club Site.

For more information on how to support a planning application visit: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/planning-and-building-regulations/comment-on-a-planning-application or alternatively you can email the Council your thoughts: development.management@bristol.gov.uk

We would be very grateful for your support in this matter and thank you in advance for your help. Support from members could well help to secure a positive outcome. In the meantime members will still be able to stay at Baltic Wharf Club Site in Bristol up until the end of the year.

We will keep you posted on developments and wish you a very happy touring season ahead.

Looks a better place than Baltic Wharf actually for anyone with a dog. Access via footbridge over railway onto riverside footpath?

This is the original available site at the old police horse training centre, where Bristol planning objected on grounds of flooding etc. It's in a good spot, over the road from Ashton Court Park, the Suspension Bridge is close by and the Avon foot and cycle way. About 15 mins walk from the previous site at Baltic Wharf. I would support this application as many will enjoy staying on a site in this part of Bristol, accessible from  the Gordano junction on the M5.

Put Clanage into the search and use the "current" planning link.

Would agree with all that. I lived close by for 14 years and know the location well. Not as convenient for City Centre for walkers, but Baltic Wharf was exceptional in that respect. Excellent location to visit the Balloon Fiesta in August, extensive walking at Ashton Court and a couple of decent pubs in nearby Long Ashton. Good for access from all directions. If we have to lose Baltic Wharf, this is a good replacement.

I have supported the new application and sent an email to several of our friends who we have visited Baltic Wharf with on several occasions

I know the previos aplicatoion was rejected, on very flimsy it seems grounds last time, and hope this latest aplication on the club owned land has addressed them and it succeeds this time

Why are pitches always set at right angles to the site roadways, why not set pitches at an angle (chevron style) makes reversing on to pitch much easier and eliminates vans being pitched opposite so not facing directly into vans opposite. Let’s experiment for future developments.

So that's 4 years rent on a site they knew was closing which could have been spent on developing the new site.

I've heard of bad management but this really takes the biscuit

I am sure the club have made money from leasing the Baltic Wharf site for the past 4 years. It was clearly the best thing to do especially since the planning application for the new site was not granted.

But that's how they have always done it!

It would take more space but I detest vans directly facing each. I do always wonder if the designers have ever stayed on a site. Maybe it would be a good idea for the future if the CAMC loaned their designers a van for a week and sited it so they could see the good and bad points.

Have you seen how short a distance the proposed roadway projects beyond pitch 9?- not even enough room to unhitch the van from the car before manoeuvering into position.

A poky little triangle, with as many pitches as could be squeezed in, but no amenities other than the standard toilet block. Is this the best this Club can do ?

Have they considered what they will do when Bristol city council bans diesel vehicles on environmental grounds and this little patch becomes inaccessible? Have they thought of sites close to public transport further out?

Have they looked at city sites in other countries- like Amsterdam, Strasbourg , Lyon and Nantes to see how other cities do it?

This looks hopeless to me.

Don’t think it’s located in the ban zone, but maybe the pay zone if not Euro 6 compliant?

I only have experience of one of the sites you highlight - Strasbourg. Nice site, but was a bit of a crime hot spot, next pitch had car broken into overnight and cash/cards nicked and some lowlife cut the chains securing bikes on the back of a German van. Security should a big consideration these days when planning a new site.
