Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

Have to agree the news is not encouraging but it would be restrictions by authority rather than fear  that would keep us at home for another year..

Have to say the glee that some posters find in bad news reminds me of a conversation with my daughter recently. She works in community mental health and just recently said "Do you know I am sure some people are enjoying this,, its a great opportunity to finger point and the best excuse ever for not doing things folk didn't want to  do anyway"

I agree with some of what your daughter has said the stock answer to any queries from many sources seems to be "because of covid restrictions?"

We live in a semi rural area with many open areas and country side ,but neither the LA nor CC can inspect areas (footpaths/public rights of way), that because of the large increase in use (admitted by both) have in places become quite badly worn and unsafe for some of  those that they were "upgraded to assist?

Really? have you read this, and other threads on the subject?surprised

Said the man who is currently lobbying his MP about re opening the bogs on Club Sites🤷‍♀️

In fairness A&J, your thread is about a comparison of costs in terms of staying here, or venturing abroad, and has strayed as threads like this do. I wasn’t implying individual criticism of anyone, just putting my own priorities out there. We all want to get away, home country or abroad, and the vast majority of us will do it when we feel it’s safe, but it might need some compromise for a long time yet. I worry about what travellers abroad might fetch home, much like my friends in holiday hotspots here might have to endure later in year.

Lifting the lockdown isn’t about being safe, it’s about the NHS being able to cope. It’s up to individuals to look after their own safety, and make the right decisions. Just cross lots of body parts it works this time🤞😁

One of the reasons that Germany (they advise) had a big increase in cases was that their schools had reopened ,

Watch the next couple of weeks in the UK ,if what has been seen in this area in the last week as testing? in schools has shown they are negative? so there is no need to take precautions( ie what social distancing?)

Another factor was doubtless the increasing incidence of th Kent Virus in Europe

Try being selfless and along with 'decide it's safe for us', think also about am I safe for others.

Posted on 14/03/2021 11:17

I think you presume that as soon as able I will be off like a shot galavanting around Europe caution thrown to the wind.

So how would you suggest that I can ensure I am safe for others other than the precautions that are now part of our life and, for me at least, will not be relaxed for the foreseeable?

I don’t think I am fearful. I just put more than myself top of my list that’s all. And I say that having almost lost a beloved family member to something unrelated to Covid, we grab each day as it comes now, having had 18 months of wondering if our lives would ever be the same again. Many like us. Not wanting to tour overseas isn’t a fear, it’s a choice, for lots of different reasons. So implying cowardice might be construed by some as distasteful, unless you know the full circumstances. We merely don’t want to drag our dog overseas, that’s all. Nothing to do with Covid, or we would have crossed the Channel years ago.

I’ll admit to being angry at times with those I see doing things that aren’t helping the situation, but that’s just human nature when living alongside the ignorant, ill educated and totally selfish. Conversely, I am also very happy when I see youngsters enjoying them selves back in school playgrounds, when I talk to excited business owners looking forwards to re opening, when I think I can take my Mum to see her SIL. Nothing more sinister going on here😁

Whilst we are very unlikely to venture abroad with the van this year I would say it is very likely we will fly. Cyprus (one of our probable destinations) only had 12 new cases on Friday so hardly a hotbed of infection.

We do believe that once we've had our second vaccination, we are as probably safe as we will be for the foreseeable future so we need to get on with life.

Soon after we get the go ahead from Boris we are off in the caravan to an area where the risk of Covid is greater than Cyprus but sod it! laughing. Watch out Tinners we'll soon be with you!

That's interesting as I have friends who are dual nationals of an EU country and they have decided it's too expensive to consider a visit to their other home. The costs of self testing, quarantining  etc have bumped up the prices. They are going to wait till things improve and costs come down.

I don't know how the costs for van travel will pan out but I think there might be additional costs to factor in now that Covid has become endemic. We will have to wait and see.

I will indeed watch out because, vaccinated or not, you and other visitors could still be transmitting the disease.

It's my guess we will see another spike in numbers after Easter and into summer. The visitors are already here.
