Would It Work ? – Open for sensible debate.

With so many people complaining about the frenzied booking when the system opens in early December I thought I would try to suggest a solution for those not able to book so early due to work or other restrictions. Whilst I don’t fall foul of the system so much now, I have done in the past when works holiday dates could not be booked until well into the new year and especially when trying to include a weekend.

Would it work if every site allowed only 50% of their pitches to be booked at any time from the December booking date with the remaining 50% not being bookable until no more than 2 months before the planned visit date?  Most people, I think, should be able to work around this for planned main holidays. This should accommodate those that must fully book their year in advance and those that cannot.

I’m sure, (he says, tongue firmly in cheek), that the IT department could tweek the online booking program to accommodate this.

Whether it is a workable solution I don’t know, it’s just a germ of an idea to solve what is a problem for many members but remains fair to all. There may be an obvious reason why it wouldn’t work that is staring me in the face but I haven’t seen it. I’m sure someone will point it out if there is one.

Contrary to what some are against and reject out of hand, I think deposits would be a good idea. I cannot understand why some people are so against them unless they are seriously worried about losing them. The site fees have to be paid at some time so why not spread the cost?  There are many things in life that require a deposit, caravans and motorhomes being a good example.

With the current system there must be some members who book very early but know that they may well change their mind closer to the date, although I doubt that any would admit to this. I personally know one couple who regularly cancel bookings, not necessarily at the last minute but nonetheless may have deprived someone else from being able to book and they have to consequently look for an alternative site. Non-refundable deposits would reduce this sort of behaviour I believe.

I guess I will receive some flak but it would be nice to have a sensible debate.

OK. Nothing wrong with your opinion and as the OP asked for a sensible debate, so I'll be rational :-)

I've booked two long weekends in 2018 and 5 a five night break, the long weekends are in March and the 5 nighter in April. 8 months away.

The C&CC have secured approx £300 of my money because I can't book for next year with the CMC. If I wait until frenzy day, there's no guarantee I'd get the bookings and by then, the C&CC might not have availability at the sites close to where I want to be. One of the weekends is Easter.

I like Club sites, nothing against them at all, it's just for me, the inability to secure forward dates forces me to find alternatives and yes, I'm probably in a tiny minority and the current system suits most members fine. Having the ability to book alternative sites either commercial or with the other club overcomes the problem so really, I haven't got a problem. However I'd happily spend more with the CMC if there was a little bit more flexibility, not much, just a little bit :-);-)

I think I would rather keep £300 in my accountwink

Is this an oblique reference to speeding on site?

Anyway, point laboured enough I think. Reckon I might go to the AGM this year, just for the craic, and it's not far to travel. Anyone been before? Is there free beer/wine/nibbles or is it buy your own tea/coffee/hobnobs

Any questions you think I should put to the floor? Or should I just discretely lob peanuts at our Grenville? tongue-out

I could be awkward and ask why there's a distinct lack of sexual equality & diversity on the board of directors wink

We tried mid Jan 2016 to book a week at Chatsworth for mid March. Only able to book Sun-Fri. On arrival told the Warden the prob. Was told highly likely there'd be a cancellation for the weekend & I'd get 1st option - which indeed turned out to be the case.

Glad you got what you needed aaj, not always easy at that site. I am always rather puzzled by just how popular Chatsworth Site is to be honest, but guess it's proximity to some big urban areas (Sheffield, Derby etc...) make it good for long weekends, as well as those wanting longer holidays. Perhaps it's being very familiar with the place that doesn't make it a favourite, done the house, gardens, walks, Horse Trials, Country Fair etc... on a regular basis. The estate is very beautiful, but Baslow doesn't have much to offer we have found. Couple of pubs, an Italian eatery, that's about it. We have found travelling and staying further out gets you closer to more interesting places. Could be just us, not overly tempted to use site.

some of this is due to not enough sites/pitches to go round and someone doesn't want to drive to say Cornwall with kids in the car only to find out the site is full ,then what sleep in a layby?

whereas overseas from the photos I have seen there seems to be no lack of sites or places to stay ,the whole culture is totally different

We the British seem to want to pre book everything from holidays to a meal at the local pub

Maybe its time for the Club to be a bit radicule and have one site where no booking is allowed, just turn up and stay

I must stop dreamingwink

Many thanks everyone for contributing to this discussion and for your feedback, which has been forwarded to the Sites Operations and Product Development teams for their reference.

Our flexible booking system allows members to amend their bookings if they need to change their holiday plans at short notice. We understand that some situations can't be predicted, and we do want members to be able to postpone their holidays by moving their dates forward. We're always sympathetic to members who breach the 72 hour late cancellation policy for genuine reasons. However, members who persistently late cancel their bookings may be suspended and have all their forward bookings cancelled.

We know that a small minority of members book more sites than they need, and choose to deprive other members of their holidays by amending bookings then cancelling them to avoid any late cancellation penalty. We can't stop them doing this, otherwise we would be making our booking system too inflexible for members who have valid reasons to change their travel plans. However, when we see frequent changes to bookings which appear to be designed to avoid the late cancellation policy, we take this very seriously and will always investigate and deal appropriately.
