First Time At Yellowcraig

We made our week-long visit to Yellowcraig as part of a September tour up through the north east and into Scotland. The site is a mile from Dirlton village down an access road which ends at the beach car park and what a beach! A beautiful bay right next to the site which is also dog friendly. On arrival we received a very warm and enthusiastic welcome from the warden who explained the site facilities. This site is split up into several small grouped areas around a larger central grass area and we had a nice spacious hardstanding pitch on one of the outer areas. The toilet/shower block is central and very well maintained with plenty of facilities available. The area has lots of interesting places to visit with North Berwick a few minutes drive down the coast or a pleasant walk along the beach if you prefer. Haddington is well worth visiting and Edinburgh is just a short drive or bus journey away. The Bridge To Nowhere at nearby Bellhaven Bay is an intriguing oddity but I will leave it for the visitor and find out why. If you wish to experience some magic here try an evening walk on the beach as the sun sets. The colours in the big sky are fantastic and the sound of the sea is so soothing. As we walked back to the site squadrons of geese flew overhead honking away to each other as they returned to their roost and the constellations began sparkling in the darkening sky above them. Well worth turning out for, even on a chilly September evening. Those who feel the need to be connected may be disappointed though, you are pretty much off grid here. There is practically no mobile signal with just the odd sniff to occasionally send or receive texts. We use Vodafone (other network operators are also not available). Although WiFi is listed in the "Facilities On Site" there is no rating given and our part of the site (pitch 76) like many other areas had no coverage at all. The warden explained that this was due to the low broadband speed which is insufficient to provide a site distribution system, hence why I couldn't spot any repeater masts. However there is a limited cover around the reception area (hot spot) which I was able to use to make a booking at another club site to break our trip home. If you choose a pitch in this area you may be able to access the signal, if not go to the info room and try from there. This is just my observation, not a criticism. But forget the internet and social media, the only tweets you will encounter at Yellowcraig are from the birds. Come here and relax on the lovely beach, you may even be able to forget about Brexit! A site definitely on our revisit list

First Visit

My first visit to this site, stayed for 2 nights. Was on pitch 9 with my Motorhome and 2 dogs. Next to a lovely, friendly elderly couple in their caravan who told me all about the various walks available. Although a big site, it was very quiet and everyone was very friendly. No great views from the site, but 5 minutes walk and you are at a fantastic beach and plenty space to exercise your dogs or easy walking distance in to North Berwick etc. Yes there were lots of dogs on site but to be honest you would not know, there was no excessive barking and the cleanliness of the site it was immaculate. Felt very safe on the site, even leaving the dogs outside the Motorhome while going to the facilities or washing dishes. Thank you to all for an enjoyable stay. Will certainly be back.

Back again!

This was our 3rd visit here. We come back because of the location itโ€™s outstanding! Our trip was in the summer so the site was very full. Finding a suitable pitch can be difficult. Some are considerably smaller than others and there are several sideways pitches which are offered as awning pitches but really arenโ€™t. Some pitches are huge on the other hand. It feels like it needs reorganised?!? Our pitch was decent although backed on to a tree we discovered children used to play in. Gets a bit tiresome when theyโ€™re standing under your canopy shouting for friends for most of the day. This wasnโ€™t the den area previously mentioned either. Saying that we had a wonderful time the site is beautiful and is two minutes away from stunning scenery and a beautiful beach where you can walk for miles. The wardens are very pleasant. We walked upโ€™The Lawโ€™ the local hill, went on a rib at the Scottish Seabird Centre and were lucky enough to see dolphins. North Berwick is a lovely little town as is Dirleton where we allied to from the site and visited the castle and the newly opened cafe for an ice cream and coffee. Our dog was in heaven with the dog walk also. Best by far we have been to. Plenty of bins as well! Local shopping and a couple of close supermarkets. We shall definitely return and hope that the Russian roulette of pitch availability will be on our side. If it wasnโ€™t for this gamble this site would definitely be a 5 star all the way for us as we love it.

One of the best sites

We arrived very early before the reception opened, sat at the waiting point until the staff returned from toilet cleaning duties. The reception door blind went up with a very cheery lady beckoning me to come and book in earlier than opening time, this was much appreciated as after a long journey you like to be pitched as ASAP. She told me she opened earlier as we were forming a queue. Throughout the booking in I was made to feel very welcome and treated like a long lost friend, this friendliness was evident during our stay and never were we passed by without a greeting wherever we were on the site. Other visitors were treated the same as us. As a single dog owner we found the onsite dog walk the best weโ€™ve seen as well as a fantastic beach miles of sand to walk on just outside the site. Great staff a credit to this site. Great location. I must avoid the time when 734 dogs are on site๐Ÿ˜‚

Overrun with dogs!

There are 112 pitches on this site and - max outfit length is 9.2 metres but apparently no restriction on the number of dogs per outfit - the wardens never ask. A recent member we spoke to counted 7 dogs with one outfit- that's a lot of dog pee etc! We are no longer dog owners but think the club should limit the number of dogs like some overseas sites. Of as much concern is that the club does apparently not keep records of dogs brought on site, nor does it check if a dog is on the dangerous list... 112 pitches x 7 dogs per pitch = 784 dogs - now that surely is not acceptable?

Nice Location

We don't normally have many complaints about CC sites wardens, sadly the start of our 3 night stay challenged this. Having pre booked a non awning pitch, we were on arrival given pitch 11, a sideways-on non awning pitch, because, we were told, they were fully booked and no other pitches were available. This pitch might be OK for an overnighter but beyond that NO !! Small, irregular, staring straight into the camper in front of us, a matter of feet from the roadway โ€ฆ. goldfish bowl comes to mind absolutely nil privacy. My wife went back to reception to find out why we couldn't use some other empty pitches but she was told they weren't available, my wife even suggested we take an awning pitch and pay extra but she was told none were available. Actually the cost is the same I've now realised. We tried to find some benefits of the pitch but eventually we chose to pack up and leave and I went to inform the same female warden who dealt with us initially. Immediately she gave me the choice of 2 pitches (99 and 107) that were non awning pitches. I enquired why she hadn't offered us these when we spoke earlier and she replied she would have to "jiggle things around". We viewed both and accepted 99. During our stay 11 and 107 remained empty as did others. My question is why was the first few hours of our stay so frustratingly wasted ????? Moving on, the wardens were otherwise pleasant and the site typical CC so no complaints. Yellowcraig is a 5 minute stroll from a beautiful beach, where you can walk for miles. North Berwick is lovely, Edinburgh or Berwick on Tweed aren't far away, and there's plenty to do within a short walk or journey. The Castle Arms in Dirleton is very friendly and serves great food, the castle itself is worth a visit. Locally there is a large Tesco in North Berwick.

Great location

On arrival the wardens were very friendly and welcoming. The site is very clean and the toilet and showers also very clean. The location is superb, only a 5 minute walk to the lovely beach and plenty dog walks including one on site. A 5 minute drive into North Berwick. The only gripes were the lack of mobile phone signal and the hit or miss CAMC WiFi connection

Fantastic site

Lovely site, friendly chatty wardens make you very welcome there is an excellent dog walk on site (one of the best we have seen). There is a fabulous beach 5 minute walk away perfect for children and dogs. Ideally located to visit North Berwick a lovely Town with a good selection of shops and supermarkets where you can also go to Scottish Seabird Centre and have a trip out on one of the boat trips. We did the one on the catamaran yesterday that went to Bass Rock would definitely recommend or if you feeling braver than us you could do one of the trips out on one of the ribs ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š There is a lovely Ice Cream Shop called Alandas their ice cream is to die for. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy and somewhere for a coffee or a meal out Fort Kinnaird Retail Park is about half an hours drive away. It is also within easy reach of the National Museum of Flight
