So what did the Club ever do for Motorcaravanners?

It’s a while now since the Club was renamed, to reflect that there are lots of motorhomers among Members - but apart from the name change, what has and does the Club plan to do to cater effectively for motorhomers?

Well there has been a programme of improving motorhome servicepoints, to provide drive-over grey water drains, but at the club Site I most recently stayed at there was no lighting at this service point (unlike the others) so using it after dark (and it was dark at 4.30pm that day) was a matter of struggling with a torch.  But I haven’t noticed anything else specifically for motorhomers and in response a suggestion that the Club should develop overnight parking stops for motorhome like the Aires on the continent, I read somewhere that the Club’s only response was to wonder whether a discussion about whether this was a more appropriate thing for the Government rather than the Clubs to be considering.

CAMC is of course a commercial operator of full scale caravan sites and jolly good they are too but these cater primarily for people who want to stay for quite a number of days, like caravanners do, while lots of motorhomers (certainly on the Continent) make lots of use of more basic overnight parking, to stay for one or two nights only and then move on.  Some motorhomers do use their vehicles like caravans and stay on a Site for a while but lots more enjoys their holidays by keeping moving along.

For holidaying in this mode motorhomers don’t need a toilet block, resident staff and manicured grass around them every night; on most nights they don’t need much more than parking, a supply of drinking water, a drain for grey water and somewhere to empty the chemical toilet.  CAMC should be just as capable of building good Night Halt locations as it is at building full scale caravan sites - and operating them profitably.  There are lots of Aires on the continent which charge good money (and use barrier entry operated with credit cards etc) as well as the free ones provided (as a tourist facility and an attraction) by many local authorities.

There may be an argument for local authorities to build Aires as tourist attractions etc but there is also, quite separately, an argument for CAMC showing initiative in building a network of Aires in UK as a service to it’s Motorhome Members.  I think a network of CAMC Motorhome Nightstops would compliment the network of Club Sites and serve to promote them too - for example each Night Halt could easily display advertising material about nearby Club Sites.  And motorhomers who use Aires also tend to use full scale caravan sites periodically as well, for example to have a ‘laundry day”.

Isn’t someone on the Club’s staff or committees already thinking about this avenue of development - and if so can we hear something about their ideas?

I guess by the law of averages they would get one out of 155 or more right at some time.  Not sure I would want EHU around a dump.  Water and electricity don't mix well.

What a strange reply again?

I'll answer your question Corners.  Yes.  But how about another solution with no need to alter the sites.  Make the first night of any stay on any pitch half price.  Those that only want one transit night benefit as do those staying longer.  Don't get bogged down with the figures, maybe a reduction of a third on the first two nights would work better.  Perhaps no reduction on Friday and Saturday nights may be a needed restriction, etc.

The way you attempt to answer posts is almost as good as most jokes from those in govenment who also seem not to have any real answers wink

I'd also use them, but did qualify to M that the main issue for us touring here is the booking culture and how one has to be much more 'prepared' to commit to a planned tour.

having to arrive at a certain place due to the booking puts pressure on potential dawdling....similarly, having to leave at the end of a booking is an issue if we wanted to stay longer...

ok, perhaps in off season, getting these bookings altered to extend or shorten might be doable (but more hassle than I'm interested in) but as we really only use the van here in 'good weather' (and sometimes New Year) a lot of sites are booked which makes alterations even less desirable.

now, if the transit pitches really were for passing trade......no booking, or book a max of one day in advance and max duration of one/two nights etc...they would serve the purpose many are advocating....making impromptu touring easier, yet still have a pitch guaranteed on arrival.

no leccy, large enough for caravans too, £12 max a night?

Ps, Mickey....I'm advocating max no of nights on these not min number which you seem so concerned about. I was thinking about fast turnover...and a decent price (not penny pinching) for a 'transit-style' pitch...

Want your cake and eat it? The club already has a lack of much needed pitches across the network we are told, your suggestion would be lost revenue, sites which are full are full. May be those few sites with capacity are those which some, not me, class as in the wrong place for motorhomers.

When we travel abroad especially outside France and Spain shopping is an issue until we get used to things, initially in Croatia we struggled with  food labels in CroatIan and we're very glad to find a branch of Lidl.  We are not "Bear Grylls" types and don't see lack of shopping as a plus when choosing a site .

If I am visiting remoter parts I check for supermarket availability. It matters not if it is 20 miles away if it is near somewhere we are likely to visit on our stay. Usually there is somewhere within 10 miles.

I think I would struggle with Croatian but as we eat little pre prepared food could probably manage. (Zapečeni grah, Tinned rajčice, kobasica) wink I don't speak any Greek or Maltese either beyond please thanks, hello etc. French is OK though for shopping in France. It has amused me several times in the past that when in a Belgium market a trader has pretended not to understand a French person, but when the trader's English is poor seem to understand my French perfectly.

No booking with a guaranteed pitch on arrival. laughing

If a pitch is large enough for a motorhome and provides the 6m safety clearance it is automatically large enough for caravans. No leccy to suit a minority who don't want eleccy and all the space, and other facilities for £12 When I suspect that it costs us as a couple £10 for these facilities alone? Get thee to a nunnery .... I mean CL

No booking with a guaranteed pitch on arrival.

Now that really IS a combination of Harry Potter stuff and changing the Laws of Physics!

How can a pitch be guaranteed to be available, if more people have arrived before one than there are actual pitches in existance?

I have seen a line up of more than one Turdis at a National Rally.  Still had a queue.

Don't see how a pitch could be guranteed unless you booked. Currently if I just turned up and a site was full and they had a late night arrivals area, I would hope I would be allowed to use it for the night without hook up if so desired.
