I don't think it has been a good 6 months for the Caravan Club.

First of all we had the farce of COTY that was enough to put off anyone thinking of taking up caravanning. And not forgetting, of course, how to take a caravan up an impossible muddy bank so that you can remove the back end in the process.

Then there was the magazine change to the unreadable waste paper that it now is.

This was followed by the change to the website that is acknowledged as being pathetic and not fit for purpose - but with no apparent 'repairs' to it other than a very rapid change of club name.

Finally the debacle of the name change, logo change and enormous expense incurred for no benefit, a topic that has really got members back's up.

It's hard to imagine what the next fiasco will be but I guess there will be one.

I agree TTDA.  I have no problem with the principle of Caravanner of the Year, but I think some of the tasks should be tweaked somewhat - and let's not let Grenville take the back of his van out!!

Let's make it something that attracts people to vanning rather than make it a laughing stock.

It's good that some want to help shape the future, good on them. But I just want to arrange and plan something a little closer, like this years holiday plus a few years more and re-branding for the future holds no interest. If the service it offers now or next year is not to my liking I'll go elsewhere irrespective of the logo or 'the great outdoor' captions.

It needs more than tweaking in truth. Nowadays, touring isn't a competitive sport, if it ever was outside of rallies. If the Club is going to have a COTY, then let it reflect reality.

Better for it to reflect getting over the obstacles of acquiring and running a tourer outfit, dealing with unexpected malfunctions and mishaps when out and about, making the most of a family holiday on a budget, and something for children to give their insights. The Club is well placed to help with these aspects, so devise something that reflects this and slant it to try and grow the membership of families and young people.

And get some young people fronting it, presenting it and selling the Club. By all means have input from on high, experience does count, but it also needs the youth and innovation element as well.

What next?

How about reforming  MayDay and Red Pennant - so that those who want a breakdown policy only for UK can still have that, but those who want a single policy covering both UK and Europe can have that as an option. My car insurance asks if I want cover in one area or both, and my caravan insurance does too, but for breakdown and recovery the Club still insists on two quite separate policies.

Attracting younger families as I said in an earlier post, into what is to get started and then the running costs not a viable option with ever increasing pressure on their budgets    ,we have been amongst a very nice rally this w/end,and speaking to several of them ,apart from almost universal dismay at why there was any need for the very expensive  "rebrand"when the money should have been much better spent on keeping sites and adding more and the the "mission statements" on the 21st went to show how out of touch even the Chairman is with reality,

they said it was not often that they now saw young families on rallys   two of the rallyers stated their children ,had bought large tents as they only tended to go away in the peak season,so it was a far cheaper option and they had all the "home comforts" with more space, and one couple said their grandaughter who always came on rallies with them had bought a tent for her family and belonged to the ccc as there was far more sites available for them

I would make sure that those people who are tasked with finding out, not just what will be required but who you intend aiming it at (I still can't believe GC said he didn't know who they were but that we would be ready for them), would NOT be allowed to set foot on a CC site or CL this coming year but instead go out to a diversity of commercial sites and talk to the clientele on those sites to find out what attracted them to that site and what their perception of this club is?

That is, do market research at the sharp end.

It may well be that the existing members do NOT want to see the ethos change at all so for goodness sake ask them and don't ignore what they say, which unfortunately happens a lot.

In other words do your job, MR people and if this also entails other members of staff then get out there.

One of the reasons I quit "Mayday" and changed to  "Arrival" which also covers any size outfit but has the option to add annual European cover. The other was the price of RP for my size of vehicle.

Given the numbers currently signing up to the C&CC, they don't need a rebrand. Whatever they are currently doing seems to be working and the CMC have had to respond...

And helped no doubt by the cost of £37 to join the C&CC as against £49 to join this club ....
