Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

I will indeed watch out because, vaccinated or not, you and other visitors could still be transmitting the disease.

It's my guess we will see another spike in numbers after Easter and into summer. The visitors are already here.

So are you suggesting that everyone should stay in their own village/town/county/country ( delete as appropriate) for the new few years until the pandemic is finally defeated, if it ever will be.

I can't see the CAMC or any hospitality venue, surviving if everyone took that view.

Whilst we are very unlikely to venture abroad with the van this year I would say it is very likely we will fly. Cyprus (one of our probable destinations) only had 12 new cases on Friday so hardly a hotbed of infection.

We do believe that once we've had our second vaccination, we are as probably safe as we will be for the foreseeable future so we need to get on with life.

Soon after we get the go ahead from Boris we are off in the caravan to an area where the risk of Covid is greater than Cyprus but sod it! laughing. Watch out Tinners we'll soon be with you!

last data I saw 10th March was around 430 daily new cases and increasing rates since 18th Feb ad still rising.

The independent yesterday: "Cyprus on Friday put the brakes on a wider loosening of COVID-19 restrictions by keeping middle school students at home for two more weeks as the infection rate remains high, largely due to the spread of the U.K. variant.
Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou told reporters that results from samples sent to Europe’s disease prevention and control center indicate that over a quarter of coronavirus infections in Cyprus are attributed to that faster-spreading variant."

That's interesting as I have friends who are dual nationals of an EU country and they have decided it's too expensive to consider a visit to their other home. The costs of self testing, quarantining  etc have bumped up the prices. They are going to wait till things improve and costs come down.

I don't know how the costs for van travel will pan out but I think there might be additional costs to factor in now that Covid has become endemic. We will have to wait and see.

I will be very surprised if any quarantining or covid tests will be required for Cyprus as the Greek PM recently stated in an interview with the one of our reporters that they would not need it. Grant Shapps has already said that they are looking in to "Covid passports"

I don't think the cost of van travel will affect us as we won't be taking it on the plane.

Of course not but, as ever, you put your own interpretation on my words just for the hell of it.

Incidentally, you'll find pasties predominate here rather than pies.

I presume there was a valid reason for travel David.

My comments are related to the OP and price comparisons may well go out of the window in these changed circumstances.

Other than that I don't have much interest in this thread. smile

OK so what did you mean, do you just want everyone to stay out of Cornwall?

Looking forward to trying the pasties and the cream teas. Can you recommend any particular maker/venue for either?

What sort of costs are you thinking about?  Ferry is booked and fixed. Sites are similar prices to before, as is fuel and food. Insurance may be a bit more, but as there is still a reciprocal agreement I don’t anticipate a vast increase. A vaccine passport is likely to be part of the covid app and cost free. Perhaps the cost of a covid test or two. Although perhaps if the French want our business enough, they will subsidise the outbound one.😀
