Would It Work ? – Open for sensible debate.

With so many people complaining about the frenzied booking when the system opens in early December I thought I would try to suggest a solution for those not able to book so early due to work or other restrictions. Whilst I don’t fall foul of the system so much now, I have done in the past when works holiday dates could not be booked until well into the new year and especially when trying to include a weekend.

Would it work if every site allowed only 50% of their pitches to be booked at any time from the December booking date with the remaining 50% not being bookable until no more than 2 months before the planned visit date?  Most people, I think, should be able to work around this for planned main holidays. This should accommodate those that must fully book their year in advance and those that cannot.

I’m sure, (he says, tongue firmly in cheek), that the IT department could tweek the online booking program to accommodate this.

Whether it is a workable solution I don’t know, it’s just a germ of an idea to solve what is a problem for many members but remains fair to all. There may be an obvious reason why it wouldn’t work that is staring me in the face but I haven’t seen it. I’m sure someone will point it out if there is one.

Contrary to what some are against and reject out of hand, I think deposits would be a good idea. I cannot understand why some people are so against them unless they are seriously worried about losing them. The site fees have to be paid at some time so why not spread the cost?  There are many things in life that require a deposit, caravans and motorhomes being a good example.

With the current system there must be some members who book very early but know that they may well change their mind closer to the date, although I doubt that any would admit to this. I personally know one couple who regularly cancel bookings, not necessarily at the last minute but nonetheless may have deprived someone else from being able to book and they have to consequently look for an alternative site. Non-refundable deposits would reduce this sort of behaviour I believe.

I guess I will receive some flak but it would be nice to have a sensible debate.

I suspect the club have booking statistics and are also aware of serial "cancellationists" so it would have it's limitations?

Like I said, I'd have taken a letter and a black mark on the chin, nothing I could do, the fault appeared on the car the day before the planned weekend break and I couldn't get it repaired in time due to an overloaded dealer. It was an opportunity though to test what the warden had told me. It's a loophole that would no doubt be closed by the Club if they see it happening a lot, but it does exist, for now.

Members get around the late cancellation 72 hr window by not cancelling their booking, but merely changing the dates for the same site. This can be done the day before a member is due to travel by going online and amending the booking, selecting new dates at a later time. Then, the new booking is cancelled resulting in no letter or black mark from the Club. How do I know this, a warden told me how to do it :)

it's not a secret, doesn't everyone know this? It was talked about in the club magazine and again it's allowed within the rules. And it could be seen as a perk of club membership. I can't travel tomorrow as (insert reason here) but I'll go away next week or whenever.

Of course if it was a secret everyone knows now!

Well, everyone that reads this thread on this forum, which in the grand scheme of things, is a somewhat small portion of the membership. So the 'secret' is unlikely to become an epidemic.

I didn't know about the 'loophole' until said warden mentioned it, but I didn't for one moment think it was a completely unknown phenomena.

It does make a mockery of the 72 hr rule though, which is hardly a threat for those in the know. Wink Wink

I am very happy with the system as it is.  For health reasons i don't book months ahead so i just work around what is available.  More importantly i would hate to pay a deposit because there are times when i have had to cancel at the last minute, i'd much rather not.

i'm sure i'm not the only one in this situation.

So if you cancel you lose th deposit. Like most other holidays. Simple!

Most of those complaining about the present system say that they cannot book those sites that they want due to the sites being fully booked at weekend at certain times of the year. No matter which system booking honey pot sites at weekend will remain a lottery.

If booking is not permitted until a few months before the dates to be booked it might ease the process as for weekenders but not for folk, like me who insist on 'all the ducks in a row' site wise before going off for 6 weekss or so. It would mean my booking a tour of 8 or more sites piecemeal rather than all done and dusted in one session. Not something I would wish for and particularly doing so whilst away in the caravan as well.

The deposit system is not a problem for me.

The CCC require a 25% deposit on booking with the balance on arrival whilst some private sites are are up to 100% with booking.

I'll go with the flow. cool

Weekdays at the times of year I travel are rarely a problem. I have been surprised however that some sites are full at weekend outside main school hols.

We are away 120 nights and I suspect that 100 are on CC sites. If we say that is £24 a night for a couple then a 25% deposit would be £600. Not a problem I suppose but something l would prefer not to do. I do pay deposirs on commercial sites.
