Are CLs really members only

What is the official line? On and off over the years I have noticed the Guidance Notes issued by the various government agency have, to say the least, been inconsistent. I see the Government itself has now produced the latest note which can be read >here< and it says,

“Non-members are allowed to stay on the site if your club and the landowner agree to it.”

Do CL owners have a choice in the matter or does the Club insist on members only as a condition of giving the certificate?

Thank you all for your comments and  for contributing to this discussion. The Caravan Club has a fantastic network of CL Sites and we are really pleased that we are able to offer these sites to our members. Operating the CL network is a privilege offered to The Club on specific conditions which include that they are intended solely for Caravan Club member’s recreational use only. As such all CL Sites are member only, without exception, and this is a requirement of the exemption in  (commitment we have made under) the 1960 Act of Parliament. We clearly and frequently communicate to CL owners that they must ensure their sites are member only, and this is also repeated on each and every annual  CL certificate we issue.

All CL owners are asked to check membership numbers and can contact The Club if they have any concerns. We have a dedicated CL team who work hard to support CL owners, and a new service we introduced last year allows CL Owners to text The Club to check that a membership number is current and valid; this works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ensuring that CL Sites remain for the benefit of only members is something we take very seriously, and we hope that members too can protect their network of CLs, firstly by quoting their membership number on booking and remembering to take their current Club cards to CLs when they stay, but by also reporting any concerns over non-members for us to investigate. We cannot be everywhere at all times which is why we ask members to bring anything untoward or any concerns to our attention via the clresponse@caravanclub.co.uk mailbox.

I hope this clears up any confusion and that members can continue to support our wonderful CL Site network and the hard work and dedication of our CL owners.

Thanks Ted and Rowena, it is good to know it is definitely a member only perk and you have a method of checking, many of us doubted this including me who has only ever been asked for membership once in 20 plus years.

Write your comments here...We only use CL sites in the UK and never go to club or commercial sites.  Every single CL owner since 1976 has asked us for our memebership number when we have made our booking.

Blimey Qq66, that is some going. I may have offered my card when checking in but I have definitely only ever been asked for it once. I can even remember the CL which is still up and running.

Most of the CLs we book on the phone do ask us for our membership no.although a few do not. I do however offer my number when making my booking.

Thanks Ro for giving the definitive explaination of CC membership requirements re CLs.

Am at present on a CL in Lancashire where I was requested to register in a log book when paying.. name, address, phone no. & membership no. etc. No problem as far as I was concerned! The funny thing was that the owner did not as to see my membership card, though.

I don’t know what the official line is but imagine that buried in the terms of their exemption from local planning restraints is a need for them to be used by members of the holding certificate only. I’d not be the least surprised to find non-members on a site, however. Many CL owners do not check for membership cards and would be reluctant to turn away business.

Write your comments here...Whilst I have had to quote my membership number when booking I can't remember the last time I showed it to a CL owner.

I regularly turn away business as I only want Caravan Club members on my site. My insurance covers members only and it helps screen out potential problems. We find that people prepared to pay their membership into a club, are more respectful of the rules.

If you want to come onto my site then you have to be a member, simple!

When I started 18 years ago I would admit that when we asked for membership numbers as part of the booking process a lot said that they had never been asked before and often had to go upstairs to find their cards. These days almost everybody has their number to hand. All numbers are checked against the CC database and so far this year 59 bookings and 59 valid numbers. I did get 1 email enquiry last week from somebody who did not provide a number on their initial enquiry. I asked for their number and they said they weren't members and apologised for wasting my time.

As a caravanner (only for 4 years) I've stayed on 21 CLs and have been asked for my number for at least 10 of the sites.

Given the numbers that say they have never been asked you begin to wonder whether there is some sort of parallel universe in operation as, from both sides of the fence, it's not my experience!
