Beautifully Kept Site

This is a really well kept and maintained site with excellent facilities. It has a really good information room which has a table and chairs, where a jigsaw puzzle was set up and in progress. It was also very well stocked with leaflets about the local area. There is a fabulous view of the Derwent Valley, you could almost call it a viewing platform as it is between the upper and lower pitches and there are a couple of picnic benches there for you to sit and take in the scenery. We booked a fully serviced pitch for our weekend away, and it is what we got, however, it was very narrow and you had to pitch your tow vehicle in front of your caravan tight up to a bank of soil and retained wall. This meant you could not put an awning up, otherwise you would of been hammering your pegs into the actual road. It's a bit naughty really as it was supposed to be suitable for an awning. There was nothing to be done as we arrived late at 7pm due to an accident on the roads, and it was the only pitch left on the site. As we were only there for two nights and we wanted to explore the area the next day we did not try and move. In our opinion, pitch 49 is only really suitable for a motorhome. Or alternatively the club should make it into a seated area. The wardens on the site are lovely and it was clear they were very hardworking people who had pride in their job, there really was no point in complaining as there was no other pitch available.

Beautiful & Relaxing

Just got home from a 7 night stay on this site. We had no problem finding the site ( using the clubs directions due to bad roads ). Beautiful clean, quiet , relaxing site with spectacular views over the valley behind our pitch. I must stress that this site would be no good if you have children as there is nothing for them to do on site - no playground. I would certainly say this site should be classed as an Adults Only site due to there being nothing for children to do. The site is very well kept, toilets, showers etc very clean & always available. The only down side is that the dog walk needs some lighting, there are a few lights on the entrance to it but nothing once on the field & with the dark nights unless you have a torch it is very dark. Lots of places to visit around the site, lovely pubs serving delicious food although a lot do not open until 4pm. Visited Bakewell Market on Monday which was nice. Will definitely be visiting this site again.

terrible approach roads

We visited this site on 7th September for an overnight stop,The site is lovely and is very quiet my gripe is with the caravan clubs route planner this is the second time i have had issues with it,it is not fit for purpose if you follow the directions it takes you from new road onto Crich lane caravans should not be directed up this road as it is narrow in places and if you meet anything large coming the other way you cannot pass we were lucky others may not be.We also tried other roads once we had unhitched and the only feasible route is from the town centre and that is a nightmare with vehicles parked at the side of the roads, so i would advise anyone planning a visit not to follow the clubs route planner but devise their own or ring the warden in advance as he gave us good directions when we left.

Great Site

Chose to visit this site for the August Bank holiday break. The wardens welcome was one of the best we have experienced. A friendly smile and welcome always makes the difference, We were allocated pitch 22, a larger area near the amenities block, as we have a large twin axle unit,( the wardens have obviously read the booking details and even displayed the pitch as allocated/ occupied for our arrival, a nice little touch) The site has lovely views, spotless club class toilet/showers, and again the wardens advice and recommendations on local walks and places to visit/ eat were spot on! Thankyou

Beautiful site

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay at The Firs on our 3 week summer vacation. The wardens were friendly and thoughtful and rang us the day before our arrival to advise of a nearby road closure and give us an alternative suitable route. The site itself is spotless as were the facilities. Not all pitches have the amazing view however it never ceased to take my breath away,on my way to have a shower, when I passed the view point. There are plenty of things to do in the local area to suit all tastes. My only bug bear on this site were the children, some just toddlers, using the sloping road as a free wheel for their bikes and scooters, often abusing the one way system. Not only was this incredibly annoying it was also an accident waiting to happen. I do not blaim the wardens who cannot police the whole site at all times, but parents who leave youngsters to their own devices unattended.

This Firs is a very good site.

The Firs is an excellent site which is kept in tip top condition by the wardens who are friendly and have a good sense of humour. It's location is outstanding overlooking the valley. We will definitely return for another visit.

Quiet and pleasant site

We stayed on this site for three nights on our way home from The Lake District and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The joining instructions may seem a little long winded in the handbook, but they are absolutely necessary due to the extremely sharp turn into the approach road. The wardens were very friendly and kept the whole site looking immaculate. There are only a few pitches with the stunning views over the valley, but the rest of the site seemed well laid out and peaceful. The wardens had been struggling for sufficient water supply for some time due to a water mains bursting in the road, but seemed to be keeping cheerful. There were plenty of attractions to visit locally and we would not hesitate to visit this site again. Thanks to the wardens for all their hard work.

Just delightful....

....and made especially so by the wardens, Angie and Les, a charming couple who could not be more welcoming and helpful. It's very clear that they take pride in the site and it's overall condition and presentation is to their personal credit. Thanks for a very pleasant five day stay. The town of Belper, just a couple of miles away, has some lovely shops and plenty of places to have something to eat. Within easy driving distance are the well known Peak District towns of Matlock and Bakewell, but a little gem close by is Wirksworth. Well worth a look.

Meeting friends

We chose this site to meet up with friends who live locally and hoped to walk with them. We had read a review in the Club July magazine that said there were walks directly from the site which would have been perfect for our needs. However, the only way out on foot is along a surprisingly busy road where traffic doesn't keep to the 40mph limit (not the fault of the Club, obviously). We did venture out with the dogs, but it wasn't a pleasure. This site is fine for folk with a car, but for motorhomers who don't want to have to pack the van to go off site, not such a good choice. The directions given in the site directory are aimed at caravans, and on leaving, we had no trouble taking the motorhome by another route which was considerably shorter. There are views from a limited number of pitches, but otherwise not. The wardens were lovely and the facilities were immaculate at all times, not just immediately after cleaning. As it was a weekend, and the site was busy, this was particularly good. We enjoyed our stay, but wouldn't necessarily chose this site again for the reasons given.
