It's funny but anything with high electricity used inside the caravan is fine, for example no one complains about air con units, hair dryers, all that can be justified but as soon as it's in the awning...

Anyway just going to enter this competition, a tumble dryer for the awning!!!

What advice have you got?

Posted on 18/05/2018 00:28

Done up three, two sold at a profit, third one still in use by us, now 34 years old. How much do you want to spend?  How old is it? What are your needs?

The answers you get to these questions will indicate whether or not doing an old caravan up will suit you, or if you might be better off buying a second hand one that has more of the features you require. How you intend using it is relevant as well. UK, abroad, with family, with pets, short holidays, long holidays, what are you towing it with, what kind of sites do you use, etc........

Make a list based on answers to some of these questions, and you have a basis to design/alter an old van and make it just what you need.  On older vans, sometimes the build quality is very good, and you have a sound base to make a relatively cheap purchase into something worth keeping. Older vans are usually much easier to carry out repairs and renovations on yourself, especially if you are good at DIY. Some aspects are a bit more technical, and might need signing off as safe by an expert, for example fitting new gas pipes.

In answer to Corners, yes I've sold the apartment and yes I mostly flew. I did read some years back that flying produces a carbon footprint slightly less than a driver in a Ford Fiesta but I do agree that we should all be travelling by bullock cart. wink

Would people still heat the awning if their pitch electricity was on a metered supply?

Posted on 18/05/2018 12:26

Oh no! Not this old chestnut again, surely?

Look, we don't use an awning heater,  we don't even have a full awning. But could someone please explain to me why, for instance, it's OK to sit in your van with the heating on at, say 2kw, but not to have both the van and awning heating on at 1kw each?

Why are some folk so concerned that someone else might be using a few pence more electricity than themselves? It's just a nonsense IMHO ( speaking as someone who uses as little as possible, that is! wink)

It is metered, just not individually. Hence the reason why you have a division between those happy to use anything that's there, and those who are concerned that rising usage of a commodity might be reflected at some point in a rise in pitch price for everyone, regardless of how frugal personal usage might be.

Touring is our cheap holiday, personally we need cheap site fees to keep us interested and still doing it, on a normal year we might be away 3-4 months over the year. We holiday in other ways as well, so happy not to commit to an expensive outfit, use basic sites. For others, they will have made the decision to spend a lot on an outfit, happy to pay the fees at sites they like and want, regardless of what they ad up to, including metered electric. It's an individual preference.

Edit: I was answering Johns post M!wink

As long as the cart was made from wood taken from sustainable forestry & you collect the Bullock’s waste to ensure it’s recycled to offset the methane production👍🏻😊

Yes, after having paid thousands for my outfit and wanting to enjoy my holidays fully, what's a few more extra pounds?
