York a 'Go Go'

We arrived late thanks to the A1 being closed and as a result there were only a couple of pitches left. In the corner of the site under tall trees where every pigeon seemed to find our skylights and roof. This lasted the whole of our holiday despite several thunder storms doing their best. We parked up as instructed and were amazed to get satellite television through a gap in the trees. This was short lived however as we had to move as our rear end was over the roadway . We now could not get TV as we lost signal were too far away to plug into TV point.  The first night was spend walking, though the back gate and finding small houses, shops and a pub. Next day exploring the city was brilliant from walking around the walls, visiting the Minster, strolling through the streets and afternoon tea. The initial siting situation was soon brightened by the day in the city. The site was very busy but the facilities were very clean.

1st Visit since site revamp

The York site was as good as ever, wardens are very helpful even found a great pub called the old ebor (through the back gate to the end of the road turn right and then left) the only comment I would like to make on the alterations is that I would have liked to see the old riverside part of the site included in the upgrade rather than be fenced off. however it still is a big improvement not having a large warehouse in the middle of the site and still spotlessly clean

Centre of York

The location of the site couldn't be better, located in a beautiful park with a 10 minute stroll along the river to the centre of York and one of the entrances to the ancient walls. We stayed in the new part of the site, which seemed to be a wee bit more spacious than the rest of the site despite there being little in the way of greenery between pitches. Our pitch was right next to the footpath to the park, which seemed to have raucous teens walking by until quite late, so I would suggest perhaps avoiding pitch no. 89 in the summer. As always with CC sites, it is totally immaculate from the grounds to the toilet block. For dog walkers, the park is great but further on and over the millennium bridge there is a 'wild' part where dogs can be let off the lead and have a good run. We stayed for four nights and there was certainly enough to see and do in York to keep us entertained. We booked a free walking tour which was brilliant and would definitely recommend as the guide highlighted points of interest that most of us would miss. All in all, I can definitely understand why this is such a popular site and well worth visiting.

Our best site yet

We have had our motorhome for just over a year (having upgraded from a tent!) and are still finding our way around. We have juts returned from a fabulous weekend in York and can definitely say that this is the best site we have stayed on to date. The shower block is spotless and has so many nice touches for convenience, like hand soap, hairdryers and lots of hooks to hang clothes, wash bag etc. The site looks so bright with flowers everywhere and the wardens are so friendly. Of course, the real reason to go is that is is so close to the city centre and we can recommend York Cold War Bunker for a visit with a difference. So, thanks to all at Rowntree Park. We have booked another weekend in December.

Thank you for a lovely week !

A big thank you for a lovely week made the more possible by all four wardens on the site. Ever friendly, courteous and helpful they made our holiday even the more enjoyable. I think others, including the Caravan Club have covered all the points I would mention bar one. That is why on earth did York Council build a childrens play area right beside the west side of the site? Whilst I am aware that historically the play area has always been there I would really like to know if the Club were consulted when a large Wendy house and zip wire were installed. Virtually all the pitches from pitch 7 to 22 are right beside the play area which also includes a zip wire ten metres behind pitches 15 to 22. The park is open in the summer until 9.30 pm so if you want peace and quiet I would try and give this area a miss as all that divides the site from the park is hedging which does not absorb the sound at all. I believe York Council like the Caravan Club Site and I am sure that the revenue it brings to the immediate area and York itself is much appreciated by them but do feel that with a little more thought the park amenities could have, and should have, been better placed. I'm also sure that because of the noise that the play area generates is the reason why many members move pitches on the site when ever they can. That being said we were lucky enough to be able to move to a quiet pitch and had a lovely time. Many thanks again to the wardens who made it possible.

Great Site

Stayed for 3 nights in June, arriving Friday afternoon. Was under the impression that no arrivals until after 1300hrs, (as per website and all literature) so planned journey accordingly. Was stunned to find that new arrivals were arriving anytime from 1030hrs onwards on each morning there. Had we known, we would have arrived earlier to take advantage of the horse racing. This was the only disappointment of our stay. The site is well kept and facilities immaculate. Wardens were friendly and site is ideal for walking into the centre of York. Would like to return again.

Comment from the club:-

Many thanks for leaving a review and we were pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to York Rowntree Park.  With regards to the arrival times we want to clear up any confusion.  The website and the handbook advise arrivals after 12.00 because of the narrow approach road.  The wardens have advised me that existing customers on site sometimes wish to move pitches and they may do this during the morning before noon and this could be why you thought new arrivals were setting up.  I hope this helps to explain the procedure and thank you again for leaving a review

What a fabulous site now??

I am staying on here now on the new pitches after not being here for 12 months..partly due to the lack of awning pitches.  There are two reasons for my review.. Firstly..I would like to praise the wardens, Carl and Janet for the amazing transformation of the site. Not just the re development which gives grassed areas to sit on by your van but the general  'cared for' look of the site.  Everything freshly painted, hedges trimmed to enable visibility both for safety and pleasure. There Are even fresh herbs growing in planters by reception that people are invited to pick and use for free.planters if flowers everywhere. Easier access for the RV emptying point. It is such a busy site but they have excelled themselves in the presentation here. They remembered me when I checked in because a year ago to the date, my dog was run over by a cyclist on the river path...they were so helpful then even though it was noon and peak check in time.  and it was delightful to be recognised when I arrived this week as I tow my van alone. Carl even unhitched and pitched it for me. The second reason for my writing is to plead with people to Not book an awning pitch if you have no intention of erecting an awning.  Many people Want to have an awning and cannot get a pitch where they are able to do so.  This week, many, many awning pitches have never seen sight of an awning, despite various units occupying them yet I have met people who desperately wanted to have one and couldn't book one.  Maybe it is partly because the awning pitch availability is displayed above the non awning ones on the club web site?? Carl and Janet have changed the way they check people in so you get fast tracked on busy days then go back to pay as you collect your keys which has SO improved the bottleneck at noon.  Well done guys...it's a fab site.

Great Weekend with a Bonus

We booked the May Day bank holiday weekend before we knew that the Tour de Yorkshire would take place that weekend so we had the added bonus of spectating the cycle race. This meant a quiet site on Saturday as the road closures meant that nobody could arrive or leave the site. Something to watch out for in approaching was that our Camper 760 GPS wanted us to go under the bridge into the top of Terry Avenue - 8ft 8in caravan under an 8ft 6in bridge - no way!! The pedestrian gate out the back of the site to Bishopthorpe Rd is great for access to local restaurants, takeaways and a variety of other shops and that was also on the route of the cycle race on Saturday. Just a short walk up Terry Avenue and across the bridge into the center of York with all its historical interest, shops and restaurants. Good spacious pitches with plenty of room for caravan, awning and car with beech hedges to outline the pitch. We are now planning a longer stay in 2016.

York Rowntree - Great Stay

We stayed for 4 nights 11-15 May and found all sight wardens friendly and helpful, the recent site development providing additional awning pitches is a great asset. The location for access to central York and river area is excellent. Access via key to a gate (rear of site) leading to the local shops is really useful. Also enjoyed the 'Dante Races' this week, this very popular site is always very busy and the wardens are constantly on the go hence the standard of care throughout the site is outstanding, thank you to all.

Super location for visiting York

This was the First time we had visited the site in early May. Absolutely brilliant. Handy for York as you are able to walk right into the centre along the river. Good walks along both sides of the river and very handy shops through the back gate for papers and any last minute items. The site was more than we expected and will try to stay longer than 3 days next time, that's all we could get when we booked back in February, its a very popular site. The wardens were very helpful, they helped us put our caravan onto the pitch. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean as always on club sites. Will definitely visit again.
