Great site and wardens

Great site and wardens, always a favorite of ours. Abbey loves running in the woods... Great area to relax, explore and be close to the Desert Rats training ground, which my Granddad was in from 1939........

Great for a short break

We stayed here one night at the end of our tour of Norfolk, we had had a busy but enjoyable week and when we saw the weather forecast decided to stay an extra night so booked here. Lovely friendly welcome and we had a fab grass pitch surrounded by trees. We stayed on site and did a short circular walk then lazed around. The ground is quite sandy so if you are concerned about getting your outfit grubby I would suggest a hardstanding pitch (we were not worried). It is a bit in the middle of nowhere and off of a main road so would need to drive to get places. There was the consistent banging from the nearby farm (see previous reviews) which for us was no concern, however I think if you stayed here longer and "tuned" in to it then it might become irritating.

Great site, peaceful, wonderful location for walking and enjoying nature!

Stayed here for 2 nights last weekend. Nice friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere in terms of pitch selection. Good size pitches. Wonderful location with great access to the surrounding forest. Great for people who like walking, cycling, have kids and/or dogs! Would love to see shower and toilet facilities here, otherwise the site is great! We will be back for sure!

Relaxing long weekend

Stayed 2 nights over weekend 09/10. Quiet site in the forest, with direct walks from site for the dog. As others have said, the site is not signposted of the road, but you can't miss it due to the big tank! (unless you are me!!). There is a dog agility course at Lynford Arboretum which our labrador loved! We also visited High Lodge which our 3 year old daughter enjoyed doing the Gruffalo trail and playing the musical instruments in the forest! The site was clean and wardens friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit the site again in the future.

Quiet and friendly

We recently enjoyed a three night stay. The site was well laid out, and well maintained. Our pitch (hardstanding) was level, and close to a service point. Other guests were friendly and sociable, and the wardens friendly and welcoming. Covid restrictions were sensible, and appeared to be well adhered to. Military enthusiasts will be well catered for in the area. Unfortunately, our fridge decided to pack up, but it wasn’t hot enough for food to spoil. There is a large retail park, only a 20 minute drive away. Mundford, a 5 minute drive away has a nice fish & chip shop..

No Gas!!

Just had 3 really lovely nights at Thetford club site. Staff were very welcoming and the site is right next to the 7 Armoured division museum which was sadly closed due to Covid 19. Still plenty of dog walking so a great site for taking the dogs and letting them loose in the forest with plenty of signed walks. (Lots of squirrels for them to chase) Sadly there was no gas available for sale on the site. The wardens explained this was a club decision. Also they weren't able to tell us where we might be able to get some. However, if you are desperate the Calor centre in Bury St Edmunds IP28 6QY has plenty and is open albeit a bit expensive. There is no club sign off the road from Mundford (Not even a brown caravan sign) but the great big Tank sitting at the entrace is a big clue. If you have never been before turn into the museum entrance and follow the concrete road until you see the caravan club site on the right. It would help if they put a sign up!. No toilet block but plenty of service points around the site.

Bird Scarer

We have just stayed 11 nights on this site. The site is in the middle of woods with lots of walks from the site, which we had hoped to take advantage of, but unfortunately the farm at the back of the site had a very loud bird scarer, which went off 3 times every 15 minutes from approx 7.30 am until 10.00pm every day. We have a very sensitive Border Collie, who is terrified of loud noises, even in the caravan with the tv or radio on, the bangs could still be heard. He spent a lot of time "hiding in the shower room of our caravan". During the day we had to travel some distance from the site for him to enjoy our walks. This is a lovely site for walking, but if you are like us with a nervous dog we cannot recommend it.

Splendid (mostly quiet) woodland setting

A Great little site. No toilet block, but this actually makes it more attractive in these COVID stricken times, as guests aren’t tempted to “bend” any occupancy rules in the facilities, which we have seen on other sites. The site is within Forestry Commission land, so plenty of walks for those with dogs and lots of wildlife to be seen. There’s also a lot of history here as the area was used by the 7th Armoured Division of the famous Desert Rats, just before D-Day. There are extensive walks with information boards and it’s not hard to imagine the hustle and bustle of an Army Tank base just before D-Day 1944 Noise? It may be an issue, and has been noted by others who have stayed here. The principle “culprits” are the USAF fast jets based at RAF Lakenheath just down the road, and combat rescue helicopters from RAF Mildenhall who use the nearby land for training... sometimes at night, but not past about 11pm. The other noise maker could be the nearby extensive Army training ranges, even though they are quite a way away. Our stay coincided with a “Battle Camp”, so small arms and rifle fire, and louder artillery could be heard, again they finished before 11pm. BUT... you would have to be very, very unlucky to experience both, and for extensive periods. Usually there’s more (muted) noise from the nearby main road. Overall a great site in a smashing location. Worth a visit.

Woodland Walks

This site is surrounded by woodland, perfect for long walks direct from site. Just stayed for 10 nights, weather was lovely. The site is very peaceful other than when air force planes fly over (not too often). The TV signal reception on my pitch was not very good, but will say other people said they had a good TV signal. I would recommend this site for people looking for a short break or a quiet family holiday.

Peace and quiet 45 mins from home. 'And breath'

This is our 'local' site, but it might as well be in a completely different part of the Country. Mid September, the site was pretty much full, but a sense of calm wafted over the place with nobody in a rush to go anywhere or do anything. So peaceful, so relaxing, so nice. The site wardens are both friendly but unobtrusive. Helpful and available but 'not in your face'. Perfect!

The site is clean, well kept without being manicured to within an inch of its life, letting wildlife get on with 'doing it's thing' quietly in the background. Brambles are left to grow without interfering with the spacious pitches so butterflies and squirrels do not shy away. Deer can be seen regularly on site in the early hours and the many and varied walks directly from the site can keep you busy for hours.

So the local American air bases were undertaking manoeuvres during our stay, but they were infrequent, with the V22-Osprey plane/helicopter hybrids skimming the trees for an our or so on a couple of nights, but not late into the night so as to disturb sleep unless you were very early to bed. I like to think of those people training to help protect us should things ever 'hit the fan' and they are also entertaining to watch. If you like that sort of thing, there are viewing areas at both Lakenheath and Mildenhall, a short drive away, where you can get up close and experience the power of fighter jets at take off. There are always lots of people there taking photo's when exercises are taking place but I don't know how they know when these are?

Swaffham is a short drive away with a decent Tesco and good Waitrose store along with a selection of local shops in the town centre. Brandon is likewise a short drive away in the opposite direction and, although not very pretty, it does have an Aldi and smaller Tesco plus a train station if you fancy a trip further afield.

Mundford Arboretum is just down the road on route to Brandon. Park up (free), cross back over the access road (very quiet) into the arboretum and enjoy short or long walks around the site with access out into the countryside if you want to go a bit further afield. A simple but entertaining dog agility area is also available and dogs can be off lead for much of the time, especially mid-week when it is much quieter. You can also walk the other way from the car park down to the lake and all around, but this does get busy at weekends.

So, pretty much our favourite site. Its a shame it closes during the winter as I am sure those of us who do not need shower blocks etc. would keep it busy, especially during these strange times. Oh, and social distancing was SO easy to maintain, including when booking in. The site is so spacious there really is no need to get up close to your neighbours for whatever reason, even at the bins and water areas. Nice!
