Would It Work ? – Open for sensible debate.

With so many people complaining about the frenzied booking when the system opens in early December I thought I would try to suggest a solution for those not able to book so early due to work or other restrictions. Whilst I don’t fall foul of the system so much now, I have done in the past when works holiday dates could not be booked until well into the new year and especially when trying to include a weekend.

Would it work if every site allowed only 50% of their pitches to be booked at any time from the December booking date with the remaining 50% not being bookable until no more than 2 months before the planned visit date?  Most people, I think, should be able to work around this for planned main holidays. This should accommodate those that must fully book their year in advance and those that cannot.

I’m sure, (he says, tongue firmly in cheek), that the IT department could tweek the online booking program to accommodate this.

Whether it is a workable solution I don’t know, it’s just a germ of an idea to solve what is a problem for many members but remains fair to all. There may be an obvious reason why it wouldn’t work that is staring me in the face but I haven’t seen it. I’m sure someone will point it out if there is one.

Contrary to what some are against and reject out of hand, I think deposits would be a good idea. I cannot understand why some people are so against them unless they are seriously worried about losing them. The site fees have to be paid at some time so why not spread the cost?  There are many things in life that require a deposit, caravans and motorhomes being a good example.

With the current system there must be some members who book very early but know that they may well change their mind closer to the date, although I doubt that any would admit to this. I personally know one couple who regularly cancel bookings, not necessarily at the last minute but nonetheless may have deprived someone else from being able to book and they have to consequently look for an alternative site. Non-refundable deposits would reduce this sort of behaviour I believe.

I guess I will receive some flak but it would be nice to have a sensible debate.

"Frenzy Day" is not a problem to us either - we just ignore it!

I do wonder though, if the club took, say, Rowntree, Chatsworth and Baltic Wharf" out of the on line booking system, whether there'd be any frenzy at all. Are there any examples of other sites that get anywhere near full bookings on that one day?

On the ocassions I've used frenzy day I've found I can't even get a slot on line til it's too late. We're not all on fast broadband! I don't know what the phone bookings are like? When Baltic Wharf is out of the equation there will be more pressure elsewhere.

Probably only for specific periods such as bank hols, Henley Regatta, Southport Flower Show or Air Show etc, Yorkshire Cycle Race.

As said, I'm in a minority :-)

Looking at it from another angle, rather than what is best for individuals and their needs versus what is good for the Club by encompassing a broader range of needs, would bringing 'booking' day (I'll refrain from using frenzy day) forward to the end of August be a total disaster. This would open up opportunities for anyone looking to try and secure more advanced bookings, and would also attract repeat bookings for those just coming to the end of their summer hols (catching those who are suffering post holiday blues rather than those thinking more about the pending Christmas)

I guess this is what happens, bookings for events and weekends.

The only 'speculative booking' that I have made was probably about 7 years ago when I still booked a month before a tour and that was a CC Braithwaite Fold as was. In February I noticed vacancy for 5 or  6 nights in September. We had not planned September tour. My intention was after our April/May trip I would see if it would fit in with a tour with consideration to what areas we had recently visited. If not I could release it then.

It was after this time that I started booking up in December as I kept finding an odd site here or there that I could not book on the specific dates that I required.

With over a hundred Club sites showing vacancies the coming Saturday, and  29July is surely peak season, what is all the fuss about booking many months, or years, ahead ?

Can you tell me now, or perhaps reassure me, that the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday 2018, will be available at Chatsworth if I wait until a week or so before, I think about getting it booked?

You can't can you?

Which is why the C&CC Bakewell have got the booking.

Interesting.

I'm the same, I enter sporting events and after my entry is confirmed, I want to secure my accommodation. If the CMC allowed forward booking further in advance than they currently do, I'm positive I'd use the club sites more. As with you, deposits don't bother me, happy to pay them to secure the pitches.

Yes, the Club has its way of doing things and it works better for some, not so good for others and I accept their way but it does restrict my use of Club sites, so I look elsewhere.

I'm not entirely sure why the Club don't allow bookings further in advance prior to frenzy day, does anyone know the reason?

Would it be conceivable to be able to book up to two years in advance on frenzy day? So this December, a member can book anything in 2018 and 2019, and come December 2018 a member could book for 2019 and 2020 etc etc. What effect would this have on members booking habits?

2018 and 2019? Some of us are of an age that deciding if a BOGOF at Sainsbury's is going to be worth it is a struggle.
