Be careful what you say when you review a CL

We stayed at the Gamekeeper's Cottage CL near Alsagers Bank in Staffordshire in August. It was in a lovely location with splendid views, and had EHU and water to all pitches. The price was also very reasonable for the facilities available. Yes there were some relatively minor access issues, including sloping approaches to the pitches, but not anything like as bad as one reviewer had said - and until then not something which most people had rated as a problem. As a result of his review, bookings collapsed to the point where - taking insurance into account - it was no longer viable for them to keep the CL open. It closed for good at the end of the season.

When posting reviews, please could you think carefully about the effect your review might have on future bookings. Try to concentrate on positive aspects where possible (in this case lovely location, great walks in the area, a five minute walk to an excellent pub, water points on all pitches) rather than get carried away with perceived issues with the CL. Sadly we will be unable to make a return visit to this CL.

My Mum used to say " If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all " I follow this advice when writing reviews.

So then you'd never post a negative review? Are you saying you only write a review if you have had a good experience and never when you've had a bad one? That might be seen as honourable but not very useful to others who look at reviews.

Write your comments here...Sorry I gave the impression that I write only positive reviews. I neither read nor write them.

How do you know if a review is positive or other wise of you don't read them?Undecided

You have said that you neither read nor write reviews, yet this is contradicted by the fact that your profile states that you have indeed written a review!

So, if you are following the advice that your Mum gave you, you have had one good site visit, the rest you have kept mute about, so one deduces that you perhaps are not enjoying your time on sites as you have nothing to say! Happy

Ah!  the review of summer 2013. We stopped at Uttoxeter for an overnighter and it was so grim I felt moved to ignore my Mum's advice. Having written my review I looked at a few others about the site. Half agreed that it was not great  and half thought that it was wonderful. That's when I stopped reading or writing site reviews. My very favourite site is New England Bay and I was chatting to the warden one day about the immaculate condition of his grass which is munched by the local rabbits. He says he gets bad reviews about rabbit poo ,the size of the pebbles on the beach and the remoteness of the Mull !      I don't do reviews.

I do reviews for CLs and Private sites, mainly to share ideas with others on here who I know like to tour and visit similar places as we do. We do a lot of research for ourselves before we commit to visiting new CLs and private sites, and despite using mainly CLs, we have never been badly disappointed. But some of the places we love, others would truly find issues with, and would hate! Very personal thing a review, can only base it upon personal preferences really, and each one is a snapshot in time. You do get some weird reviews though, not just on here, but other review sites!

bob, you said " I gave the impression that I write only positive reviews.  I neither read nor write them."

I took the "them" to refer to "positive reviews."  which is why I asked the question, and hence others did too and so all the likes. Presumably you were referring to all reviews, then?

Am I missing something here? Doesn't the club inspect a CL at the beginning to see if it's fit? Then the pitches must be accessable/useable? Why doesn't the club support it's Cl's by not allowing clearly false reviews. I have seen some motorhome & caravaners that shouldn't be on the road. They can't revearse to save there life. And need gates at least three times the width of the van to get through without hitting anything. The CL's shouldn't be blamed for the poor skills of the drivers! As the one in the OP seems to have been.

Agreed with all except the first bit. Once the club starts attempting to judge which reviews are "false" (no doubt from an office, having never seen the site in question), you quickly end up with the situation with the so-called "friendly club", where there are some things (e.g. the number of units) that you dare not mention as, if you do, you know that the review will not appear.

Both the owner and another caravanner staying there had comments to make on the reviewer. The owner thought he knew who it was, and described him as an "old man with a motorhome". One of the caravanners suggested that he did indeed need to attend a manoeuvrability course.
