Types of CLs

They come in all sorts of guises but which do you prefer?  My preference is for rural perhaps farm sites.  I don't want toilets and showers or even electric hook up.  I like them clean and most importantly, dog poo free.  Due to my low maintenance list, I also like them cheap.  What's your bag?

We like a lovely location, plenty of room and a decent price. Got that in spades last weekend, the whole of the lower section of Bolton Abbey to ourselves. HS is definitely a bonus in Winter, especially with dogs. Last CL we used had left grass far too long, very unusual for this CL, which we use frequently.

Nellie, by the sound of it, actually we are not too far apart, because I only use EHU fitted sites too!  Medical requirements mean that I need mains electric.

As I said the CC is a very broad church and can cater for most requirements.

I'm sure that we like the same sort of sites, TF. All I was trying to do was point out that others require more than we do, but still consider that they sharing in the ambience of the countyside.

I fully agree with you last sentence, too.

I am an avid CL user and have found the only thing they have in common is that they should only accept 5 units and provide a chemical/waste disposal point. All other facilities and options can vary quite widely. I do not know the actual % of sites with showers, toilets or hard-standings but I do know that those of you who prefer a basic site are well catered for because when I search for a site in my chosen area using the CC map, there are only a small number of sites with the toilet symbol and even fewer have a shower.

It has been suggested that wanting too many facilities on CLs will be their downfall but I think that members not using them will seal their fate. The large commercial sites have been offering large discounts in “off peak” months that have tempted some members away from CLs. These type of site are not for me, I prefer the quieter 5 unit sites but each to his own.Smile

If only that was the case! More and more are allowing more than 5 vans on their sites, unfortunately.

Write your comments here...Agree Nellie. We've stayed on 4 this year that have exceeded the 5 rule and as you know most of our touring this year has been abroad, so 4 out of 8 Cl's is a high proportion.

May I be allowed to comment, because all my Caravanning is overseas these days - usually on small sites. I am an outsider. Sorry.

But it does strike me that more and more contributors on here are rather obsessive about the figure five.  I enjoy small sites regardless of how many other people are there, but it does seem that some people get too easily upset if the magic figure is not met.

Tin hat time?

I must admit that one of the CLs we visited this year also had six units for three or four nights during our two week stay. The site had plenty of space and this did not spoil our stay, in fact we would return again if visiting that area.Cool

No tin hat needed for me ET, if the site is large enough to provide plenty of space between units I am willing to turn a blind eye, especially in high season.Cool

2 of the sitesthat had more than 5 on were quite large sites where an extra van didn't impinge on privacy etc but there were other cls in the area that may have been deprived of business. One site that accomodated us for just 1 night en route would have seen us move to another cl such was the overcramping if we had been staying any length of time. It just makes life easier if you know there's only going to be 5 on site.
