Am I an outdated fuddy duddy?

Good afternoon Campers.

I have been camping in tents, a caravan and more recently a campervan for the last 50 years. I was taught and have always believed that it is rude to walk across or through other people's pitches. This weekend, we are staying at Henley Four Oaks and we have recently stayed at Cirencester, Tewkesbury and Moreton-in-Marsh.

I am somewhat saddened that in all cases, people have walked right through our pitches, within feet of our van, to take a shortcut to wherever they are off to.

People are close enough to peer in through our windows.

Am I right in thinking this is rude and inconsiderate behaviour? Or am I just being old-fashioned in these enlightened times?

Do you stay on Sites where non Members are made to wear badges telling you they are such…………..or might it just be a statement based on snobbery and supposition🤔

This is definitely not what was meant and certainly no snobbery involved.

My thoughts are simply that members may have more access to the club site rules as opposed to non members, this then making them easier to follow.

But It still comes down to common decency IMO not to cross pitches.

  1. Not all sites accept non-members.
  2. Not many non-members use club sites in view of the extra fee payable.
  3. Site rules are available to all and displayed on site.

The non-member theory doesn't hold water I'm afraid.

Why should we have to Euro ? Why should the 'offenders' still be allowed to get away with it? The problem is that we seem to have forgotten our manners and have adopted a very selfish attitude to everything. As each generation goes by things will just get worse as the children 'learn?' from their parents. Do we just have to accept that anything goes? I hope not but that is the way things appear to be going, sadly.

Just as an aside, the chances of passers by actually seeing into the caravan / motorhome is not that great if the light outside is brighter than the light in the caravan. The passers by are more likely to see a reflection of themselves in the windows. We see them clearly enough but not the other way around generally speaking. Check this out for yourself.

I tend to agree John. There is a section of society who feel 'entitled' to say or do as they please. I don't know whats caused it, but I think that social media encourages it. Its what 'entitles' a football 'fan' to kick the oppositions goalkeeper, just because his team lost.

Having said that, I see little or no evidence of it on CAMC sites. The only time I can recall someone walking over anothers pitch was at Grafham once. The people next to us were newbies, and had picked up their caravan that afternoon. Together with his other neighbour, we helped them pitch, showed them the safe way to attach the EHU etc. They were very tired from the journey (he hadn't towed before) and had pretty much forgotten everything from the handover (we've all been there!)

When he went to fetch water, he walked over the pitch opposite, and I just remined him of the accepted etiquette. All thats needed is a polite word of advice in these situations, and I have found that caravanners (and motorhomers) are happy to help (like the time when I dropped our caravan on its nose when I over wound the jockey wheel!)

Ok, I sort of accept what you are thinking, but everyone staying, and particularly anyone who might not have stayed before, will get a copy of the Site leaflet.

I don’t happen to think it’s got much to do with rules or such to be honest. I just think it’s the way some folks simply live their lives. Mainly about doing what is best for themselves, and either lacking a degree of empathy for others around them, or simply not caring.

I don’t think there are many non Members found on Club Sites to be honest, certainly not in our decades of visiting, perhaps one or two on Affiliated Sites.

Agree with Tinny, it’s more about empathy and awareness, and this isn’t confined to any particular age group, Membership status, etc…….

Not sure if this is relevant as the posts seem to be more about club sites and rules

We have now started to use more CL s yes they are much smaller but we have found that none of pitch crossing seems to happen whilst on site and you can still converse with people who are staying on the C L whilst having your own space.

Maybe the difference is that C L sites are members only.

Or maybe because on a CL there will be no more than 5 vans - and unlikley to be pitched in rows, so no need to "encroach" while taking shortcuts.

I accept defeat with my theories,

I think we will just go away in our van and enjoy and whilst away just be polite to all, after all it could be one of the posters who walks by.

Happy trips away to all and enjoy.

+1 TDA👍🏻. PJMEG-no one berates or attacks anyone but everyone can & do disagree at times. It’s good to disagree & it’s good to continue a line of interaction. At the end we all move on. It’s best to keep the points salient & with respect or it leads to threads being locked. Some folk disagree with force & others make their points falteringly.

I fully agree with your post.

I felt that I had contributed all I could to the OP with my posts and have enjoyed reading all the views.

I will continue to keep looking at all posts and contribute if I feel that I can maybe add value. 😉
