Are CLs really members only

What is the official line? On and off over the years I have noticed the Guidance Notes issued by the various government agency have, to say the least, been inconsistent. I see the Government itself has now produced the latest note which can be read >here< and it says,

“Non-members are allowed to stay on the site if your club and the landowner agree to it.”

Do CL owners have a choice in the matter or does the Club insist on members only as a condition of giving the certificate?

Thanks wildmere, oakapple and kellysdad for posting.

Rutlandwarrior there are about a dozen to a score of CL owners who have in the past posted on CT.

I am surprised a few more CL owners have not commented on this thread. Low profile or what?

Write your comments here...don't think there are any cl owners on ct. From the topics and discussions I have read it seems to be the same few people posting across all topics.

rw, there are at least 10 CL owners that post on CT on a fairly regular basis. How do I know.....well, we've visited 7 or more of them.

In my experience of running a CL for 28 years we have always asked for membership numbers and can even check with the CC if we are not sure about the member as there is no photo ID they can be borrowed and misused. We only take 5 caravans and abide by the CC rules. Why would I want to take someone who isn't a member and why would I put the certificate at risk for a total stranger? I am not insured to take more than 5 and a non member would certainly not be covered by my insurance on my site.

Well said oakapple, It's a great shame that so many people join the CC only to be hell bent on bending the rules to suit their own selfish ends.

Can't agree more. Even worse are those that think they can use the CLs without joining.

I agree totally. Guess they're the ones, too, that think that speed limits are for others and just ignore them.

I'd fully agree.  We always ask for a CC membership number when people book with us by phone or email, and we will likely change our on-line booking system this year so that we can take the CC number.  If we are in any doubt over a member's details we can check the CC membership number is valid directly with the club using a 24-hour Text Message facility.  This new innovation is pretty handy, although probably not as widely used as it could be.  All the signage for CL's states clearly that it is 'Members Only' and the certification process also makes it clear that the CL owner is responsible for checking that visitors are members.
